I've got the Lonely Planet guide at home.
Was going to start a thread about hotels in the next couple of days.
The one that's been suggested for BH is about the most expensive hotel in the country and is about 20km out of town ![]()
aim for hotels around the southern area of Copacabana beach. Walking distance to the posh bit behind Ipanema.
Unless you can afford stay around Ipanema that is!
The Youth Hostel in Copacabana is very well located and (I supose) has a reasonable price. I wish I could help more but I really don't know any hotels in my own city
I plan to get a room at the Guanabara Palace in central Rio. It's really close to the venue as well as to the bus station, and closer to the airports than Copacabana. An cheaper than most of the Copacabana hotels for what you get.
I can just commute to Copacabana on my sightseeing days.
I'm having more trouble figuring out where to stay in Sao Paulo. It's a huge spread out city and I'm still not sure where the best area to stay would be. Ideally I'd like to be close to the venue but I'm not even sure of where in the city that is, or if the metro goes there.
Liberdade looks to be a good area of Sao Paulo to stay, but I've got no idea of where it is in relation to the gig venue.

"Liberdade" is the Japanese neighbourhood of Sao Paulo. The district of Via Funchal is called "Vila Olimpia", you should look for places in this area.

Liberdade is to Sao Paulo what Soho is to London. Not bad, but there are better places to stay.
I usually recommend to stay near Avenida Paulista in Sao Paulo. It's the main avenue of the city, there are lots of restaurants and bars, the subway (underground for the Engerlish) runs the entire street with several stations and it's a central place, with easy access to anywhere.
Alternatively, you can stay near to the venue, which is located in Vila Olimpia neighborhood, another cool place in the city.
Guanabara is a very nice and traditional hotel - it is near my office - but there is nothing around to do, people do not live in downtown, only work. But if it's only a place to sleep you want, it can be an option.
If you want my opinion, do not stay in Copacabana or Ipanema, unless you can afford it. The subway goes to Copacabana (and Ipanema is next to it) in 15 minutes, so if you're downtown or in a place like Botafogo (where I live) you can easily move around by bus or subway (the latter better to avoid traffic).
Wanna try something cheap and different? Take a look at this:

I agree about Copacabana and Ipanema. If it's so important to say at these famous places at least you can avoid Avenue Atlantica and Avenue Vieira Souto (the main streets of Copa and Ipanema) which will cost you soooo much.
You can get nice places with reasonable prices if you stay 2 or 3 blocks away from the beach (and you will still be a few steps from the sea) ![]()
