new Orders set was dull and unispired though i agree with Green that the version of Blue Monday the played was the best live version i've ever heard. Unbelievable outro by Peter and Phil. I've got to get a recording.
Most important thing i learned at Coachella:
NIN fans are complete and total ASSWIPES who have no place on earth. Who the fuck wears BLACK to a show in 90+ degree weather, in Black vinyl pants (boys) or black ripped tights (girls)..not to mention the knee high black boots, the safety pins etc. Seriously, if this refers to anything YOU had on, then yes, you are an IDIOT who was being laughed at by many, many people both Saturday and Sunday. I overheard at least 20 people commenting on how funny and sadly humiliating it must be to buy into the whole NIN/Goth way of life. If your life sucks that bad, kill yourself now. BTW, Trent Reznor is a borderline pedophile who lives an extremly luxurious life that is no longer filled with the rage that he portrays in his music. This is called a GIMMICK to sell music to confused kids. It is Faker than Fake, it's a SHAM and you buy into it like a depressed thirteen yr old with no friends. I've heard sleeping pills are painless but hanging yourself like Ian would be more symbolic of your pain.
My take on yesterdays performance.....
Since I had my one year old daugther with me and my wife we opted to stand on the platform constructed on the right side of the stage about 70 yards back.I didn't want to battle anyone up front and I am glad I didn't with a baby in my arms. I have had my fair share of up front NO shows in the past. So from the platform was just fine especially with the video screens. On a sour note I would have to say that the sound was bad I have no idea what was happening.It would be good one minute and then horrible the next it sounded almost like the wind wasrunning the mixer with its gusts. On a positive note that was the best version of Blue monday I have ever heard and the only song were the sound wasn't fucked up.To me it sounded like the original studio version with kyile minogue vocals for the first 20 seconds of the song.This was a pretty good show but nothing to really jump and down for. It was nice to hear the JD songs and my Daughter was throughly enjoying ever minute of the show.Some of you who were there may have seen a little baby with a New Order tank top on. She seemed to be a hit due the 75 plus pictures that were taken of her through out the day and night.Hopefully the next time she gets to see NO it will be a bit better.......

Hey Craig, I was wearing a Get Ready shirt and took a pic you your wife and baby. You made funny faces to get him to smile. I've got it on my camera..if you want, i'll email it to you. I took the pic outside the Do-Lab by the Oasis (water sprinkler thing early in the day). It was one of my highlights seeing the baby in that shirt. Thanks! Where did you wife get the Movement shirt? You are right. I've noticed that too! How funny. I think she didn't expect New Order to be so...uh...old! She thought Barney was just a stand in (although hmm...one that sounded a LOT like the record.)

The Bravery and Bloc Party too. 2004 produced a good crop of new bands...many of whom should be sending royalty checks to New Order... :)
I only went to day 2, so I missed Bloc Party. I would have liked to have seen them. I missed the Bravery too - I think we were taking a much needed break in the shade at that time. I've only heard a couple of Bravery, but they were pretty good. The teenagers mentioned above saw the Bravery and said they were awesome. It's true - they should send royalty checks to New Order, and U2 for that matter. hehe
I realize I'm new here, so this is a cheap .02, but my .02 nonetheless...
First off, I really love New Order. Maybe as much now as I ever have. I'm 36 and went through my junior high and high school years with New Order weaving its way through my memories. Just to qualify.
That said, I cannot believe the trend here that seems to be against their new stuff. "Waiting for the Siren's Call" is such a feather in their cap, a CD that grows on me even more every time I hear it. The same thing happened with "Get Ready," and although I've played "Get Ready" into the ground I can still put it on today and totally get into it.
I think New Order has accomplished something monumental, to still be producing work that is pure New Order and (for me) stands up well with the best stuff in their catalog.
It baffles me a bit that one would complain about not hearing this or that song when that song has been performed a million times by New Order since 1983.
"Hey Now What You Doing," for those of you who weren't there, was excellent and for my money "Jetstream" was just vintage New Order. Those songs deserve to build an audience because they're very strong New Order songs (IMHO).
It's cool, it's just that reading this thread proves to me that companies such as ClearChannel, who buy up radio stations and make them all sound the same, playing the same "hits" because "people want to hear what they already know" are right after all. And how fucking sad.
Well, let me clear that up. I don't want to hear the 'hits.' I can't listen to any station above 91.9 on the dial. Prententious, I know, but I hate big radio rotation and big radio commercials.
I could really go without hearing BLT or Blue Monday live ever again. When you're a band with a 20 year+ history, there's just so much ground to cover. I just want to hear more older stuff - maybe even changed around to sound new. Don't need to hear "Perfect Kiss" like the record or anything - Change it up on the fly onstage and make it interesting. That's all I'm asking.
There's some nice stuff on the new record, don't get me wrong, but compared to the older records, it's just not as strong, in my opinion. I know the band is in a different place and all - I don't expect or want them to replicate "Technique" again, but it's hard not to compare it to the older stuff.

