jazz thread.

what is everyone's favourite jazz musician out there? and the bigger question is, who likes keith jarrett--he is an awe inspiring pianist. his live recordings are definately worth a listen!

i don't listen to jazz at all. so couldn't tell ya. but i do have a favourite jazz song: take 5

I don't know if I can pick a single favorite artist, there are so many with large catalogues of essential listening. Some of my favorites are Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Mingus, Don Cherry, Albert Ayler, Eric Dolphy, Ornette, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Herbie Nichols, Bill Dixon, Jackie McLean, Cecil Taylor, early Archie Shepp, Steve Lacy, Sun Ra, Hank Mobley, Joe Daley, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, etc.

Mingus and Monk are along my favs as well. Mingus's 'Moanin' = absolute classic.

I do not like Jazz at all, however my girlfriend is a huge fan, she even plays the Saxo (a very unladylike instrument I have often pointed to her, not that she cares one iota) So in return to all the New Order she's forced to hear I am trying to feign some interest in Jazz. I kinda like funkier stuff like Maceo Parker and also big bands. Take 5 is nice too. However after 5 minutes of dark improvisational jazz I have to go and listen to Sex Pistols or Clash to wash it away.

Jeanie Maxwell & The Jazzwegians. They play the Curlers Bar on Byres Road every Saturday afternoon. Nice!

Nah, I don't have any jazz in my record collection, but I like what little I've heard from Muddy Waters, John Coltrane, Louis Armstrong, and so on.

This reminds me of "White History Month" on Late Night With Conan O'Brien a while back: the piece started out solemnly with descriptions of various blues artists, then a line about how they all ended up in this one guy's record collection (It turned out to be a celebration of his collection of blues albums and how he acquired them). Very funny bit.

Actually the three guys I just named are more associated with the blues, not jazz. :(

I do like what jazz I've heard, though I can't name anybody right offhand.

Hahaha I love Conan. As far as my collection goes, I don't have any - Yet. I plan on starting with the basics and going from there: Miles Davis, John Coltrane. I do have the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack which is jazz-esq. I like it!

Does the Style Council count?

At any rate, I picked up "The Singular Adventures of The Style Council" last week, excellent disc worth checking out.

No, I don't think the Style Council counts as jazz.( I quit buying their records after the second album, mostly out of boredom).

Got some Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Thelonius Monk, and John Coltrane, as well as the 5 disc compilation of classic jazz from the Smithsonian Collection

wow, that smithsonian collection has some absolutely brutal tracks, though. i'd say most of the first three discs are unlistenable. except for maybe bessie smith. but the rest is pretty ace!

was fed jazz with my baby-rice. daddy is a drummer and likes to do jazz. i don't care much for it. much of what he listened to was easy listening jazz like al jarreau and grusin.

Yeah, the first three discs are heavy on pre-WWII stuff, which isn't my fave stuff, but there are a few things I like about it, like the aforementioned Bessie, plus the early boogie-woogie of Meade "Lux" Lewis. I do play disc 5 the most by far of 'em all.

Miles, Chet Baker, Coltrane, Mingus, Billie Holliday and a guy called Vince Guaraldi which is awesome!!! He's the one who did the Peanuts cartoons soundtracks...

And of course our brazilian master Antonio Carlos Jobim.
