Got to ask you lot this...the origin of "the Vikings"? I was only thinking the other day about The Festival of The Tenth Summer at GMEX 1985(?). Remember losing my watch while the Order were on,hearing it shatter to a million pieces in my mind's ear. At the end of the gig while I'm sifting through the shite on the floor,on comes...The theme to "The Vikings". Did this start it all off,was this what they were finish all their gigs off with at that time?
It was just in reference, as you said, to the track itself. It was supposedly Barney and Hooky's favourite film of the time (I think I read?). With reference to fans being Vikings it was basically started by Roger Lyons, who misinterpreted a pin badge thinking 'we' were Vikings. I'd used a Borromean triangle (supposedly popular with Vikings) then qualified it with the phrase 'The Vikings' underneath, to avoid explanation of the symbol. And then he mentioned in Sound on Sound that the New Order 'ardcore were Vikings. And so they were born.
U have to admit, it's a cool name :D
All the right connotations.
FWIW,Barney once called Hooky "a half breed viking twat" in NME or Melody maker or something.