I had a fantastic time in the desert. I wore proudly my NOOL shirt (Green)- but only after the wind cooled it down.
Chatted with Green and The Happy One for a while.
I wish I could have met the UK ambassadors.
My wife, being somewhat short, wasn't up for a wade to the front, so we stayed in the middle.
We chose the wrong side, I guess, as I think I saw a herd of bouncing vikings on the other side of the barricade.
As far as the show- I think that may be the best version of LWTUA I've ever heard. Top Notch. Atmosphere- bad sound, great toon.
No real surprises, but after the great stuff in SF (Love Vigilantes, Run Wild), what do you expect? For a festival set, it was quite good.
The audio mix in the front was shit, but when we walked back toward the sound boards during Blue Monday, I found that it sounded GREAT back there, with less little NIN prick fans, too.
Did Barney really hurt himself surfing (Shark attack???), or was it dancing in SF?

Tell us how you really feel, Biz...but for the record I mostly agree. What's this "borderline pedophile" bit concerning Trent though? The fact that he attracts disaffect socal youth? I'm reminded of Depeche Mode in 89-90, filling up the Rose Bowl with those types.

My complaint was more geared towards playing all the new stuff being played concurrently, and not even the strongest songs on the new album. Like why no "Who's Joe?" f'instance? Ah, well, playing an abbreviated set by necessity is going to be a lose-lose proposition no matter how you slice it.
i lived near Trent's studio in New Orleans and heard first hand accounts of very young (15-17) year old girls who were invited to his place and then persuaded with alcohol and drugs to be a little more sexual than they expected. i've been to his studio a couple times and talked to him on many occasions so i feel like i have a good bit of knowledge to make the statements i made.

We're definitely on the same page there. "Who's Joe" is a brilliant opener and frankly if I wrote the setlist I'd have opened the show with that, not "Atmosphere."
Of course if I wrote the setlist I'd have killed the staff at the mixing boards with my bare hands. I saw I don't know how many bands at Coachella, many of them from right next to the speakers up front (including Nine Inch Nails) and every single one of them sounded killer. New Order sounded like shite for three + songs. How long does it take to figure it out?

Regarding the sound @ the main stage. I've been to Coachella every year (this was the last) and I know exactly where to be the best sound. Here's the problem; every year goldenvoice has a company called Ratsound provide the main P.A. system, and each year they prove more incompetent. The sound sucks every year. Every fucking year. Thousands have complained but nothing is ever done. This year was rare; the sound actually sucked at every stage at the whole festival, not just the main stage. And... Hooky's bass problems were form a faulty radio, it wasn't the engineers fault. The band sounded good from where I was.
(I am a sound engineer, working mostly in entertainment and corporate events. What follows is my response to the insinuation that the sound company was at fault for the problems at Coachella) Rat Sound is one of the best sound companies in the world. www.ratsound.com will give you a list of the clients they have worked for, including a list of EVERY SHOW they have ever done, dating back to 1981 in the SoCal punk scene. Dave Rat, the owner, is the audio engineer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, and others. He is very experienced and knowledgeable, and has earned the respect of nearly everyone in the live audio world. The sound system they had at the Coachella Stage this year (and in years past) was a V-DOSC system, made by a French company (I can't remember their name). The V-DOSC is a world-class system, as good as any system in use anywhere for this type of event. The mixing consoles they were using were world-class, also. This was not a bad PA system. In fact, the quality in general was fantastic. I thought Gang of Four sounded really good, and most of the time, New Order did, too.
Now: the 'Bass' problem with the New Order Set.
I, too was down in front of the Hook-Meister, and I thought that the low-end was going to rip my head off. I blame this on two things: being in front of the bass amp 'Salfords Back' and being somewhat underneath the PA cluster.
From all accounts, the sound was great from the mixing desks (of course) to the back of the field.
I don't think that Rat Sound was at fault in any way for this, it is just something that happens at these types of concerts- it can't be perfect for everyone. But if the promoter (Goldenvoice) had spent more $$$, well, then, I'm sure the problem could be solved, with more front-fill speakers, etc. Just expect to see an increase in your ticket price to pay for it.
20 years ago (or even 10), it would have taken 4 times as much sound gear to get 70% the quality of what we are used to now.
I was just happy to see the Order again, and to be able to chat with some of my audio, lighting and video buddies that I have met over the last few years.

