Durutti Column, can anyone suggest where to start with durutti column? i have listened to a couple tracks, while the newest stuff sounds like wank, there is other stuff i really dig, 'smile in the crowd.'etc. thanks!

I really like the track "Otis" on the 24HPP soundtrack, been meaning to get something by them myself (of course, they're so popular down here the record stores can't keep anything in stock, and they pretend not to know who I'm talking about when I go asking around :D )

The obvious place to start is the first album "Return of". This album is an absolute classic and sounds beautiful on CD. The reissue on Factory Too includes some fascinating bonus tracks including some Martin Hannett electronic experiments given away free as a flexi disc with the original LP.

Of the mid-period Durutti I am a big fan of "The Guitar and other machines" - the track "English Landscape Tradition" is particular favourite of mine. Also you can't go wrong with the "Sporadic Recordings" CD which summarizes this period.

I disagree about the later material - some of it is excellent. Both "Sex and Death" and "Time was gigantic" are brilliant albums - also Vini has released a new album this week - I have it on order - hopefully receive it at the weekend.

As Tony Wilson said in 24HR PP Durutti are definately due a revival - great music to chill out to - indeed !

I totally agree this is a very mellow laid back album with some stand out tracks such as The Missing Boy and Sketch for Dawn :clap:

My favorite album is "The Return Of Durutti Column", as Adam said it's an absolute classic and I never get tired of its delicate beauty. "Vini Reilly" is another favorite, I quite like all the experimentation with samplers. "LC" and "The Guitar And Other Machines" are great as well. I don't care about stuff made after "Obey The Time" (1990) but I was told that "Time Was Gigantic... When We Were Kids" is good, maybe I should give a try.
