Only in Canada...

I haven't seen any manifestation like that, but last week i saw two people protesting against the "No to War" supporters.

They were for the war, and thinked that it's not justice at all to call them criminals....

Little things happan here. Our gobernment is for war, you know, and they have influence here.

Antiwar/Anti-anti war

Typical on my campus when this whole thing started...Now the anti-anti war guys have given up. The anti-war guys are bravely camped outside (for 1 1/2 weeks now)

And I do say "anti-anti war" not "pro war", because they're only getting in the faces of the "hippies" as they call them just to feel big....most of the kids here who are anti antis' don't know jack about politics anyhow, just how to piss people off

that´s one of the saddest things I´ve heard these days... and what did they say: "kill inocent people, kill inocent people!"? man, i don´t understand this world anymore...

You have to understand, this is a movement from the Westerners of our country and the official opposition from our government.

Basically, they are for the war, because they think that not supporting the US will have an economical impact on us.. that's the only reason.

Canada can't go to war, our equipment is completely obsolete, and we don't have camouflage suits for the desert (glory day, when our troops went to Afghanistan with their forest-green camouflage suits ) but we can do easy missions like protecting the ships and other stuff like that.

But you know, even though we usually do everything the US ask us, they still manage to tax our stuff like wood and wheat, even though it's against the free-trade agreement we have.. so I'm not sure anything will change much!

The National Post, Toronto's most right-wing paper, is publishing editorials that say the U.S. is going to wage war on US (Canadians)!!! For not joining them, apparently.

wow. fortunately we live in america, where we have freedom of speech and freedom to express dissenting opinions. when i hear sentiments like this, i wonder if those who share them wouldn't be happier living somewhere where dissent against the government is not allowed--like iraq, maybe?

...although i suppose they simply don't understand the extreme irony in their statements!

and finally...presumably, you mean 'hypocrite'. if so, it is quite clear that it is not the protesters who are the hypocrites (although i disagree with some of their ineffectual tactics and the tendency for some to 'protest anything'). read a bit about how iraq got biological weapons, the US response to iraq's gassing of the kurds in the 1980s, and traditional american attitudes towards nascent democratic movements in the middle east, particularly on the arabian peninsula.

Yes, Iraq was provided bio/chem weapons by us for use as a last line of defense against Iran. But let's not forget that our best buddies France and Germany provided and has been providing them since (mostly in the form of what is known as "dual use materials". It's a nice CYA move on their parts, but pretty transparent.)

Our response to the gassing of the Kurds was something I'm sure that you would have approveed of: we signed a worthless UN resolution condemning the action.

after the US senate voted to limit the export of certain US technology to iraq in response to saddam hussein's gassing of the kurds in halabja (known as the prevention of genocide act of 1988 and introduced by those strange bedfellows jesse helms, claiborne pell and al gore), the reagan administration was able to work with the republican house leadership and some house democrats to kill the measure. iraq continued to receive roughly $1 billion a year in US loans.

N.B. look at john lehmann's profession. under normal circumstances i would not be so picky about misspellings or misuse of the english language (although this one was quite a doozy); we are all capable of making mistakes. however, in our profession there is no room for egalitarianism--only excellence. as a result i hold educators to a higher standard, and i will not apologise for maintaining this position.
