Rough order of events....
Friday:
Meet up with Al and Bonzette for drinks in North London. Al and I contribute 4 mins to a 3 hour conversation. Stop at Al's gaff.
Saturday:
Arrive at airport 3 hours before flight. Check-in girl faints. Get to departures, see Graham Coxon wearing exactly the same gear he had on at Clapham Common last Sunday. Also see a lad who, about a year ago, bought my £12 Ladytron ticket for £92, on ebay. Decide to avoid. Catch delayed flight to Dublin. Collect hire car. Arrive at hotel. Can't work out out how to switch on TV. Realise I'm out of practice.
Steve drives me, Al and Dave Legge to Festival. Am the only person in the car with any CDs so make them listen to a selection of twee indie Swedish bands.
Have 20 minute conversation with Steve and Dave about Lawrence from Felt/Denim. Al pretends to look interested. Establish that the band name 'Suede' wasn't inspired by 'Felt' or 'Denim' as Denim came along after Suede and Felt weren't much cop anyway.
Stop at only Cash Point we see in the 1 hour drive from Dublin to the Festival. Dave and myself have precisely 0 Euros between us. Cash point refuses to accept either Dave's or my bank cards. Now in even more debt to Al.
ATR phones Al from the VIP bar, to request that we buy cans of cider for him. We don't.
Collect our passes and find a bar near the main stage. Al drinks small bottles of wine like they are pop. Al
says "I've had 4 of these and I don't feel any different". Buys two more small bottles of wine.
Al presents Gordie with an inflatable skeleton, called 'Ian' to give to ATR who's still in the VIP bar. Liam gives a passable impression of what he would be like with a blow up doll. Occasionally, people stop and ask
about the skeleton. Liam reponds by kissing the skeleton. Using his tongue.
Bloc Party play and then ask everyone to enjoy 'Snooze Order'. Make mental note to smack Kele O, the public school twat if I see him at Dublin airport tomorrow. Move to the front and meet up with Angel *swoon*, CuanaD, Snoopy, Gerard and the two Motherwell lads - both totally cnuted. Liam is wearing a silly purple ladies hat. Some lad takes it off his head during the gig, then won't let him have hit back, for about 30 seconds. Liam looks like he's about to start crying. Lad gives him the hat back. Liam stands there with 1 hand on his head, clamping the hat in place for rest of the gig. Liam denounces the crowd as "crap".
Al now careering round the crowd. Out of control. Stumbling into people and shoving anyone within arms reach.
Try to speak with Andy Liddle after the gig but Al interrupts every 3 seconds after Andy starts talking. Give up trying to persaude Al and Dave to return to the car. Wolfram and me spend AGES walking thru fields of campervans and parked cars. Eventually find our car and
spend next 20 mins driving around fields in the middle of rural Ireland looking for two drunk lads from Luton. Fail.
Around this time, Al sends suggestive text message to Angel. Dave phones to advise that CuanaD is giving them a lift back as they haven't a clue where the car is. Steve gets us back to the hotel in quick time.
Its now gone 1am. Hotel bar is shut. But can order drinks and sarnies in the lobby. Which we do. CuanaD safely deposits Dave and Al in the hotel lobby as we're waiting for the pints of Guiness they ordered by text. They are wasted. A Wedding reception is drawing to a close. About 20 guests are hanging around, with their 600 children. Al finds a plate of food in the lobby which someone has left. We demolish a tray of sarnies and sausages. Say goodnight to CuanaD and order another round of drinks. Woman comes over and asks us if anyone has seen the last tray of food from the Wedding buffet. We look as innocent as you can do with bread crumbs down your shirt and ketchup on your chin. Dave talks us out of a kicking. Woman invites us into the residents bar for a drink. We slope off to bed before it gets nasty.
Sunday:
Steve and Dave miss brekky cos instructions in the hotel room are wrong. Al and I discuss our breakfast for 10 minutes. Around this time, Al sends an apologetic text message to Angel. Angel wishes Al a hangover. She needn't have worried. Return car to car hire. Arrive at check-in before it's open. Check-in girl faints. See Pat Jennings in departures with exactly the same haircut he had in 1978. Al tells poor Pat Jennings joke (not to Pat Jennings). Realise I've lost my prescription sunnies.
Somewhere in the middle of all that NO play a gig.
