Appeal to Good Music Fans

Reply if you like any of the following artists, and what you like about them (song, album, period, concert you went to, anything!):

XTC (after careful deliberation, Nonsuch has taken the cake for me. But Oranges & Lemons has been getting lots of spinning lately) Magazine/Luxuria/Howard Devoto (Need I say more... See my avatar.) Eurythmics (I've been on an Annie Lennox trip lately. Icy synth pop...mmm.) Radiohead (D/Ld some of the new tracks. Pretty good, like that Gloaming.) Bjork (Homogenic anyone?) Sigur Ros (The song Olsen Olsen is the soundtrack on which I will ascend to Heaven. If I get in, of course. Was a little disappointed with their latest, though) Squeeze (Cool for Cats was Jonny from Radiohead's first favourite song) Beach Boys (I'm referring specifically to Pet Sounds) Cyndi Lauper (Anyone else see her more than a 1983 flash in the pan?) Alvin and the Chipmunks (Children of the 80s, this is where you first heard all those classic songs! I still remember when I thought Help! was sung by the Chipmunks)

...Or, refer to another artist of the same ilk that you don't see here. I can't think of all of them on the spot!

It's hard to find people who like any of this music, and I need to discuss the finer points of these artists' work with somebody.

i've heard some of the new radiohead. despite all the negativity, i think its really good! i like sit down.stand up.

but, uh, sigur ros *really* should stop milking the same chord progression, cliched sound etc. i admit i liked the first album fora bit but now my interest has completely waned.

...alvin and the chipmunks are rad--the show was even better!

cyndi lauper a flash in the pan? she was omnipresent for about 2 years as she rode the wave of 'she's so unusual', and i rode it with her--i even went as her to school for halloween in 1984. her next album, 'true colors', was also fairly popular, so she was around for quite a bit of the '80s. she still puts out albums, pretty good stuff i might add, and she's happy to do her own thing without worrying about commercial success or the stresses of MTV. good on ya, cyndi.

bjork--interesting. i was into the sugarcubes back in high school--they opened for new order the first time i saw NO, and i was at the last ever sugarcubes concert, at the limelight in new york city in 1992, although i didn't know it at the time! i do like her solo stuff, although i don't listen to her all that often. i do like 'post' quite a bit, however.

and XTC, well, what can you say? brilliant. 'oranges and lemons' is probably my favourite album from partridge & co.

XTC, Radiohead, and Squeeze are absolute faves, while the one Magazine song I've heard ("The Light Pours Out of Me") makes me want to get into them more.

Funny, but I haven't listened to Radiohead in a while now....I'm sure I'll be playing Kid A non-stop in a few months. Anybody else go through that, where you can't get enough of an album or artist one month, then the next you can't even pretend to want to listen to them? I guess it's just burnout, really.

Oh and I love the Beach Boys as well (Pet Sounds is just brilliant)

xtc?--nah, never got into them. beyond my generation magazine etc--never heard of them....probably beyond my gneration radiohead--i lost interest in them after ok computer. haven't been keeping up at all. bjork--ah, i like some of her stuff. especially from post and her debut. she's a bit too artsy eccentric for me at times, but she's alright. still have to see dancer in the dark though. sigur ros--heard one song, and i thought they were alright. again, not a big interest in them either. squeeze--i cannot remember what they sound like. beyond my generation beach boys--that's beyond my generation. cyndi lauper--she's alright. i saw her on vh1's behind the music, and i admire her. i don't really know her music other than her 80s hits. alvin and the chipmunks--i watched them all the time as a kid! i don't really like their music, but the cartoon was great!

I used to really like XTC, up to the English Settlement album; Andy's cleverness (okay, sometimes ridiculousness) and Colin's poppier sensibilities fit together well. That's not to say that I don't like anything post-ES; all of their albums since sound pretty good. I prefer the original Skylarking (sans Dear God ) over the US issue. Oranges And Lemons and Nonsuch rate high as well, as do the Dukes Of Stratosphear. Too bad Andy got such a severe case of stage-fright, their show I saw in support of Black Sea was one of the most enjoyable gigs I've been to.

Magazine I like a lot as well, the Maybe It's Right To Be Nervous box is never far from the stereo. It was a thrill to hear A Song From Under The Floorboards and The Light Pours Out Of Me performed by Luxuria live opening for the Fall, cause I never had the chance to see Howard and Co. Great backing musicians as well, including one of the original Bad Seeds himself, Barry Adamson.

Squeeze are good, though I prefer them in single-sized doses, the only two albums of theirs I have are East Side Story and Sweets.

Of your list I love Björk, Beach boys (not only Pet Sounds), and I used to love Radiohead. Now I don't listen to their records regularly.

But I'll always love "Lucky", "Street Spirit" and "No surprises".

Uff, and Squeeze...i forgot them. Brilliant band.

i absolutely love Sigur Ros...Agaetis Byrjun is one of the best albums i've ever heard. track 4 (i forget the name...) is my favorite.

and Cyndi Lauper is absolutely fabulous! i'm sure to play one of her songs just about every time i DJ. the college i go to (Sarah Lawrence in New York) is very in love with her. people always request Time After Time or Girls Just Wanna Have Fun every time i DJ.

Time after Time is one of the greatest songs ever written IMO.

XTC and Squeeze!!!..loved them both back in my younger days...listened to Frank the other night...years ago I even sat thru a Fleetwood Mack concert cause Squeeze was the opening band...I think I was the only person there that knew who they were...everyone just sat there smoking their weed and drinking...while I was up dancing...it was like a private show...and we had front row seats...thanks to Dad for making me go to the Mack show with him!
