Well, I apologise those ones who have voted yet. After 5 posts (including mine), this is the top five: 1- New Order (50 pts), 2- Joy Division (25), 3- The Smiths (16), 4- The Clash (14) and 5- Stone Roses (13). I have voted for: 1- NO, 2- JD, 3- Fatboy Slim, 4- A Certain Ratio, 5- Happy Mondays, 6- Ramones, 7- Chemical Brothers, 8- Siouxsie, 9- Stone Roses and 10- Altern 8. Also have been voted: The Cure, Talking Heads, EATB, The Delgados, Massive Attack, Mercury Rev, Lloyd Cole and other 16 bands/artists.

Would you like to vote? Please, follow these conditions:

  • place NO, JD and side projects each one in separated.
  • please, fill each place in of ten bands/solo artists, despiting the "gap size" your consider between them.
  • you may indicate one band's phase you like the most, but give this band just one place.
  • all these conditions are about to make total goes easier, 'cos the 1st place shall receive 10 pts, 2nd get 9, until 10th get 1.

Thank you all I hope it doesn't get deleted again!

As promised, here goes the current rank, until this post. I shall wait for more posts to make deep analysis, but is remarkable Depeche Mode's pulling up.

1- New Order (155 pts), 2- Joy Division (111), 3- The Smiths (36), 4- Depeche Mode (33), 5- The Cure (32), 6- The Clash and The Stone Roses (27), 8- Electronic (26), 9- Echo And The Bunnymen (21), 10- U2 (19), 11- Happy Mondays (17), 12- Kraftwerk (15), 13- Velvet Underground (14), 14- The Fall (11), 15- The Beatles and Pet Shop Boys (10).

Others 79 bands/artists have been mentioned. Keep on voting, men (and women, sure), even we all know this contest is like the Formula 1: its real fight is about 3rd and 4th places. Soon I'll give you more informations and analysis.

Thank you all

Well, well.

The 3rd place fight keeps busting on! Currently, this is the ranking:

1- New Order (209 pts) - only band mentioned by everybody 2- Joy Division (152) 3- The Smiths . The Clash (39 both) - raised to menace 5- The Cure . Pet Shop Boys (35 both) - last great jumping! 7- Depeche Mode (34) - slowing down 8- Electronic (33) 9- The Stone Roses - is it stopped? . Echo & The Bunnymen (27 both) 11- Velvet Underground (26) - here comes the EPI! 12- The Fall (24) 13- The Beatles (21) 14- Kraftwerk (20) - such a tour de force! 15- U2 (19) - other great stopping 16- Happy Mondays . Radiohead (17 both) - shall it surprise? 18- Sex Pistols (14) 19- Pink Floyd . David Bowie (13 both) - both slowly as dinossaurs

I should have been voted myself to Bauhaus, but now it's gone... it's a fantastic band, as much as Sisters Of Mercy in their early age. By the way, where are their fans? Them both has no mention at all. Keep on voting, this play is getting funnier time over time. :D

Thank you all

What, massive attack not in the top 20? Nor Nirvana?

The only Bahaus song I can remember is Bela Lugusi's Dead. That was a good 'un, but everything else...can't remember a thing.

Sorry, Massive Attack has currently 7 points, as well as Triumph, Tears For Fears, St. Etiènne, Sétima Legião, Ramones, The Delgados, Cocteau Twins, The Doors (!), A Certain Ratio (!!) and Charles Mingus (!!!). All of them share the 42th place of 114 bands/artists mentioned. And Nirvana was remembered by none. After your post: 1- New Order (219), 2- Joy Division (161), 3- Cure (43), 4- Clash and Smiths (39), 6- Pet Shop Boys (35), 7- Depeche Mode (34), 8- Electronic (33), 9- Echo & Bunnymen and Stone Roses (27), 11- Velvet Underground and Kraftwerk (26), 13- Fall (24), 14- Beatles (21), 15- U2 (19).

