Confusion onn the subway

So I was going to work, and decided to listen to my walkman, which I don't do often, since the subways in Philadelphia are notorious for thefts and assaults. But it was light out and a Saturday, and I put in Substance disc 1. So, what do you know, as the train's coming in, after "Blue Monday" finishes, the opening beats of "Confusion '87" begin, and I can't help of think of the video for the original version, especially when the girls are getting onto the subway train and onto another. They were going to the Funhouse Disco, however, and I was going to work for 7 hours. But, there was no confusion on the subway, other than what was playing on my Walkman. So maybe I'm slightly .

Is it just me or does the video for 'Confusion' suck? Arthur Baker is no dancing girl, that's for sure. He reminds me of a certain dancing girl from the Aphex video for "Windowlicker." I also watched a bit of the BM 83 video today and quickly remembered why I'd forgotten what it was like. And the "Here to Stay" video was quite a letdown too. Instantly forgettable.

I actually was at the Funhouse when I was a youngun. Went there for an underage night when I was like 13. Also went to Danceteria of Madonna early career fame for another underage night. Nothing better than awkward lanky kids in a hot club with an amazing sound system trying their hardest to dance well and not look like the awkward geeks that they are. Good times, good times.

I actually love both videos, especially HTS. Confusion has its camp value, such as NO's laughable attire, the dancing in the club, the fact that it's set in the US. I've actually watched HTS several times, and although the bits from 24HrPP mixed in with the bits of video footage gets on my nerves, the non-24HrPP footage isn't that bad. Of course, I actually had a conversation with a friend about the kid with the camera in that video, and somehow me came to the conclusion that he was a stalker of John Simm/younger Barney who took photographs and masturbated to them compulsively. But, I think that conversation was at 3am, so does it really count as a conversation?

slightly off subject: isn't your train & bus system called SEPTA? how often is it refered to as septic? just curious.

Indeed it is called SEPTA, but I haven't heard anyone call it septic yet. But, it's kind of funny, since, whenever anyone takes the bus or the subway, but not the train for some strange reason, they say, "I'm going to take SEPTA." So, I'm going to take septic?

but what about all those above-ground electric trains that go all through the surounding counties (but not amtrack)? aren't those part of the SEPTA system as well?

the but not the train part... They're part of SEPTA, but not referred to commonly as SEPTA, but rather trains.

Well, I guess I'm causing you some confusion about Philly's messed up transportation system. I'll clarify: Subways - the BSL, the El, and the subway surface lines to West Philly and the 'burbs. They are trains, but not communter trains and not Amtrack trains. Buses - well, they're buses, I certainly hope so. Commuter trains - part of SEPTA, but people say "I'm taking the train" instead of SEPTA. Amtrak - never ride it past Boston and never take an 18-hour trip on them to Chicago, or else, you'll experience something like this: :barf: :finger:

At least Philly has decent public transportation, LA on the other hand has notoriously late buses with bad transfer times, bad and inconvenient routes, 4 public rail lines systems (2 subways that primarily serve downtown, one train from downtowon to Pasadena, and the Metrolink that goes from the Ventura County to Oceanside). This crappy system serves the huge LA metropolitan area (the Valley, west LA, downtown, east LA, south LA, etc.) In order for me to go from the NW part of the valley to the SE part of the valley (Chatsworth-Burbank) it would take an hour and a half by bus. Bus lines in the Valley usually come by their stops only every hour, and if it's a large line, maybe every 20-30 minutes.

these are the ones with the SEPTA logo on them, that you'd see all the way out in Conshohocken and Paoli??

I didn't know there was a video for HTS; what's it like?

the confusion video is great, back when nyc was filthy and the trains were bombed to hell with graffiti, and i think there is a shot of the World Trade Center in the video too brings back memories of being a kid in the city

The video is shot in B&W and has several clips from 24HrPP in it, but those clips are juxtaposed with original footage. The stuff that isn't from 24HrPP involves John Simm, looking very much like a very young Bernard Sumner, getting stalked, or at least followed, by some kid in the audience at a concert with a camera. I think it can be viewed in the archives here, even if you only have 56k.

Those trains in Conshohocken and Paoli are commuter trains. They're not subway surface lines or trains that look like electric trolleys. Those trains, part of the green line, go to Southwest Philly or Overbrook or into Delaware County just outside of SW Philly.

maybe i should just go back there, and figure it out myself. :D

it would be a good excuse to get the future-missus back there (the furtherst east she's been is Colorado). "cumon baby, we're goin' to philly to figure out their mass-transit systems!" this should work like spanish fly...

Sadly, NYC eliminated the subway token this summer. Now we only use electronic fare debit cards (MetroCard). *sigh* You used to be able to use tokens as a tip in a restaurant, to pay for a newspaper, etc. It's impossible to get a newsstand or anyone else to take as payment a card with an electronic strip on it.