All I know was that the sound at the main stage was pretty awful, and the sound in Sahara was pretty good.
Hi all :) I think everyone already did a good job of recounting the details of NO's performance and the rest of the festival, I just wanted to share my joy of finally seeing New Order perform live with folks who would understand. :D I too was surprised they played as many new songs as they did, which made me glad I'd ordered the CD from the UK a month ago rather than waiting until it was released in the US... There were lots of other songs I would have liked to see them play as well, but they did only have an hour, and really it didn't matter much to me what they played. :)
My boyfriend and I only went for Sunday, and we came a bit later in the day as well, so we caught The Bravery (who we hadn't heard before, but were pretty good, despite some equipment trouble), NIN (we also were rather disappointed with their set), and The Prodigy (who rocked in a big way). We were kinda disappointed that so many good acts were all on at the same time, but I guess that's bound to happen at these kind of events.
Now only two more days until New York...!! 
I agree with Tracey, no matter what they played I was pretty happy. There were certainly noticeable sound prob's but being a student of ltd fundage and a sucker for the rumour mill, I jumped on the first (and final?) opportunity to watch the boys live. So hopefully this PhD thing will be worth it and NO will not retire when I get a real job 
Coachella:
Couldn’t get as close as I wanted for this one, but I was considerably closer than I had been for Bauhaus the previous evening (sidenote: Peter Murphy dedicated “Dark Entries,” the last song, to Ian Curtis). (Had also briefly met with Sam, Al Jarvis, and Johnny Giles, and Andy at Coachella the previous day, who all seemed to be in good spirits, including Andy who has been so gracious as to call me a “septic come lately” before online.) Had watched Gang of Four with Allan (Green) and my gf Stephanie before New Order’s set (Tristan was there somewhere also, as we’d met up with him earlier that day), then Steph and I moved in a bit closer until we were maybe 50-70 feet from the stage. They turned the video screens on for this one, so we got a good spectacle even with plenty of people in front of us. I was surprised at how many people showed up for this one, most of whom just wanted to hear “the hits,” but that’s to be expected from a bunch of festival-going septics.
Atmosphere: Nice to hear this one after it was dropped from the Oakland setlist due to time (presumably). The sound was fucked up on this one and some other songs, but at least Barney didn’t whoop around a lot, having apologized for tearing his foot ligament (couldn’t make out his opening comments…something about surfing or his injury?). Still not the best intro song for a festival…too sedate and stately.
WFTSC: Me and my gf were the only ones around singing along to the new songs, but it still sounded great, even if the crowd weren’t too into it. At least I got to yell the lyrics into the frat boy types standing in front of me. Tee hee.
Regret: The crowd finally got really warmed up and all of the idiot girls around me and Steph were singing along to this. At some point between songs Hooky told the photographers to all fuck off, leaving Barney saying, “You can take all the pictures of me you want” or something to that tune.
Transmission: Good opening synth sound again…the crowd seemed to enjoy it.
Hey Now What You Doing/Krafty/Jetstream: Low crowd response. Barney kept saying “Hey, what do you know…another song from our new album.” A block of new stuff wasn’t what the crowd wanted, but at least I enjoyed it. HNWYD had some missed cues.
BLT: Barney did his best to dance around a bit, but he was clearly in pain and couldn’t swivel too much. Of course, your typical audience loved it. Barney missed his cue for the last lyrics and the song ended a line short.
LWTUA: Pretty good reception, with a nice singalong for the chorus. Hooky dedicated it to David (Sultan), then told him to fuck off. I laughed.
Crystal: Not the biggest crowd pleaser, but they wouldn’t have recognized when Barney missed his cues on this one anyway.
Blue Monday: Barney added a bit more keys to the opening of this one, and the Kylie sample made its appearance at the beginning as well (though it seemed to confuse most people). Barney was looking very much in pain from the hurt foot by this time and just stood still cringing for most of the song, then left the stage while Phil and Hooky finished the song. Hooky kept playing the bassline for quite some time after the song was over. Sounded great! And of course the crowd loved it, but fuck those people.
Overall, a fairly toned down show compared to Oakland. No Temptation or True Faith, which no doubt disappointed some people, as did the relative overabundance of new material given the one-hour time set time. Lots of missed cues and sound problems. Barney looking pissy and injured the whole time, as did everyone else. Mentioned at the end that they were sorry for not being in a better mood tonight but that’s how it goes. If I didn’t know any better, judging by all the missed cues, sound problems, foul moods, and unfamiliar songs, this could’ve been a gig from the mid-80’s. Or not. No surprises for this one. It was a great pleasure to watch the whole show with my lovely girlfriend at my side. A nice dessert after the far superior Oakland show.

