New Order live @ Rock Werchter - Werchter (BE) 2005.06.30

A press statement has just been released confirming that New Order will play the Belgian Rock Werchter Festival on THURSDAY, June 30th on the Main Stage, along with Ozark Henry (a Belgian artist), Snoop Dogg (don't ask...) and the Chemical Brothers (no surprises there, I guess).

Tickets go on sale via phone & internet tomorrow, and in the usual ticket outlets on April 16th. A dayticket for 30/6 costs 52 Euro, an all-in ticket for the 4-day festival will set you back 120 Euro.

The news is not yet on the official festival site (http://www.rockwerchter.be) but it will be shortly. I will forward the official press statement to Nic.

Bollocks. I knew I'd have to miss a gig at some point this year, and I think this may well be it. Oh well. This is eating into my holidays though! :\ohwell:

Are Kraftwerk playing the same day as New Order????? now that would be worth checking out.

This is rather pleasing news, but is seriously gonna fuck my Turin plans - will now have to get up very early on the Friday morning in Belgium, head back to England, and then off to Turin.......already booked by Italy flights for Friday lunchtime!

Well, the main stage is, err, the main stage, and the marquee is a small tent in another part of the festival site. Fingers crossed that the scheduled time for both bands doesn't clash!

How is Belgium looking for prices?

Tickets for the Order night are €52.

Im going to this. Booking tickets tomorrow. What is the easiest Airport to get to the site? At present, Aer Lingus and Ryanair are both doing flights for around €100 including taxes, etc. Both fly to differrent Airports, Aer Lingus to Brussels (BRU), Ryanair to Brussles Charleroi.

Which is closer / easier to get to for the festival, and how long should I leave to get to and from the Airport?

Closest airport to the festival is Brussels (BRU; = Zaventem), appr. 25kms by train to Leuven. From there there are busses to the festival (15 mins).

Please take into account that it's the first festival day so it's going to be busy with people going to the festival camping in the afternoon. Concerts start at 1800hrs. There's no fixed schedule yet but it would not surprise me if New Order play early in the evening.

For the camping you need to buy a seperate ticket (15 euros). Flying at 6am should give you more than enough time to get festival; the campings are open from 1200 on Thursday.

My ticket has just arrived!

Well at least I thought it had, there was a letter with a Belgian postmark waiting for me. Now it's all gone tits up. Seems that the Belgian ticket agency require me to pay them €59.70 within 4 days of the date of the letter, which was 19th March. Trouble is, it's taken 12 days for the letter to arive, which means my ticket may no longer be held.

Any ideas Jan/Ben?

I've ordered tickets through this website before from the Netherlands and never had any problem with the late payments (I usually get that letter a week after I order). So if you make the money transfer you should be fine. Not sure how this works from the UK, from the Netherlands I always use the 'acceptgiro' that is attached to the letter. It will probably take another two months before the tickets arrive.

Cheers Coen, the only problem is that the money transfer cannot be made from the UK - it seems that Belgian banks have a different system. I tried yesterday! I thought I'd paid by credit card on the site when I ordered the ticket, they took all the credit card details etc. Confused!

I never ordered anything from them with a credit card. As you say you would expect to have paid if you used your card. But then you should not have gotten that letter. I guess it's best to contact them.

Anyone knows if Werchter has livestream internet? In the past they had.

Although Belgium ain't the center of the world, you need some guts too wait from 1985 til 2005 to return back to our country. But no weeping especially when you remind that without these guys a lot of groups on the Werchter list not would have existed. NO was one of the first groups to mix rock and dancebeats, Peter Hook mentioned during the concert that The Chemical Brothers were watching them in the frontstage and asked Tom Rowlands if he was there for some inspiritaion. The band garbbed randomly from a richfilled bucket of pearls and of course they played some JD songs, indeed young lads thats one and the same band. Even without IC Transmission and LWTUA sounded overwhelming. Bernard Sumner maybe a goofy dancer and not a great singer, but his sense of humor is even worse, he called JD thatserious art rock band and explained that BLT was about the homosexual realation of the other three band members. The famous lats words were:AND NOW BLUE MONDAY OUR MOST POPOULAIR SONG BUT FAR FROM BEST, after he promised that they will return to belgium after 20 years.

Yesterday was without fail one of the worst days of my life (with a tiny silver lining).

