Dragonettes....

Its been a couple of days since the show at Hammerstein, but something has been bothering me. I guess it didnt bother me AT the show because I was about to see NEW ORDER (front row center!!!) and I didnt mind afterwards cuz I was still pumped and wired from the concert.

But on my plane ride home to Hawaii (yes I flew from Hawaii to see NO and would do it again!!!), i realized that the dragonettes totally sucked big time!!!! The only thing that saved them was that the lead singer was pretty hot and of course the key-tar!!! How did this half ass band end up opening new order? shit ana matronic was there! It wouldve totally rocked it Ana and her "sisters" played a set before the boys!!!

what are your thoughts?

You weren't "Wowed" by there stylish, ironic, blandness.

I would rather drink 8 dollar gin and tonics at a TGIFridays. Oh wait, I was doing that. Unfortunately, I came into there set for the last 1 1/2 songs.

I dunno guys, i didnt think they were that awful, everyone had their adrenaline going to see New Order, and who could blame them, so of course people were disappointed with the Dragonettes. Hoewver, that lead singer, could seriously use a stair master, cuz up close, her legs were not the most toned, but thats neither here nor there, i didnt think they were that bad, i just think that they were written off cuz everyone was just eager to see Sumner and co. They were also really nervous, the blonde girl that was doing back up vocals and dancing, was almost shaking, so if you just factor in everything together, im gonna cut them some slack, id hear some more of their stuff.

all i remebered was the "Keytar" i saw it from the doorway then just stayed in the back and didnt see them at all. they were really bad

Sure they are. Looks like before the Hammerstein show they often did gigs at football games and car washes.

Somebody in management must have screwed up, because I would much have preffered this ensemble.

the funniest part to me is i bet most folks dissing dragonettes are also the folks who spent 2 hours waiting in line to get in early to SEE the opening band....

i had a much better time at tgif pounding long islands....

and on a serious note, human ears can only take so much sonic assault... it is best to save your hearing for the headliner... and, hey, i've been in the opening band for far too many gigs, but i never was bummed if folks only caught our last song... it is understandable.

and WHEN has an opening band EVER been good? surely not Gene Loves Gezebel in 89 or whatever...

word of advice: miss the opening act, and don't wait in line with all the other zombies....

we stood in line early for hours to see New Order, not the opening band... how else are you suppose to get to the front row??

It's funny, because the lead singer said that "dragonettes.com" was their website!

The band's name is actually Dragonette. I don't much about them, but I had originally posted on these boards because I wanted someone to take pictures of them. As I mentioned in the Hammerstein post, the backup singer and drummer are also in a band called Flux a.d. and that was the reason why I wanted pictures taken. But I am also a fan of New Order, so I figured I might as well sign up.

Probably the reason why Julie was shaking was because I don't think she has performed in from of that big of a crowd. I know I have never seen her own band perform in front of more than a few hundred people. Although she did perform with Sarah Harmer through the US and Canada, which I imagine would have been at least in front of a few thousand most of the time.

Anyways, I don't want Dragonette sounds like, so I won't defend them. But I would like people to tell me what they think of Julie's band, Flux a.d. I run a fan site and they have their own official site. One of their influences is New Order. They sound nothing like The Killers if you are worried about that. But just tell me what you think, whether you hate them, love them, think they are ok, or even if the only good thing you can say about them is that they are better than Dragonette:

Sorry for this promotion of the band, but since there is so much negativity about Dragonette, I figured I'd mention something that some of their members are involved in that you might actually like.

Open letter to the slaggers:

I realize that opening for New Order is a huge deal and you would expect anyone who did to have there chops down pat. But in Dragonette's defence I must expose the overwhelming odds they had to overcome just to play that night.

1. A 13 hour drive from Toronto w/ gear.

2. A ten minute sound check. Which is basically no sound check at all...

3. All there carefully chosen outboard gear (compressors, limiters, etc.) was disconnected by one of the sound guys. Hence a slushy, slurry sound mix.

4. A huge crowd who wanted nothing to do with them.

I've seen the band in a smaller venue here in Toronto and they were great. Dan Kurtz, the bass player, was one of the founders of The New Deal (P2P, worth the effort) and Simon Craig, the guitar player, is a most excellent and renowned session guy.

The Scissor Sisters manager also manages Dragonette, so you know they have to have something going for them...

Seems like we have a dragonette p.r. at work. As my friend said at the show "they would be good if the girl didnt sing". Who cares if they have the same manager as the scissors sister?
