What do you think of Erasure?

Just curious but what do you guys think of Erasure as an electronic band and as a band overall?

I think they have some decent songs but I haven't heard or cared to listen to much of their new stuff.

What do you guys think of Erasure and why?

Burned out in the late 80s, in my opinion. Very poppy, although can't deny that tracks like Ship of Fools and Oh L'Amour aren't classics in their own lifetime.

The Erasure cover versions album was a travesty - a band desperately trying too hard to become popular again (anyone heard their "Solsbury Hill" - outrage !)

Vince should have stayed with Depeche Mode.

in the last few weeks, i've totally fallen in love with Erasure. i think that songs such as Oh L'Amour and Always are as good as Synth Pop gets. and in all honesty, i think i like them more than Depeche Mode now, due to the fact that i think they don't have any delusions about what kind of band they are and what kind of music they are good at making. plus, Erasure is as campy as it gets. :)

I was just flipping the channels on the TV and I came up on VH1 I love 80's Show and they were showing Erasures video "Chains of Love".

However one guy was talking about how "at the time it was OK for a band to be gay and sing and have a video like that."

Were members of Erasure really gay? Or was there type of music at the time just considered that way?

vince and gore are wonderful.he left depeche mode unfortunately and they together wrote songs like dreaming of me, just can't get enough and new life which are my favourites till today(add enjoy the silence to them). like the 80's erasure material a lotand they're one of first 80's bands i heard in 1988.

always liked 'the innocents' album, and 'chorus (fishes in the sea)'.

i don't know how to play the piano, but when i was a teenager i taught myself to play 'oh l'amour'. i was very proud and felt quite musical. of course, since the song is composed of only several keys it helped my effort immensely.

worst 'band' ever IMO; the lyrics would be lame coming from an adolescent, and the music is a textbook example of how not to use MIDI. I would rather listen to an hour of Celine Dion than a minute of that band, dead serious.

While the title of "worst band ever" is a much disputed one (Dire Straits springs to mind) I do agree with you that Erasure is fully qualified to claim it)

Yeah, I saw that show too. All the people being interviewed were shitting on Morrissey, claiming he was too whiney and stuff. Shallow f*ckers, I was kinda pissed. I mean, I'd think that I would be the one who wouldn't be able to understand all that eighties music (me being so young and all). But what did any of them know, they were probably all has-beens from bad canceled sitcoms.

Yeah, I read in some book that Andy Bell was gay. When they did the covers of all those Abba songs, he didn't reverse the lyrics (Gimme gimme gimme a man after midnight) and stuff like that.

I like Erasure, especially Wonderland, and I Love Saturday from the '94 album.

Was a fan until "I Say I Say I Say". That was the last of their material that I bought, just not impressed with anything since. Still think that "Ship Of Fools" is a classic, and "Chorus" is one of their finest albums.

Can I just say thanks Nikos for this thread. Reminded me I've not listened to "Chorus" for ages. Listening now, absolute class.

Early stuff was good, but they suck bigtime these days, there last album was full of cover versions, yuk.
