I've been in the process of transferring my treasured (and rare) Factory videotapes to DVD-R... I current have :

Fact 37 Here Are the Young Men Fact 137 Shorts Fact 144 Durutti Column Domo Arigato Fact 207 Joy Division Substance Factus 25 4+1 Happy Mondays Party Live at GMex New Order 316 (transferred from PAL to NTSC) New Order They're Afraid of What They See (Japanese laserdisc video compilation, similar to Substance, current through 1994) New Order Story (From Japanese Laserdisc- full 2.5 hour version)

I have created very nice themed menus, and placed extras on all of these (for instance, the 316 DVD has all the content from the 3 UK DVD-Singles).

HOWEVER- I'm not interested in becoming a dealer here- I just don't have the time. So I list these, only to see if there's any interest from persons looking to trade some good rarities... I'm a dedicated Factory and 4AD collector. I prefer to trade with someone who actually owns the original videocassette so as to assure there's no stealing going on. However- that original autographed copy of the Ideal For Living 7" might get you somewhere :)

Hey Matt, I've got the NO Story (full length) on video, I tried to get an adaptor for my VCR to watch it but have been unsucessful. If I don't have any better luck getting a new VCR which could play it, I might be interested in trading my tape for the DVD copy (my DVD player handles only region "1" or "all" DVDs)

Hum, the Canadian version is full and will work on your normal VCR, kind of much cheaper than buying a PAL VCR ;)

Yes, I have the Canadian VHS as well- I chose to create the DVD from the Japanese Laserdisc (despite the annoying, and often incorrect, subtitles) because of the superior quality. Interestingly enough, the US video has a few things that aren't in the full-length version (an alternate video for World, and the Run video). I have included those bits on the DVD also.

In any case, I don't need a copy of the VHS version, but thanks anyway.

FYI- these DVD-R's are region free, but they are NTSC.

I was forced to make my DVD of the unreleased Joy Division Substance from a HORRIBLE, and unfortunately INCOMPLETE bootleg video. If anyone has the original Warner Bros promo cassette or at least a first generation copy, let me know- I may choose to redo that one.

... and another thing-

New Order Story was briefly available in the US on Laserdisc, however it was a single disc, with a good 20-30 minutes hacked off here-and-there. I watched the whole thing once, comparing alongside my Canadian VHS tape. Nothing terribly important is missing, however we completists must have it all!

is there any websites offering the Canadian VHS of NO Story? I seem to be shit outta luck when it comes to finding something like a VCR that can play PAL.

Trevor, your best luck would be to order it from HMV (hmv.com) or cdplus.com and ask them to find a copy and even if its backordered..

Otherwise, check Ebay often.

Would be nice to put those on DVD, but not from a rip.

Speaking of rip, which tools do you (not Trevor) to transfer to DVD? I've never been satisfied with my capture card's results...

I use a Formac DV Studio Pro analog-to-DV converter to pull in full frame 720x480 30fps video. This allows me to bring the video in as a DV signal through Firewire. I then use Quicktime pro to slice up and edit the video, and then Photoshop and Apple's iDVD to create the DVD menus. iDVD is surprisingly powerful, and does an EXCELLENT job of encoding the video.

Most "capture cards" work at really low frame sizes (quarter frame - which is sub VHS quality) or very high compression rates (lots of artifacts).

The DVD's I've made are as good as yer gonna get unless they release them officially. I'm not gonna hold my breath for "Shorts" or the otherwise unreleased Joy Division "Substance" video...