i guess the whole bass issue i had was a product of being SO close. im glad i had my plugs in, my whole body felt the low end. eventually Hooky did plug his bass in to a hard line after he kept losing the signal on the other side of the stage.
Good summation David, the next afternoon, when I woke up my brother handed me the USA Today with their Saturday Coachella coverage. They had a fabulous pic of Peter Murphy's stage entrance; made me wish that I'd been their for the set now. If you haven't seen it, it's the third pic in this series....
The guys from Goldenvoice really sucked as* on this one by giving NO only an hour to play.
I was happy as sh*t to be able to catch the guys pay in Indio because who knows if I will have the opportunity to see a full performance. I think WFTSC is the most cohesive mental effort that defines who these guys are in relation to the mentallity of Joy Division since Power, Corruption and Lies. Some may disagree but this is just my fuc*kin opinion. I'm entitled right. Not to negate anything inbetween but WFTSC is fuc*ing brilliant. The whole show was a highlight. The whole experience was surreal. We were standing about 6'clock from the stage and moved to a more open area about 9'clock from the stage. The crowds wre much more lax this year and the west side of the stage is usually less congested. Here are some reactions;
ATMOSPHERES - I was elated as mofo to hear this song. You hear it in your head. Now just imagine it in front of you. Till now the only version I have to listen to is of Les Bains Douches. I have been really lovin the keys on this song as aof late so as an opener it could not have been better for me. Sound problems did not effect this song. The most notable sound problems were during the second song -Waiting for the Sirens Call.
REGRET - by the way the weather situation was perefect for the performance. The breeze just right. Dust storms were in full effect but were removed from the event like a protective shield. It set a perfect setting. Sound problems were cleared up for the most part and the crowd seemed happy to just be in the moment enjoying a favorite band of theirs.
TRANSMISSION - Hooks influence on the vocals for this song was strongly evident. One of my favorite songs and in perfect form as live versions heard on Les Bains Douches. These guys definantly play this song as if Ian was still on stage. I realize Hook always song backup vocals on this song but he fuc*in makes that Shi* flow. I listen to the version on Les Bains Douches and Hooks vocal are now even more defining in the chorus even over Ians at this concert. Will not forget this concert or this performance.

Love will Tear Us Apart - What can be said. The band's definative radio song. The beginning drum beat and bass were right on cue. The keys were sic as hell. Everybody was completly absorbed by the moment.
Blue Monday - Rounded out a great performance.
I think the guys from New Order realize that they do not need to escape Joy Division. It is what they were and who they are. Waiting for the Sirens call is these guys in pristine form of who these guys are as people. I am glad they did not play some washed up greatest hits set and these guys do not have to prove shitte to anybody.

Everyone gets 1 hour to play on the stages. That's just the way it is at Coachella. Goldenvoice has done a tremendous job with the Coachella festival since 1999 by bringing in all sorts of acts from a variety of backgrounds. You may be purely a New Order fan, which is your own right, but don't be so ready to attribute blame and not realize what a tremendous festival this is and how difficult it is to organize so many bands and acts in one venue.
