Newcastle refreshments

Bearing in mind it's just after freshers week we may be best staying out of the way of the university, so may I make the first suggestion;

The Newcastle Arms

Location: 57 St Andrews Street, close to Chinatown and a good meeting place for dining out or before a football match. Metro - St James Click for map

Review:

Medium sized traditional old Newcastle pub with a long bar and a wooden floor. There is plenty of seating available with mainly wooden tables and chairs in the main bar and two small lounge seating areas towards the rear of the pub. There is also some high tables and chairs.

The decor is a mixture of sea green and orange colours. There is a huge fireplace to the centre of the bar with a large mirror above it. Old pictures of Newcastle adorn the walls.

There is a cosy atmosphere at most times due to the subdued lighting throughout. The pub gets busy at weekends but is quieter during the week. A large drop down screen is located in one corner of the bar with all live football and six nations rugby shown. Regular music is on play at most times. A juke box is located opposite to the bar. Several games machines are dotted about. The pub is very popular with locals and the football crowd as it is near to St James park.

Disabled access is very good as the bar is all on the one level. Toilets to the rear of pub are small and clean.

Price: Moderate.

How about the Forth, just round the corner from the venue, doesnt get to busy....generally...crackin beer, and crackin home made burgers!

Newcastle Arms - Beers: Camra Real Ale Pub with several excellent cask conditioned ales on tap including Black Sheep, Fullers London Pride, Batemans and regular guest ales.

Always a bit choosy 'cause beer in the 'toon is shite.

Shug, mate. I know the ticket is only a small part of the cost of a NO night out but if it helps, you can have my Newcastle spare for nowt. It's a balcony ticket, but I'm sure we can smuggle you down the front once your in.

Hopefully arriving in Newcastle 5ish, tea at a friends, pint in the Free Trade and then into town.

Unfortunately travelling back after the gig but if anyone is stopping over it may be nurses night at the Stage Door.

Muchos Gracias fer the offer amigo, but Newcastle is not a possibility cos I only have 5 days holidays till next April - if I can do Bournemouth that will need another couple of days off work and I will need the remaining holidays to take Mrs Shug somewhere for a nice long weekend break. (which I have been told is not to involve anything Celtic or Neworder )

Well all the Darlo order (14 at moment!) are taking the pm off work to start drinking at 1. Got a bus booked up there & Im getting a 'bad back' at school that day because there's no way im missing a full sesh pm pish up when N/order's playing such a close & intimate gaff. Nearly 20 years to the day since the last Mayfair 'do' :)

Seriously, I reckon the Forth. Nice pub around the corner from the academy (and just down the street from the central station). You've also got Raffertys right next to it which is very reasonable price wise.

I've got the day off work so we'll probably be out quite early an'all

Forth sounds good. Me and my mate Colin arrive about 16.30 on the Edinburgh train.

Any recommendations for cheap, central accomodation? If it was the missus coming with me, I'd have to splash out, but given it's the mate, the cheaper the better

Right, theres too many threads for this gig. I think bar the one about Hooky djing afterwards they can get moderated i.e. binned. (Hello Shuglet/Tim) Seeing as JT started this and like moi has good knowledge of boozers, i must agree with his choice of pub, especially as footy is on. The 'Newcastle Arms' (see map earlier) is much more acceptable to a big crowd than the Forth & Raffetys. So we'll be there

Wish I could be there earlier,and do the Hooky dj set, but no chance due to work etc. 7 of us going from Darlo, I'll be at the front wearing a Stranglers t-shirt The boys at the front,girls at the back !!:)

Me, JG, Wolfram, Don and Si Sweeney all touchdown at l'aerporto for 5pm.

Drop our bags in l'hotel oppostite said l'aerporto.

Then hop on Metro into town. Sorry, toon.

Likewise, same flight/hotel - just checked in both Wednesday and Thursday's flights, so that should ease things considerably tomorrow afternoon/Thursday morning!

OK, Centurion bar which is in Central Station has an asbolutely massive screen and is definately football friendly.

The Forth will probably have them on small TV screens (not really ideal TBH)

Yep me and a few mates will be in the forth about 630 for a fishfinger sandwich and a pint

^ Forth's definatly not place to watch the match. Raffs has a few smallers screens but isn't big.

Tillys is my general pre-academy venue tad pricey but good music.

I'll probs be in the forth beforehand waiting for my mate who forgot the gig was tonight and has to get back from manchester.