We set off at 15.15 to go to Leuven which on a normal day takes about 1.5 hrs. We got there at exactly 19.05 ! The traffic was a fooking nightmare. Jan (Little Boy Lost) helped us find our way to the station in Leuven, long live the mobile phone. We really owe him big style, and he wasn’t without problems himself. Anyway, got on the special bus from Leuven to Werchter which dropped us off at the site at 19.30. We could hear them playing Krafty in the distance, knowing that we would have already missed a few tracks. After a walk of about 1 km we finally got to the gate (by that time, we had heard WFTSC, Transmission, YSF, BLT, TF all in the distance). It then took us until 20.10 (at the end of LWTUA) to get through the gates because of the massive crowd. I worked my way (rather violently) to the front where we had the pleasure of watching them play Transmission and BFM. And that was the end of the set ….. I could have cried. When Barney said: Thank you Belgium see you in another twenty years, or words to that effect, I thought to myself: whatever happens next, I will NEVER EVER AGAIN set foot in Werchter !!!…. I spoke briefly to Al and Ness, who was clearly having a great time. Since we hadn’t had anything to drink or eat since we left home, we hit on a few stands first to get nourishment and promptly lost sight of the others. In the meantime, I had been phoning around frantically to find emergency troops because the babysitter supposed to be doing the second shift of looking after my kids had vanished without a trace and someone had to relieve the first sitter. Luckily I had found a very kind neighbour who came to the rescue and was still there when we eventually got home.

I wonder whatever happened to Jan and Tim, because they were even later than us due to other unforeseen problems.

So, for those who did get the full set: Was it any good?!? I’ve since found out they started with the same three as at Hyde Park. So didn’t miss much there, but I was sick to be hearing YSF in the distance. Finally a worthwhile change to the set and I wasn’t even there to see it! Hope the rest of you enjoyed Kraftwerk as well. We were that pissed off, we left at the back of ten (and virtually flew home because there wasn’t a car in sight all the way!).

Anyway, as for the silver lining: as we were walking around in the mud cursing traffic, set times, queues, crap food and what have you … who should I bump into? The Hookmeister himself. I asked for his autograph but of course we didn’t have a f’ing pen, so he posed for a picture with me instead:

I was also one of the fans underestimating the crowds comming into the concert-area. I was well ahead of time, but didnt expect an hour to get through the security - just for a lousy armband. With that I missed half of the set, but the band was great once more. Mr. Sumner concluded the hour for NewOrder saying: "you were a great audience - and we were a great band." I hope he meant this evening. Did he say they come back next year or in two years. Last time I saw NewOrder live in Cologne Mr. Sumner was quite unhappy with the crowd, even making comments. Yesterday I heard Mr. Hook cursing at a guy in the audience bouncing about, calling him a d...head. Something else to remember and tell the grandchildren. I was also dissapointed that I couldnt find any N.O. T-shirts, but at the time looking around I obviously missed Mr. Hook wandering through the mud. *sigh* I do hope those guys come again for a indoor tour with encores and all that.

Hellgium - the day that wasn't meant to happen

A few months ago, I tried to get a ticket for Werchter over the internet, as per earlier in this thread, but I failed to do so, my command of Vlaams not being any good whatsoever. In retrospect, I should have given up then.....Anyway, Jan (Little Boy Lost) came to my rescue and got me the ticket......

Hereby follows a tale of woe that would test the mildest-mannered amongst us.

Train to Brussels was fine, got in only about 3 minutes late, no problemo. Asked a train staff guy (in French) if he spoke English. Non. Fair enough, I know enough French, I say to myself. I asked him which was the train to Leuven. Dix-sept. On I get. An hour later and no sign of Leuven, so I rang Jan (who lives in Leuven and was waiting for me there with the tickets). "Just coming into the University now"......

Friendly neighbourhood rail guard had sent me not to Leuven, but to the French University of Louvain-la-neuve, some 30km south of Brussels and 50km from Leuven. Shite. Order on at 7.20, it was now 6.00. I asked at the University Travel Centre which would be the quickest way to get to Leuven, they said that I should get on the next train (in half an hour) and that would get me to Leuven at 7.27. I suggested to Jan that he should go on without me, that I would see him there, but Jan stoically wanted to wait for me regardless of his own fate in terms of seeing the gig.

We arrived at the venue perimeter just before 8.00 to hear BLT being played. A 1km walk to the entrance gates, during which time we heard True Faith and LWTUA, saw us faced with a queue 50 deep just to show the tickets. Temptation came and went without us moving more than a few yards. As desperation took hold we barged through a few rows, and got to a vantage point where we were actually able to see the stage through the entrance gates, some 300m ahead of us. Blue Monday, and with it the Order and our hopes of seeing the band, came and went. Twenty minutes later we got the fucking wristband on and into the venue. I was that close to chewing the bastard off and chinning the nearest Turk, you have no idea what homicidal rage was brewing at that stage.

We met up with some of the Vikings, Al, Greg, Ness, Steve, Simon, Neil, tother Steve, but couldn't get hold of Geri and Deek. We heard from ATR and found our way to the food area. As Kraftwerk came on in the marquee, the heavens opened, and stayed open. As we were running so late I still had my overnight bag with me. Three hours of pissing rain later it dawned on me that the next day's clothes were drenched as well. I've been happier.

At least Kraftwerk were good, but we gave up after that and headed for the bus back to Leuven queue. Unfortunately the deluge had turned not only the venue fields into a quagmire that was ankle-deep, but it caused the run-off pit from the toilets to overflow as well, so we had a twenty-metre stream of shit to deal with. Shitstream lover I ain't.

