ST MORITZ, Switzerland, Feb 9 (Reuters) - Canadian Melanie Turgeon claimed gold in a dramatic women's downhill at the Alpine skiing world championships on Sunday.

Turgeon stunned a huge crowd on the Engiadina course with a time of one minute 34.30 seconds to become the first Canadian woman to win world downhill gold for 10 years.

In a thrilling race, Switzerland's Corinne Rey Bellet had looked like claiming her country's first gold of the championships when she took the lead with 1:34.41.

But she had to be content with a joint silver medal with Austria's Alexandra Meissnitzer who almost stole the show.

And we won the combined (and there isn't a proper ski resort in croatia at all)! Unfortunately, it looks as if she won't be taking further part in the World Championship. But we still have her brother to watch out for.
