What's the deal with the song "Love Juice"?
I've been a New Order fan for the past decade, and I just heard this song for the first time last night.
I love the melody and the lyrics. It's off the hook.
Does any one have any information about it? For instance, is it original to New Order?
I checked the song browser here, and honestly I have to say its not there, and I have not heard of this song either as a NO song or of any of the side-projects.
It was an impromptu encore jam at Auckland in 1985. Never played before or since. Far too much fuss has been made about it over the years, especially when you consider how many times they have done some kind of encore jam with the support band (Reading Uni 81, Kilburn 82, Malvern 86, quite a few JD shows). The title (given to it only by bootleggers) stems from one of Bernard's typically potty-mouthed couplets "Love Juice....smells like stale fish". I guess it has only had some popularity because of the high quality sound recording we have.
If anything, it was a precursor to their take on Lou Reed's primitive (haha!) "Do The Ostrich" with which they closed out a few shows from late 86 through 87.
There is at least one show (Sydney 13/2/87) where Bernard announces they will be making a song up on stage. 30 seconds into a typical sounding jam, they give up and start doing Sister Ray instead!

Love Juice is tight. It's incredible New Order never recorded it in studio.
I guess we're spoiled in that most NO songs are available via albums and singles, as some bands have many songs only found in bootlegs.
This and maybe one or two others, are the only such NO songs. But, again, Love Juice is an exceptional song. Ever since I discovered it, I've been listening to it repeatedly, and I still can't get over the melody and lyrics. It's so simple and yet so catchy. Almost reminds me of Lonesome Tonight: with the guitars and lyrics. But, they performed it while in it's infant stages, and hadn't yet come up with backing keyboards.
I played it for my friend on the way the bar tonight, and he actually liked it. This is the same guy who last month said WFTSC was okay, but nothing special. Oh well. Love Juice is ancient history now, 20 years old. At least the bootleg is of relatively high quality, and I can enjoy it's novelty.
By the way, it's available in the audio/video portion of NOOL.COM (above), stored with other "Live" recordings.
