my name is Alejo Damián (Alex Demian in english). both names have greek origin. Alejo means something like "the protector" and Damián "the man that came from the people". so my entire name means "the protector that came from the people". not bad, ah? the funny thing is that my parents didn´t have this information. the named me Alejo because they were reading a book of a russian zar named Alexis (Alejo on the translation). and Damián because i was born on the St. Demian´s day. :D

so what about you?

My first name - Sophia - means "wisdom" in greek (obviously...) My last name - Doskori(s) - is a puzzle to all members of my family... My dad insists it derives from the mythical twins Dioskouri, which means the sons of Zeus (Dias in ancient greek). Helen of Troy and the wife of Agamemnon were their sisters. Others think it's italian because of the region that the family comes from (it was inhabited by Italians way back in the 16th century)...

Go figure :shrug:

Is your first name Alejo or Alejandro? Because these two have slightly different meanings. From what I remember from ancient greek class, Alexander means "he who protects from men" (men as in masculine and not the "human kind"), Alex=he who protects and ander=andras (or anir in ancient greek)=man.

My first name is Richard. It's germanic and means "rich and hard." Well, I don't know about the money part, but...

My middle name is Duane. It's celtic, and means "from the dunes." My parents gave me this name in honor of my father's best friend in the Coast Guard. Interestingly, my great-great grandmother was Anna Downs, born in NY City to an Irish family from County Cork. Downs is a celtic variant for "from the dunes," just like my middle name.

My last name is Bernardi. It's Italian, but the origin is germanic (Bernard or Bernhard), and means "bear hard."

Okay, my full name is Ricardo Augusto Fernandes. Ricardo is an Italian name (in fact it's the Portuguese equivalent of Riccardo) and it means "powerful". Augusto comes from the Latin word Augustus, which means "majestic". My family name is Fernandes and it has no meaning besides "those who are from Fernando's family".

So, my name means "the powerful and majestic member of Fernando's family". 100% inaccurate. :nonono:

kamar means "moon" in Arabic my mum tells me, but my dad spelled it wrong. supposed to be with a Q. and the way i pronounce my name in english changes the meaning i guess. but it still means "moon" to me. Khan i think means sire or king. i like king. middle name is nawaz, have no idea what that means, and to a further extent, our tribal name is Khattak which supposedly has it's origins in Northern Pakistan and Afghanistan and is of the pushtun/phatan people tribes. if i tell people from pakistan im a phatan, they instantly show respect cause the phatans are known as fierce and brave fighters. damn was this explanation long :evil4:

my name is christine cooper wood. christine...well, that's an easy one. cooper is my dad's first name and a family last name. it's a profession: 'one who repairs wooden casks or tubs.' i imagine sometime back in the middle ages one of my english ancestors repaired wooden casks or tubs for a living. anyways...my last name, wood, means, erm, wood.

Andrei comes from the aramaic, and it means "gorgeous".

Mattiuzi means "genius" in esperanto.

i forgot to mention about my last names: Parella Terreil (both of my father´s family. Parella from my grandfather and Terreil from my grandmother). Parella is italian, from the north, supposedly from Torino. there´s a rumour that it might have been Pirelli and that it was mispelled when my greatgreatparents came here on late XIX century. Terreil is basque, from the french part. the legend says the Terreils came here as classical singers with a theatre company and decided to stay. from my mother´s family i have Cozza (my grandfather), italians from Sicilia, apparentely with something to do with the maffia. then Vazquez (my grandmother) from Galicia, Spain. so i´m 50% italian, 25% basque/french and 25% spanish. and you wondered why i´m so hard head! :banghead: :lol:

folk = germanic meaning: the (warrior) people hard = meaning: brave / strong combined: the brave / strong man among the people It has been used in the family for many generations.

i always thought a cooper was a barrel maker, kind of fits i suppose loads of surnames come from professions, fletcher (an arrowmaker), smith, baker, butcher etc makes you wonder what people were called before they had the job

My first name comes from the Latin "Patricius", meaning Nobleman.

My surname has a few different meanings. From French it means brave or valorous (modesty forbids confirmation of this :laugh: ), from Irish it means a swarthy or grey-headed man, which is interesting as I have very little black hair remaining, having started turning grey when I was 16! The old Saxon definition is crooked or bowed. No connection there then!

Nicolas means "Winner" in whatever language it is from...

In russian it's Nicolai, it english it's Nicholas, in italian it's Nicola.. it's pronounced "NEE-CO-LAW"...

As for LeBlanc, it means "The White".. it spells with a capital B for an unknown reason, but it's written in ONE word...

Of course my ancestors are from France, I have no idea how much generation though, but I'm pretty sure it's the 8th or 9th generation that is native from Canada! I saw my family tree once ;)

Altough my full name is Joseph Roland Nicolas LeBlanc..

It's a tradition to have Joseph for a boy and Marie for a girl as the first first-name.. the 2nd one is the one of the godfather (or godmother for girls)..

I was born Michael Francis Chau. Which was kinda odd, because everyone else in my family has names like , Vu Thuy Chau, Vuong Vai Chau and Diep Chau. I got and english name because I am the first from my family to be born in the states, so my parents wanted to give me a name that sounded american. The two doctors present in the refugee camp where I was born were named Michael and Francis. So they became my name. They screwed up my family's last name when they immigrated to the states. Most asian surname are written first before the first name. My father's name is Minh Chau Nguyen, but the documents showed Nguyen Minh Chau. My father could not speak english at the time so he could not correct this.

When I was 12, my dad became and american citizen and took that opportunity to change it. That is when My last name became Nguyen.

As far as meanings? Michael - one who is like god Francis - frenchmen Chau- pearls Nguyen Origin

I got those definitions from the name website.

My main complaint with my name these day is that I ended up two very common names. Michael and Nguyen. It seems like everyone in vietnam has that last name. :)

Yes! That's absolutely right :). Spotnick is also right. You see in greek one word can have a lot of meanings. Alex-... is used as a prefix, signifying protection (like ...-proof in english). There also was a Byzantine Emperor called Alexios