Bauhaus has a lot of good songs, as "Double Dare", "Passion Of Lovers", "Hair Of The Dog" and "Swing The Heartache", but no one's more famous than "Bela Lugosi Is Dead" and "Ziggy Stardust", which ones are still fully "audible" on a commercial radio. Search for their 1979-1983 double compilation and there you can find out all Bauhaus' best songs. ;)

At this moment, all these bands/artists have achieved 20 points or more:

1- New Order (266), 2- Joy Division (206), 3- Cure (55), 4- Smiths (50), 5- Clash (45), 6- Echo & Bunnymen (42), 7- Electronic (39), 8- Depeche Mode (36), 9- Pet Shop Boys (35), 10- Stone Roses (34), 11- Jesus & Mary Chain (30), 12- Velvet Underground (28), 13- Kraftwerk (26), 14- Fall (24), 15- Beatles (21), 16- Happy Mondays (20).

I wish to note 2 great jumpings: Echo & Bunnymen (from 9th to 6th, going to threaten Clash's position) and Jesus And Mary Chain (15 points received since last ranking and raising upon 7 positions). Such a sensational bands, both of them deserve to be at the top, as well as Bauhaus, but it has any a miserable point. By the way, it makes me want to listen again to Bauhaus' "Mask", to Echo's "Porcupine" and to J&MC's "Psychocandy". Wonderful songs, tearing guitars, loveable moods and classical recordings. Excuse me, now I gotta do this! Thank you all

Sorry, I haven't. I heard (or read) good reviews about it, and, so, I will search for this. From Love & Rockets I got their "Sweet FA", too much acoustic for my taste. But it's okay, anyway. I prefer rather Peter Murphy solo, or better Bauhaus, obviously. Any former member in solo recording couldn't repeat the strenght of a "Kick In The Eye" or the swinging balance of an "In Fear Of Fear". That guys (together) rule (or ruled)...

No but Arno Hintjens still lives as far as I know (website www.arno.be; all with macromedia flash and oriented towrads the french speaking community as far as I remember). He has been knighted so that makes it a kind of interesting; how many musicians have been anyway? Plus how many singers are there that manage to come up with songs that have lyrics in 3 different languages. Arno could really make you dance if you experienced one of his concerts as I did in '82. There was also a Dutch band "The Div" playing in the same style, in Dutch. You ever heard of them?. Also great music.

And how come nobody likes Nirvana?

Yes, I am! Give me just a few minutes to post current rank, ok?

I apologise for my delay...

Here goes the list:

1- New Order (314), 2- Joy Division (248), 3- Smiths (68), 4- Cure (64), 5- Clash (51), 6- Depeche Mode (50), 7- Stone Roses (46), 8- Pet Shop Boys (45), 9- Electronic (44), 10- Echo & Bunnymen (42), 11- Kraftwerk (35), 12- Jesus & Mary Chain and U2 (30), 14- Velvet Underground (28), 15- The Fall (24).

Notes: big fight between Smiths and The Clash (2nd and 3rd places). DM's great increasing of points. Stone Roses' great jumping (from 10th to 7th). Echo's sad fall (from 6th to 10th).

So, I think Nirvana was fully forgotten or it is in everybody's 10th to 20th best bands list (as in my case).

Thank you all

Don't know what the list is supposed to be really, because if I write what I think might be "the greatest bands" then my list wouldn't be my own list of favorite bands, and vice versa. And "the greatest bands" would be silly, IMHO.

So mine, best as I can tell as of now:

Tied for first: Joy Division/New Order (don't make me separate them) & Neil Young

After that: REM Sonic Youth Throwing Muses/Kristin Hersh The Smiths Cat Power

and it descends into a free for all with Smog Husker Du & offshoots Birthday Party/Nick Cave Modest Mouse Silkworm/Joel Phelps etc etc etc. and I don't know whether to count by how many records I have (the Smog, Nick Cave, Husker Du etc sections are huge) or how often I get the one really great record out (Gang of Four's Entertainment!)

