He's always asking people to call him Sarah.

"More than two decades have passed since New Order played anywhere in the UK quite as provincial as Bournemouth. In that time they've influenced all the young prtenders, from dance (Chemical Brothers) to rock (The Killers, Interpol), but tonight it's their old guard who've turned out in force to catch them live for the first date of their UK tour. Everyone knows everyone else in New Order circles. Mobs of lads in razored haircuts eye one another suspiciously before hugging like long lost brothers, as forgotten faces are recognised. These are the Vikings, New Order's self-styled hardcore, who follow the band all over the world. There's a surge through the venue as New Order stroll out to their (possibly ironic?) introductory music, Ennio Morricone's "For A Few Dollars More". Fists fly as grown men pogo through the opener, "Crystal". Barney reads his words from autocue, but it doesn't matter, as the entire room sings his lyrics for him anyway. Hooky prowls the stage throwing rock-god poses, weilding his bass like a cudgel and admiring his Viking army. New Order have their formula off to a tee nowadays. Rock out early on with the shorter, more aggressive, guitar-heavy numbers to keep the Vikings happy. "Regret", "Ceremony" and "Transmission" were among the examples in Bournemouth. Then drop the pace dramatically mid-set to give everyone a breather (tonight's slow song is the magnificent "KW1"). Then knock out all the longer, more dance-oriented tracks late on and get the most casual of punters swaying. Give them "Temptation". Give them "Blue Monday"... New Order do deliver surprises, however. "Who's Joe" gets its live debut and "These Days" is aired for the first time sans Ian Curtis. Both get the Vikings' seal of approval. And, of course, this being New Order, we get the mistakes as well. "Perfect Kiss", which on a good day sounds like a 100-piece orchestra on stage, bristling with ideas and emotions, just stays overblown and unruly tonight, bouncing around the venue, hindered further by the apparent breakdown of Phil Cunningham's keyboards partway through. The encore is all Joy Division. A slovenly "Shadowplay" giving way to the relentless singalong anthem of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" to close proceedings. New Order's Viking hoards slowly diffuse outside. They'll regroup two days later in Newcastle, to relive the entire spectacle all over again."

Not me, but "Sarah" has definitely got the queer dynamic down to a tee. Even those scary Chelsea lads were sweatily hugging me in Bournemouth.

Perhaps it's one of them wot done it?
