BBC Radio 1 studios 1984 question

I know this has been tackled before and I apologise for going over old ground but I dont know where on past posts I should find info on this.

I enjoyed watching NO on youtube playing Sooner Than You Think, Temptation and Age of Consent. (Although the fashion of the times are....erm....shall I say interesting).

Barney seems to be in a particular foul mood. Giving evils to everyone, pulling the muff of his microphone and even chucking his headphones on the floor. He's struggling with his guitar a fair bit too and only seems to get into it during Temptation (after headphone incident).

Would anyone care to elaborate on this for me please? I seem to remember something about them being stuck in traffic on way to studio and it was a hot day (so that might be why Barneys having a bad day) but the other members seem to cope with it. Maybe he wasnt happy about having to do the show or his headphones were making his head itchy? Were any interviews done for the show too?

Sorry again if this has been posted a thousand times already.

Not to mention the fact he was speeding off his tits! Bad road trip there, bad trip during, not his day.

To be fair, Bernard is a bit of a perfectionist with the sound side of things, and he does tend to get his knickers in a twist when things go wrong. They'd planned to showcase all the new material (at the time this was TPK, STYT, Face Up and Sunrise) but there were various problems so they had to change the set at short notice. Having Steve in a different room didn't help matters either.

Combine that with some dodgy smarties and it's easy to see why he wasn't a rabbit of contentment!

No there wasn't an interview as well. It would probably have been short and rude.

They were fantastic the next night at Portsmouth.

They were on tour at the time and opted to stay an extra night in St Austell which meant they travelled on the day of transmission. Being a Bank Holiday weekend - they got delayed and arrived at the studio late and only had 20 minutes to set up. As Tim mentioned, half the equipment had decided to pack up and there was no time to fix it hence the late set change.

There was an article in either NME or Sounds at the time where Barney said that they had never played using headphones instead of monitors before and they were all struggling to hear themselves properly.

must have realy cheered em up when they had to play for another 30 seconds for the radio when they had finished the t.v. broadcast.

Was that the infamous "Speed it up a bit Steve.....it's a bit faster than this" gig. Watched it on telly and recorded it on cassette,still got it somewhere.

The article was in Sounds .Remember being gutted upon finding out they had planned to do a set of all new songs but couldn't.I hadn't heard any of the new stuff at that time .Must have listened again to the one new song they DID do ,Sooner Than You Think, about 10,000 times between August 84 and May 85 when Low Life finally came out.Wasn't aware of bootleg gig tapes at that young age somehow