Got back to Jan's at 2.30. What a night. Don't think I have ever been so disappointed over a New Order gig before. Not so much for me though, but for Jan. I've seen the band 50+ times, Jan hasn't seen them for twenty years.

If anyone with band management connections is reading this, please urge them to return to Belgium soon, in an indoor venue. Not in another twenty years. Jan at least deserves this for his patience and suffering, not least his hospitality.

I saw them and I think they were great! Since it was the first time they came to Belgium in 20 years and I'm a poor Belgian, it was the first time I've ever seen them live. Great experience !

Wow...if I read the horrorstories here I feel almost guilty admitting I had a brilliant time at Werchter yesterday. We arrived on the bus from Leuven at 6 o'clock at the festival, just when the Bravery started. Must say I liked them, despite the terrible sound. A couple of good songs. After that we went to the front of the stage and I was surprised how easy it was to get to the first row, on the right just in front of the speakers. No surprises to the setlist, except YSF (no comments on Kraftwerk from Barney). 2 songs from Waiting For The Sirens' Call: Krafty and the titletrack. I thought they played a bit longer than scheduled ; about 70 minutes i'd say. Great perfomances of Crystal, Temptation, Transmission, Krafty. Personal highlight was when Hooky came all the way to the right and doing his stuff on Regret just a few meters in front of us. According to a Dutch website The Chemical Brothers were in the crowd, which I already suspected as Hooky made a remark to someone in the crowd called Tom (Something like: Tom, I know what you're up to, you're trying to get some tips for later on). Barney's dry humor (he was very chatty) was largely lost on the people around us, mainly Belgian teenagers who were waiting to hear Blue Monday (which according to Barney is their "most popular song, but not necessarily the best one"). (And he's right, messy performance and not the highlight that most people were waiting for). Also saw Kraftwerk, again close to the stage in the full tent. Main difference from the show I saw in Amsterdam last year was the crowd, who were much more into it. Other than that; great show, nice visuals, great sound. By the time we got out of the tent it had started raining, which didn't stop the crowd from getting into the Chemical Brothers, who were doing their usual stuff, so no surprises there. But always enjoyable.

Listen to Krafty and Transmission on Rock Werchter! And hear Hooky talk to the Chemical Brothers in the audience.

That story is even worse than the time it took me and a mate 6 hours (buses, crowds, jams, torrential rain, wrong timetables, long walks, the tube, another late night bus, another walk in the rain, etc) to travel a measerly 10-12 miles to get home after one of JM Jarre's Docklands gigs in '88. Really makes me wonder why we bother!

Certainly am squire, Dublin and France. Was going to do Turin as well but had to scrap that one as we now have a Digital rehearsal tomorrow, and I couldn't get an earlier flight out of Turin tomorrow morning.

My experience was a good one! I really felt for Geri and Tim's ordeal wasn't much better either. They really do need to sort the entry system it was ridiculous. Luckily we got in about 10 minutes before they came on, but I expected to be in the site a lot earlier.

They played extremely well, didn't spot any mistakes, autocue must have been working properly. Much less dangerous at the front than Hyde Park, people were even polite enough to let me through as I had come from England just to see NO!

Seeing Kraftwerk for the first time really added to the evening, the extreme weather put us off watching the Chems though. Never seen rain like it! Jarvo's leg hair was still dripping when we got off the bus at the other end. All adds to the experience I suppose.

Yes once again it was a quality gig. Hooky was prowling the front of the stage doing his usual poses. Another few let on's to ness.

If was great to speak to the German order again. Wathing them go barmy is quiet an unbelievable sight. At one point somebloke was all over the place, but Simon and Neil saw them off quiet quickly.

Kraftwerk were great what i could see of them but you just needed to close your eyes and let the music lift you. I had never seen until belguim.

Once the rain started It was unbelievable. We thought it would stop soon but it kept on coming. So we made a bee line to the exit with a few thousand others. It seemed longer way out then on the way in but at least it was a road.

Anyway we had a top time and it was good to see you all there

I'm sorry to hear so many of you had such an awful day. It was pretty chaotic to get there indeed but the gig was incredible. You have to bear in mind that they hadn't played Belgium for 20 years ("Charma Chameleon was number 1 at the time" joked Barney). So, for people who hadn't seen them for so many years, it was the perfect setlist. Even removing Jetstream and Run Wild and putting Your Silent Face instead.

I thought Barney, for his own standards of course, sang pretty well, even better than in Hyde Park. They were supposed to play 65 minutes but got onstage 5 minutes early and left 5 minutes late, wich made a 75 minutes show. Marvellous gig and, once again, sorry, truly, for all of you who couldn't make it in time.

Oh no, I had a pretty good time in 2001. My nasty adventure goes back to Electronic's Paris concert (missed the gig and had to spend the night in the nightclub before I could catch the first train in the morning).

What are client like JG? I saw 4 songs in Glastonbury, but was pretty pissed off cause I was really there to see LCDsoundsystem who they had switched with.
