COS WE JUST LUUUVE TECHNIQUE. THE RANT STARTS HERE

It seems that every NOOLER comes up with their own perfect set list, well I’m gonna keep it simple and simply remind NO of one album that needs addressing. NOW!

So many people seem to agree that TECHNIQUE was NO’s best studio album. Absolutely no need to hit that skip button. So what do NO do? Since 1998 they hit the skip button on the entire fucking masterpiece. WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now Brixton last year was a damn good gig. Not really a duff tune there but still, come the end of the gig, something was missing. Back in 2001 at the same venue they weren’t even as good as that, force feeding us “Ruined…” and 60mph. Urgh!

Well this year, NO you’re gonna try and sell out Wembley Arena are you? Best of fucking luck! Me and a couple of friends (and apparently some NOOLERs) paid our £40 including fees but it doesn’t seem that too many other people have. Why would they? What’s new since last time?

Tix for Brixton last year only barely sold out. People were buying spares on e-bay for pocket change. What makes you think you can sell out Wembley unless you give us something extra???

And tix are selling slow, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many adverts in the press (ooh look Maximo Park supporting! Last year’s news. Zzzz). There wouldn’t be ad’s all over XFM either (the same old standards used to entice us: True Faith, Regret, BM). Wanna pull in some of your old fans beyond the NOOLERs? Give us some goddam Technique!

Hooky said in the Greek interview that most people who go to their gigs probably listen to a compilation like Singles. Really? Well good news Hooky ! There’s THREE Technique tracks on the Singles comp. So lets hear ‘em!

What’s that Hooky? You’d have to practice them? Well get going then you lazy bastards. You’ve got a month. That should be enough time to figure out how to play songs that YOU wrote, YOU recorded and YOU played live at some point in history.

Whats more I’m not convinced that NO fans are that casual. I don’t believe they don’t listen to Technique, and I don’t believe they wouldn’t LOVE to hear some of it (most of it!) at the gigs this October. COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just want EGG back on the setlist. Technique is not even on my Top 5 New Order so I'm not really bothered. Run would be good tho cause it's a cracking tune

Can't understand all this need to write ten million words of passionate plea to play something off Technique - why? Anyone would think it's the best thing since sliced bread! Wouldn't mind Dream Attack or Vanishing Point, but there's at least a dozen songs from other albums I'd rather have before them.

There's always BOURNEMOUTH.! Like everything that's been said before on the forum,it's the old chestnut of programming the equipment,which might have been Gillian's forte. To give them their due,at least they tried out PERFECT KISS,so it does look promising.

I watched the big world cafe footage again recently and thought that the songs didn't really work very well in concert. live stuff never translates fully through the medium of tv but there was something lacklustre about the tracks. partly it's a vocal thing - bernard's voice just doesn't seem to carry as well over those quite delicate melodies. I get the sense that if bernard's not happy singing something then it's 'dead in the water' - maybe that's the case here. or maybe I'm projecting...

Well, you'll have to ask Mr Lyons. Since, sans Gillian, they are stage mimers, only Mr Lyons can say if we can hear Technique tunes or not, I rather suspect not though.

Then again, Dream Attack, Run, etc can all be done without requiring a talented machine tamer (so Phil should do OK).

They also did confusion in 98, but we wont get that cos it's too hard for poor phillykins to play, bless.

With Gillian still in the band.....and that's 8 years ago now Ron! "Ready to go" is pushing it, even by New Order's standards!

Bottom line seems to be that if Bernard's not comfortable singing it (i.e it's in D and doesn't sound right with a key change), it ain't gonna happen. Given that Roger Lyons samples the records or old live versions rather than programming them through MIDI or something, it ain't the fact that they use different technology these days that's the problem.

Dunno about anyone else, but I would rather hear the half squawk/half growl that used to be the vocals any day, compared to the incessant introductions, quips and "safe" vocals. I was listening to some old material on the train to/from Glasgow, whole gigs including encores without a single word to the audience, no hellos or goodbyes, no thanks for applause, pure attitude. Quality.

True, but they are not deeply technical and as tightly bound up with the sound which plays each part as for instance Round and Round.

I have to agree with Jarvo and the others...

I love Technique a lot, I agree it is their best studio album, but it doesn't bother me that they don't play any of it live, b/c I don't think it would go over well live. Delicate vocals over delicate melodies are just not going to get across live.

I would love to hear EGG though. And Ceremony!!! Now there's a track that kicks f***ing ass live, although you wouldn't know it from the Substance version. I am happy that it is back in the setlist, and it better stay in the setlist when I get my butt over the pond in October.

Love EGG, but that version they played earlier this year......EEEK!

Agreed, I gave the live version a quick listen, it didn't sound that great, but it could have been the quality of the recording, I wonder how it was live?? I seem to recall that the people present said it was good.

The version of EGG on the new Singles CD rocks, I think it is different than the Substance version. Same goes for Ceremony of course, I really like the version from Singles, seems to capture some of the energy and urgency of the live version.

The one on singles is just a razorblade job on the 12" version as far as I know. Other sonic variations in it can be accounted for by it being passed through the modern mastering mangle, compressing the living crap out of it.
