First album you ever bought

I was bored today, since all of exams are over and i'm waiting around to go home, and I began to think about my CD/tape collection. Obviously out of boredom. And I was thinking about the first album I bought for myself, not something that someone else bought for me or something my parents listened to that I liked. And, actually, the first album I bought for myself was Red Hot Chili Peppers' One Hot Minute, come to think of it. :o So, what album - not JD or NO necessarily - did everyone buy first and why? I can bet this thread has been done before. Oh well. I remember buying that album in '96 or '95 after hearing "Aeroplane" at a roller skating rink. I think that song might have been a minor hit in '96, but it wasn't too bad, and since I just got a boom box for my birthday, but no CDs or tapes, I wanted that CD. Back then, I just familiar with stuff in the US, with the exception of Oasis, which I thought was kind of lame. But, then, before the whole pop and rap explosion, I remember, from reading Rolling Stone, that American mainstream music wasn't that bad. Of course, aside from the Smashing Pumpkins, now I realize I was wrong and that NO, PSB, and the Cure, with several other British bands I've heard, are far better than what's and what was over here.

i believe the first album i ever bought was Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" when i was six.

My first buy was an Elvis Presley tape - Rock is back, must've been approx 1978. No accounting for taste when you're 10, but I bought it for the song "Baby I don't care" and especially that bit where he goes all mumbly and Elvis cool and keeps going "Baby, I don't care, care, care, care, I don't care..." and then the drums crash in and I'm in front of the mirror going off, skinny as a rake with a big boof afro, but in my head I'm a dead cert for the King.

The 'Empire Records' and 'Dangerous Minds' soundtracks, and maybe a TLC album were mine. Thank God those only lasted about a year. I feel filthy just thinking about them.

My first album that I purchased was Duran Duran...the Duran Duran album. I know, but I was 12.

My first CD purchase was better also....The Cure - Standing on the Beach.

Jackson 5ive - Going Back to Indiana back about 1970 or '71. I'd seen the special and just HAD to have the album. Michael was SOOOOOOOOO CUTE when he was black.

first lp i bought was number of the beast by iron maiden. hey i was young.

first 7" either whole of the moon by waterboys or reward by teardrop explodes - cant remember which came first

first cd was technique - before i had a cd player fist dat technique - still dont have a dat first dvd new order 316 - before i had a dvd player

First LP was a Madness compilation, back in the early 80s. Until then I'd been surviving on tapes and borrowings (Adam and the Ants, Back in Black, Ace of Spades, etc).

First CD was Spacemen 3's Recurring, cos of all the cool bonus tracks. Didn't even have a CD player, so promptly went round to a friend and taped it!

Well I started with a tape recorder and the first cassette album I bought was "Prince Charming" by Adam & the Ants, swiftly followed by "Upstairs at Erics" by Yazoo and "The Hurting" by Tears For Fears. A couple of years later I got my first proper mini-hifi with a record player and the first 12 inch single I bought was "Welcome To The PleasureDome" by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, soon followed by "Blue Monday". The first vinyl album I bought was "Low-Life" (straight up!).

Happy days. So innocent, so young.......

Wow! I had a hard enough time wrapping my head around that album when I was 19! I can't imagine how it must've sounded at the tender age of 5 (though you probably didn't have any preconceptions about music at the time, so Sister Ray probably didn't sound wierd). One of my absolute faves, though; I was pissed off when reading the back page of Alternative Press and seeing that one and Dark Side of The Moon listed as "unessential albums"

Anyway, as for me, my first music purchase was a tape of the Fat Boys, a short-lived rap group (at least short-lived in my record collection). My first CD: The Best of The Animals, a top-notch collection which avoided all the hippy-dippy stuff of the "New" Animals and stuck with the classic Price-Chandler-Valentine-Steel-Burdon outfit

Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" LP on vinyl - my local library were throwing it out - it cost me 50p - I was 9 years old.

Went home put it on my Dad's Garrard deck - settled down with the old headphones on and quite simply it blew my mind. Consider this was the 1970's - most of the other kids at school were listening to bloody Deep Purple ! I was forever labled as the kid who likes weird shit.

I immediately went out and bought everything vaguely "German". This approach lead to some great discoveries eg. Neu, Stockhausen, Popul Vuh etc and a few total disasters eg. Nena's 99 Red Balloons !!

T'was 1978 when, aged 13, I bought Outlandos d'Amour by The Police. Seems a bit naff now, but back then it was, like, hey, who are The Police, and what a great album it was. The only time my schoolmates ever considered me to be cool.

The Police were my favourite band until I got into The Jam in 1979, who lasted as #1 until early 1981 when I first heard Ceremony. The rest, as they say, is history.
