I love the new Liz Phair single, "Why Can't I"...I find it a heartbreaking work of staggering genius.

But Liz is a sellout and Pitchfork rates the album 0.0.

What should I do?

Dear Drunk in Cleveland,

I usually find that, when I'm depressed about an artist I love "selling out", I take out each and every album by that artist and have a marathon listening session. I try to pinpoint the exact moment when the artist in question began to betray his/her musical vision. Unfortunately, so far I've restricted myself to trying to pinpoint the exact moment David Hasselhoff sold out, which is usually apparent by the first song I reach on his first album. I then go to the liquer store and purchase more alcohol, then drink it in the safety of my underground layer, where I can relax in the nude without anyone seeing me. :barf:

I admit, my technique is extreme, but give it a try (especially if you have "Hasselhoff's Greatest Hits" which is a misnomer because all the songs did nothing on the American charts).

"We're already wet and we're gonna go swimming..."

Damn, the woman is inexplicably hot and yet crushingly melancholy...which is probably more than deserves to be said about said single.

So tell me...

Oh man...and now I read that Wendy Melvoin (of Wendy and Lisa) plays on the record...

Strap me down (he says, reminiscent of the recently viewed "The Princess and the Warrior").

liz is hot enough that it doesn't matter. and she is newly single so i may have to take a jaunt westward to the windy city.

i haven't heard anything from the new record yet

A friend of mine sent me a pic of her at an anti-war rally sometime back in which her protest consisted of being topless and holding up a sign with an unoriginal slogan. Boring. Not even tits could pique my curiosity enough to listen to her music. I thought her career ended back in the early 90's, not long after it began. Apparently the topless thing wasn't just a sad attempt to jumpstart her career. Who knew she'd put out another single?

Her only good song is "Supernova" and that's it. "The indie Madonna"... what a joke.

Let your own ears and heart be your guide, not like the spineless out-of-touch critics sitting in their unassailable ivory tower. Besides, by buying the album now (better not download it, cause the RIAA is gonna sue individuals, y'know), you'll be way ahead of the game when the critics start revising history in a few years.

If that fails, start posting on a Meredith Brooks board, where'll you be seen as absolutely, positively cutting edge.

He's got a point there Mr Drunk in Cleveland, maybe you should take note.

i was a big liz fan for a while, and my take on her is that she just doesn't have that same quality to her music. i've only heard the new song, and it's not liz. where is the sass and dead-pan musings? that's my two cents.

if you enjoy her new record, then don't let anyone guilt you into hating it cuz she sold out. mind you, that's irrelevent, since everyone in music has sold out at some point.

Have listened to 3 tracks off Liz Phairs new album; "extraordinary", "rock me" and "why can't i". The only track that got my attention was "rock me", a standout track.

It's morning now, and my soul was saved by my iTunes playlist...Peaches came on and showed Liz a thing or two about being a slut and how to work a microphone (not to mention an oscillator or two). Let's set it off, indeed.

is it called david hasselhorses greatest american hits? then surely if it was a hit in, say germany (as its hasslehorse), it qualifies?

I just can't stand it when decent musicians decide that they don't want to write their own songs anymore. I suppose you can say that alot of the greats out there don't write their own songs/lyrics (elton john and iggy pop to name a couple) but still..

Especially in the case of liz phair.. her singing and guitar playing aren't that amazing, but she wrote some really quirky/original/slutty stuff that you didn't get anywhere else and now you get songs from the same think tank that brought you avril lavigne. ohwell.