And a note about Bauhaus: in high school I would have included them in a top ten for sure. Great singles band, patchy albums, great reunion tour. It's true, the 79-83 compilation is almost all you need but Mask is great too. A very funny band.

Great singles band, patchy albums, great reunion tour. It's true, the 79-83 compilation is almost all you need but Mask is great too. A very funny band.

Ei, Alyssa What a mess! :D Let's make it clear: when I purposed this subject, I meant you can build your list anyhow, as long we all consider many factors to create our top ten: how many times we want to listen to, how many records we got of them, how much interested we are about them, and added to this, there is the factor "how STILL we are". So, we can never stand a permanent list of our top ten; in my case, I guess each list survives unchangeable for each 6-7 months. After this, surely two or three names will raise up or fall down. By the way, can you please (re) organise your list, just for the table :bestof: Thank you

About Bauhaus, I never seen them live, they'd never been here in Brazil, unfortunately. You're right when you say their best album is "Mask". What a great reunion of songs: "Hollow Hills", "Hair Of The Dog" and "In Fear Of Fear" (this one I prefer the BBC version). Bauhaus were really fantastic. I hope they don't come back no more!

Sorry guys, here's another list that's probably going to get lambasted:

1 Radiohead 2 Magazine/Anything involving Howard Devoto 3 New Order/Joy Division 4 Elvis Costello 5 Bjork 6 Cyndi Lauper (Esp. 80s albums, but really all her stuff) 7 The Smiths 8 Kraftwerk 9 Sigur Ros 10 Beatles (As an afterthought? No, it can't be...)

This was too hard. I would have added so many more 80s/new wave bands like XTC and Depeche Mode but NO is really the best of the bunch.

Why would one wish to lambast such a fine list?

Though for some reason I've always been irritated by Elvis Costello, but can't quite explain why. He just seems to have an over-inflated reputation amongst the US college crowd. He's OK, but not _that_ good.

What Sigur Ros stuff do you reckon is good? I only have the () album.

Thanks!

I just meant that some might be critical of the lack of NO being at number 1. I noticed a whole conversation about that earlier in the thread. I guess NO is close enough to the top, though!

I think the first Sigur Ros CD, Agaetis Byrjun, is the better of the two. The whole album is undescribably good. It has to be heard to be believed!

If you like (), you'll love AB. I think the first half of () is excellent, but it starts to run out of steam after the 35 second pause separating the halves.

BTW, have you heard Imperial Bedroom by Elvis Costello? Considered classic by many! :P

I'll probably get that Sigur album, I do like (), though I think you are right that the first part is better.

Not putting NO at number 1 is only unacceptable if one puts Depeche Mode ahead of them. Putting the workmanlike, spiritually shallow pop DM ahead of the masters is...words fail me....

I never try to sort my favorite bands which I think would be like wanting to know who is my best friend then who is second etc. It's a bit strange and there are so many ways to make such a list ! Anyway let's try, just for the fun to talk about bands such as "trisomie 21"... (which I don't know if it's one of my ten favorite bands but at the moment I want to buy their records)

01 - New order 02 - Joy division 03 - Joe satriani 04 - Jimmy eat world 05 - Depeche mode 06 - Lenny kravitz 07 - Cocteau twins 08 - Art of noise 09 - Korn 10 - Trisomie 21

It's funny, if you go the first page of the forum, you'll see all these posts from 2002 - and it is funny to read what people thought about the future, what they hoped for, what they were afraid of back then. And here we are. :spit:

Far, far too many to squeeze into a top 10.

1. Joy Division 2. New Order 3. The Triffids 4. The Fall 5. Cabaret Voltaire 6. The Clash 7. The Mekons 8. Gram Parsons 9. The Church 10. R.E.M.

That's what I wrote back then. Top five have not changed at all, Mekons would now be 6, followed by The Chemical Bros., R.E.M. (still, despite the recent lackluster past), The Velvets and Talking Heads.
