Sumner's official "maybe" for North America

It’s a new world for New Order these days, where many things are planned out in advance. Still, the band is keeping their options open, only scheduling a handful of North American dates to start touring in support of “Waiting For The Sirens’ Call.” Bernard Sumner told us he’s taking a wait-and-see approach to touring, “I don’t know what it’s going to be like. It might be rubbish. I might not like it and get stage fright, but it might be wonderful. I don’t know. They want you to book like 30 dates, but it’s not wise. You could turn around after the second one and go ‘I hate this. I want to kill everyone’.”

New Order played Coachella over the weekend and Chicago last night, and will settle in for a date tomorrow at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom. Fans of the group will be happy to know that there may not be a long wait between albums next time around. The singer explains, “I think we spent seven months recording this album, and there’s more material. There’s actually another album. We recorded 18 tracks and all of them are really good tracks, and I think we need to record about another four and then we’ve got the next album without a huge gap.”

You have absolutely no reason to have stage fright. The thousands of people there, are there to see you because we love you.

It would be different maybe if you were playing to a crowd that might boo you off the stage, but you are a headliner and the crowd is there specifically to see you.

You had mic trouble at the beginning of BLT in Chicago, did anyone boo? Of course not.

I know I speak for all your fans, we love you and want you to come back many times for many more years. Your core audience is aging gracefully with you all and we're right with you along the way and always will be.

I am crossing my fingers for this one. Toronto needs a New Order concert!

first it was "we need two more songs" and now it's 4? good, but don't make it too high or else the album will never come out.

You forgot Calgary as one of the most requested cities. ;)

The Saddledome is empty right now. I'm sure they could get a deal on it.

Read it again - he hasn't said they will be doing loads of dates, he said it wasn't wise to commit to a tour. In plain English, that means that he won't be doing one!

This is rubbish. On the alternative video show "The Alternative", Bernard said that they hadn't done a proper tour of the US last time (and they didn't!), and that they'd do a full one this time around.

Now he's not so sure. Stage fright? Gimme a break! I've seen them (not counting the last tour) the previous 5 tours; the man ain't no Andy Partridge.

The problem with New Order is that they've gotten rich and happy and they don't give 2 dog's droppings about the fans anymore.

Just curious...what have they said or done to suggest they don't give 2 dog's droppings about the fans anymore?

And if Barney's rich and happy, well then why should he feel obligated to tour if he doesn't enjoy it? Do you like being forced to do things you don't enjoy?

After seeing NO for the first time in NYC, I can say I'd go see them again (and again and again) in a heartbeat. But I can relate to Barney's lack of enjoyment of touring. I've never been a touring musician, but I know I wouldn't enjoy being away from home for months at a time, waking up in hotel rooms in strange cities every damn morning unable to walk into my own kitchen to pour a bowl of cereal. Few people would, I imagine.

That quote about cereal definitely put things into perspective lol.

New Order concert was cheap compared to other concerts. You don't want to know what I paid for my U2 tickets tonight in Chicago. I paid more for Erasure, I've paid more for Depeche Mode.

I really don't think any concert should cost more than $50, but $50 for New Order compared to all these othrs is cheap.

My 2 cents

I was at the Chicago show and it appeared that the band were enjoying themselves, and I haven't heard otherwise from any other gigs. So hopefully they have fond memories of the shows in the States and do another tour.

Of course, Bernard sustained an injury and maybe that is what might get him thinking he is too old for touring.

But I hope they do return to the States ( and CANADA! - as that creates a great excuse for me to visit the great white north).

They have every reason not to tour (family etc.), but Hook seems committed to touring. They don't have many years left in them for touring so my guess is that will do another tour if they have a new album out in the next couple of years.

I wouldn't bet on any tours in the States after that. Which means I'll have to start saving money for a trip to England in the future.

They may enjoy themselves for the 90 minutes they're on stage, but you have to account for the 22 1/2 hours in the rest of the day. If they could lead their "normal" lives and then just magically appear on stage for that hour and a half before being teleported back, we'd get a lot more shows.

Even as a lowly no-name DJ I sometimes contemplate not doing it anymore...The time and effort it takes to put something together along with the want for it to sound perfect time and time again is greuling.

I think when you see how happy the fans are when you're in front of them it's really all worth it...but I can relate to not wanting to do it all the time.

The fans just show up and enjoy the show but don't see all the behind the scenes sheeet.

With that said I truly hope they come back and maybe next time I'll be lucky to DJ with the Hook.
