Anyone know anything about their gig or songs?
They are in Montreal in 2 weeks, the show is only 20$ CDN, so I was wondering if it was any good.
I've seen Johnny Marr live with The The in support for Depeche Mode a long time ago, before even knowing it was him, but I am curious.
Pretty small place, so it might be interesting...
Got the album as a big Smiths fan... It's reasonable enough, but not something I'd rave about to other people.
I've heard some good things about the live shows, though, and nobody should really pass up the opportunity to see Marr in some quality gee-tar action.

I saw him on Letterman a few months back, and I was less than impressed - he seemed to be doing an Oasis-like song that was kinda crappy. Don't know about the album, though.
yeah, i wasn't exactly thrilled with his solo work either. it wasn't bad, but it's not memorable. i wanted to see him live when he came to toronto in january, but now i don't think i want to see him. i go to concerts for the music, not really for the guitar skills.
I, personally, don't fancy the new material much as I enjoy the work in Electronic much better. Anyway, here's a review of a gig from the Marr group:
"Any of you folks up in the DC area tonight and parts north later who are even considering going to the Johnny Marr show should just go ahead and get your tickets now. Don't miss it. Man what a show last night! I was anticipating a good show but this was even better than expectations. Just a really great "rock show" in that 80's UK kind of way. Lots of guitars, pedals, effects, but used to "good" effect and not gimmicky or overdone. Zak Starkey on drums was possibly worth the price of admission alone. The songs live really had a lot more energy and intensity than on BOOMSLANG. Yeah 'Down of the Corner" and "You Are the Magic" had a distinct Oasis flavor to them, but while a lot of Oasis' tunes kind of run together for me and sound the same, Marr's all had a funkier groove to them like a lot of T-Rex's stuff. I think the band is playing the same set every show as the setlist and settings for the soundman was in a laminated sheet, but there was nothing stale about the set at all. They did the entire BOMSLANG album and one new song called "Back Attack" or something like that and then a really fine cover of Bob Dylan's "Don't Think Twice" done in a slower dreamy manner with only a guitar and keyboard. I think the show peaked about 3/4 through with the groove laden "Long Gone". Great combination of guitars and drums on that one. And true to his promise earlier in the evening that there would be no encores with that silly off stage on stage again business Marr closed with "Bangin' On"."
Alright, I got a copy of this album and I will listen to it soon.... too much music coming my way these days...

I saw Johnny Marr in at Maxwell's in Hoboken NJ (the site, fyi, of New Order's first-ever US show) and he and the band were really good. His stuff isn't as catchy as it was with the Smiths or the songs he did with Talking Heads and the The, but really enjoyable. He put on a really good show, and if you have the chance to see him in a small room, do it. The set is all the album Boomslang.

I wouldn't call the album crappy but "Oasis-like" is a pretty fair label for the album.
Actually, I think the guy who plays bass was in Kula Shaker, and the drummer is Ringo Starr's son!!!! Some friends went to see the band a few months ago and they quite liked it...
Saw them in Manchester 2nd April, better than i expected.
Will always be remembered for "tourn the fucking lights on we're not a goth band." Classic Mancunian talk :)
Dont think Mr. Marr was impressed with my demands for "This Charming Man" though :)
Good songs, i like the album, last ride, down on the corner, you are the magic and Long Gone are the best songs.
