Martin Gore's Counterfeit 2

I listened a lot to Countersink 1 when it was released which had some decent efforts on. A shame it lacked a bit of power, having the production of a mild curry.

WenMan, did you notice that David Gandalph had also released a solo album? - a review I read recently said that it was quite excellent, and they proceeded to ponder why he didn't branch out years ago. Also that he looked quite good nowadays for someone who had previously encouraged wraps of coke and sawdust up his beak.

It's yet to be released, but in this information-satured society, these things tend to leak out... It is (at least the songs I heard) a bit more harder sounding than DM. Think "Barrell of a gun" covered by Nitzer Ebb.

Yes I heard about it for the first on Kamar Khan's radio show. He actually played a track off of it. I liked the song he played, but I dunno the title.

I guess you'd expect more from a Martin Gore solo album after years of writing some great DM tunes.

The name of the album gives the game away Wendo. Martin L probably feels that pooped when he's just written 15 DM songs he wants to lean back on his armchair and play his own takes on songs like 'Bats in the Belfry' and 'Touch Touch the Beams on my Boom Boom Mic.'.

I thought Ballet Box of the Gun Ships was an outstanding song from the Mode. As good as some of their shit on Vibrator my Violator my Friends. In light of that spark I urged my pal to buy the entire album the other year and yet again my recommendation fell down a mighty cravas. It was utterly a waste of their time and ours. Funny though, me mate bought it on cassette which did nothing for record sales that day.

That was ace, in a dramatic shift of events, Don asked a perfectly legitimate question about bats, whilst I was answering chief Vendor's decision to accept that Martin L GolfBall's first album was a counterfeit product.

I think my answer suits both teasers.

And to top it all, I've now complimented Wen's surname with 'ace'.

both of Martin Gore's solo albums have been covers albums. pretty stripped down and minimalistic. they don't have the dance beats of Depeche Mode (then again, neither did the last DM album), but if you're a Martin fanatic, you'll want this stuff. I especially liked his cover of a Julee Cruise song on his new solo album because I'm a David Lynch fan, but that's just me. not essential to get, but okay.

His take on ol' Nick is what I'm most interested in, but these are some pretty good choices, so I'll be interested in some of the opinions from those who have the new one.

wenorder, counterfeit 2 is shit. i have it and will play a song from it on monday, but just to give you a taste of it. i dont have the new david gahan album, but the single has some non-album tracks as well. dirty sticky floors sounded great! i liked erasure's cover album a lot better than martins. his voice sucks on the album as does the music. martin has a great voice but not for a full-lenth album, it gets annoying after 1 song.

Both albums are streamed/Quicktimed at martingore.com and davegahan.com - I loved the first Counterfeit, but unfortunately the follow-up does not reach the same standard. I reckon Martin's voice has deteriorated and the songs/arrangements are just plain weak. Dave's album is much better, though there are a few too many quiet, low energy songs. Dirty Sticky Floors, Bottle Living, Hidden Houses and Stay are all excellent tracks. Good on him for doing something original though. After the sleepwalking exercise that was Exciter, anything should be an improvement.
