Travel the world

All right people, seeing as NOOL'ers come from all over the world, which countries have you been to on your travels and where would you still like to go?

Places I've been to: Africa - South Africa, Namibia, Angola and Mauritius Australia Europe - England, Wales, Ireland, Belgium, Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Greece, Turkey, Hungary, Czech Republic, Romania and Bulgaria.

Top 5 places I want to see:

1. Alaska - all the documentaries I've seen over the years and the books I've read all paint a picture of this cold, wild place where civilisation struggles to find a foothold and where hundreds of crazy adventurers go to test themselves, many of whom are completely unprepared. I just think it will be completely different to any other place I've been to before and unlike how I imagine it to be.
2. Hawaii in winter - I have a fascination for huge waves and I'd love nothing more than standing on the beach at Pipeline with a monster swell going off.
3. Amazon forest – before it disappears, I want to walk through the thickest, most remote part of the jungle (and hope not to have my head shrunk)
4. The 2 Poles – after my 2 years national service I had the opportunity to apply as a radio-operator at the South Pole, but went to university instead (money reasons). Don’t know how I’ll get the opportunity again, but I’m determined to get there.
5. Spain – the sun, the food, the people, the art and architecture – every person I know who’s been there raves on about it.

I reckon I live in one of the best places in the world, but I’ll always spend my money on travelling, rather than on life’s other comforts. I met my wife and some of my best friends through travelling, and you can’t buy that.

What's so special about Novy Jicin

Worked there as a young 'un for a summer. First love with a Czech princess by the name of Lenka. Ultimately doomed. Still makes me sad :0(

the americas: the US (duh! about 35-40 states including hawaii), canada, mexico, the US virgin islands, bermuda

europe: the UK (all 4 countries), france, spain, belgium, holland, germany, switzerland, austria, italy, hungary, slovakia, czech republic, ireland, iceland, turkey

asia: turkey (again), israel, jordan, thailand, malaysia, japan (but only the airport!)

africa: egypt, morocco

my favourite cities (in no order, except for the first): london, glasgow, barcelona, jerusalem, tel aviv, munich, chiang mai, boston, new york, vancouver, cairo

places i'd like to go the most: lebanon, syria, south africa, new zealand, russia, antarctica, iran, nepal, and a caravan trip along the ancient silk road, through central asia, from istanbul to china. BASICALLY EVERYWHERE!

oh, and this sounds really weird, but there's this place at the univ. of tennessee--knoxville called the body farm. they place human corpses in different locations (trunks, car boots, shallow graves, etc.) to see how the human body decomposes under different conditions, and at what rates. i really want to go there. i'm into the whole forensic thing, and it sounds fascinating. so add the body farm to my list. maybe when i have kids i'll take them there instead of disney world, or perhaps i'll go there on my honeymoon. yeah, that's it.

Damn right you are Push, Spain is the best place in the world. I have done my share of travelling and Spain still amazes me.

Favourite places:

Italy: No need to add anything else. US: I have had there some of the best experiences of my life, not all of them physical. Mexico: Amazing, and the land of my granny. England: The Arndale Centre in Manchester, tea and scones in a cafe in Southampton, curry, lovely old ladies wearing Asda bags over their peroxided heads, The Sunday Times in bed, the odd sunny day in a beer garden drinking Summer Lightning....Feels like home!

I'd like to read more stories on the places you've all been to. Reading other people's experiences is the closest I'm ever going to get to travelling. Elaborate please ! I'm doomed to a life of travelling between Edinburgh and this 'middle of nowhere' place I'm in now... at least until the kids are old enough to travel alone to go and see Granny.

oh, I tell a lie, I get to go to Disneyland Paris once every two years ......... mustn't grumble.

as i'm staying with my folks at the moment, a home swap isn't possible and i can't afford a trip to europe this summer, i'm afraid (will have to wait until the autumn to get back to the UK and points further, i'm afraid). and, trust me, florida is the last place you want to be in the summer! we're already struggling with close to 40C weather and sauna-like humidity!

you're always welcome for a visit, though, if and when i get my own place. that goes for everyone!

i do want to get back to barcelona in the near future, though...fantastic city.

I was in Miami in September a couple of years ago. The heat was unbelivable. I arrived to the airport and my then girlfriend was waiting for me outside with a car. The shock I felt when I left the airconditioned atmosphere of the lounge I will always remember. I can only describe it as a physical blow. Amazing time I had, though...Miami Beach, the everglades and then the Keys, Key West must be the most romantic place in the world...

haven't been to key west yet. or miami, for that matter! my parents go every year or so to key west, but i decided to go up to NYC this year to visit my friends instead. i'm not a real big beach person, to be honest! did you get to any of the drag queen shows? key west is famous for it's vibrant gay scene--my parents went to a drag show once and really enjoyed it, and my best friend's roommate does a drag show down there during the winter season.

when i was a kid we always came to florida (from colorado) to go to disney and visit my grandparents north of west palm beach, but we never made it down to miami. i've been living here for a year now and haven't had the chance to get to miami yet.

Then you must go to Key West soon. Amazing diving and the best sunsets in the world. Also to be noted: Key lime pie and key ale from a local microbrewery. Place truly full of drags. Very convivial atmosphere....must phone my ex girlfriend...now

Fish River Canyon in Namibia.

It's the second largest canyon in the world, and is best described as the Grand Canyon without the tourists. The most peaceful, spiritual and jaw-dropping place I have ever seen.

Boo hoo, I suck. I haven't been out of Scotland in seven years, and there is no end in sight to this run. (Mind you, it is God's Country, so there are worse places to be stuck.)

Which isn't a terribly impressive list, really. Spain, and Barcelona in particular, is my absolute favourite place. Apart from the Lothians, of course.

been to: India China England Scotland Alaska (someone mentioned wanting to go here. very very beautiful but watch out for the cold in winter (brrrr!!) and the mosquitos in the summer (word of mouth i was there in december, you'd think the cold would permanently kill off the little bastards)

like to: rest of Europe- France, Spain, Italy, etc in particular skiiing in the Alps, mebbe Austria or Switzerland

You know about these tiny blood-eating creatures that enter your body in strange and mysterious ways? We crossed the Nile from east to west in a feloukah (sailing boat). Then within 20 minutes or so I went from healthy to unconscious. If it wasn't for the nurse in my company I don't know where I would have been right now. Visiting a lot of the other countries wasn't always that much fun though as it was part my job which means being locked up into some building during most of the day and then being too tired to make fun. Well; cheeting a little here.

If you like your walking and your outdoors, Mick, then you're lucky living up where you do. The Missus and I try to get up to Cumbria or the Dales whenever we can, but living in London, we just don't get the chance often enough. There are many beautiful places on this planet, but those two areas are as good as it gets. Maybe we'll move one day!

Namibia is a special place - the desolate Skeleton Coast with the desert coming right up to the sea, the Fish River Canyon, the mix of people - it's one of those places that doesn't feel like anywhere else.

Namibia is a special place - the desolate Skeleton Coast with the desert coming right up to the sea, the Fish River Canyon, the mix of people - it's one of those places that doesn't feel like anywhere else.
