The roughest place you have been to for a New Order gig?

Shugs comments about insults and moving north got me thinking. The roughest place seeing New order for me has to be the pub next to the Barrowlands in the east end of Glasgow. They refused to serve us and we had to get a scot (a very quiet rangers fan at that) to get the beers. The barman shouted out 'Youre not in fucking edinburgh now fuck Off' The whole place was green and white with murals of Bobby Sands on the wall. Turned out to be a crackin gig I recall being hugged in a headlock basically by tearful real hard nut who was crying when they played a JD nunmber.'I neva thought i would see them again pal' he had nasty knife cuts all over his cheeks. When we came out we had to march back to the safer side of town past some really pissed Rab C types as the buses and taxis wouldn't go there after dark and we saw massive rats in the rain.

Any other ideas from the vikings

I know the pub you are talking about, it makes the bar in the film Star Wars look normal. Happy to say I have never been in, and never will. Finsbury park in London was the roughest place I have seen New Order - not the nicest of places!

Belo Horzonte was rougher. They wouldn't leave our tickets on the door cos they couldn't work out which local militia were controlling the event. They had to be delivered to our hotel before the gig. The concert took place in Cruzeiro's ground.

Yep 118 gigs & Belo Horizonte. It was scary just standing in the grandstand watching the support band (Brazils answer to UB40 !) When New Order got goin it was fine down the front, but scary again on the wayout!

I was in there once with a well known scottish fan & all the local shoplifters were coming in & robbing to order! My mate bought a manics cd still with the tower records tag attatched! The barman promptly knocked it off for him with a hammer he kept behind the bar! I asked my mate if he knew the barmen, no was the reply! It was like something out of trainspotting! Its called Bairds bar, John & Christine met a woman who used to work there on holiday last year, she had to get out!

Mind you the unliscenced one over the road is known locally as the stab in!

Bairds Bar. Not for the faint hearted (or the English or the Proddies).

Bradford was pretty scary..( 86 I think )

On the flip side Malvern was so nice..the locals were sort of bemused by the invasion but were very friendly

In terms of venue proximity to areas you wouldn't necessarily want to be, Barrowlands probably wins, by a short head over Gloucester and Brixton, but pre-gig pubs I'd say Sunderland. Can't remember the name of the place but I have no intention of ever setting foot there again!!

i was threatened by some surly french types after the paris zenith gig escorted a lady out to get some cigarettes or something, forget now, & they came up demanding money, i pretended not to understand them for what seemed like five minutes or so til they gave up & left.

Did you lot get lost on the way to gigs? You get out of Brixton tube, turn right and it's 100 yards down the road. Brixton's got a bad rep but you have to actually wander off-road before you get into the proper nasty areas. The main drag ain't scary at all. And you find much worse pubs in any suburban town. You get a good welcome in the pubs in Brixton, they're not moody at all.

Don't get the Finsbree Park thing neither. Really, I don't. I lived round there for years and just don't see it. Not the 'nicest' place in the world admittedly, but hardly rough. Somewhere like the Apollo in Manc or any of the Liverpool gigs have been in much rougher areas. Least, I think they have.

Just curious, which area is, in ur opinion, the worst or one off the worst ones in London?

South London. All of it.

I was seeing/shagging this girl who lived in Kilburn, ended up @ here place a few times, quite drunk @ night.

Although not south-london that area wasn't nice to hang out @ night time but by daytime it was allright (besides the lack of sleep and hangovers)

seriously thou,hav 2 agree wiv Al,Barrowlands was scary,i had 2go straight 2gig with all my gear,even taxi driver warnd me bout the place,Bairds was an experiance,i'm sure the barman had tears tatooed down his cheeks & Belo Horizonte was moody 2,especially the taxi ride 2venue,down some scary back lanes etc........

South London rough? Some of it is. Generally the further east you go in London, the rougher it gets (says he who's from the leafy, pleasant and altogether quite dull south-west!).

I've seen NO twice in Toronto but they were a pretty decent crowd...they played at a concert hall within an amusement park...CNE.

liverpool olympia 2001. well scally location, pub round the corner was 60's-generic council estate token gesture to amenitites, "jockey " from shameless look-a-like.

That was errrrmmmmm.... interesting. Full scale riot afterwards in the city square, Bradford and Manc's versus Leeds. A mate got smacked on the back of the head with half-a-charlie. Those were the days.

Any UK New Order gig in the '80's [pre-ecstasy] had a certain 'atmosphere' about it didn't it? As they attracted a certain type of 'fan' [eg football hooligan]

That tent was really full of pissed up blokes, i can remember comments about the dogs being sent in as the stage was being crushed. do you remember that in the mid eighties you hardly ever saw any girls at the gigs or at least they were never near me anyway?

it wasnt till after true faith and global stardom that there was a better balance? or was it that I was just avin it at the front and they would have got crushed?

gig was at The Mayfair, Aug 84 - Sunderland wasn't very nice then, much better now

Bairds was fine too, the whole bar had an Indian takeaway after the gig

I remember seeing em at Tiffany's Sauchiehall street in 83 when they played Blue Monday twice (GITS).

Memory has faded but I was looking over my shoulder all the way back to the train station.

Doncaster Rotters in 85 - (a) cos it's Donny (b) it was Rotters and (c) many a UK New Order gig in the '80's [pre-ecstasy] had a certain 'atmosphere' about it as you said

I went to Manchester 2001 to see them at Apollo - never been to a rougher place than that....

Hacienda Low-Life Tour. They were dragging some lifeless people up at front of stage.No such luck with me,they couldn't fooking lift me,so I had to push my way out,then tripped up off that raised dancefloor bit,arse over tit.Sweating like a bastard,I necked 2 ciders in 5 minutes.Got some good piccies though...

its funny really blackburn's always mentioned for being a 'bad' night but i don't remember any trouble at all i just remember the gig & the quando quango gig/disco afterwards & taking the piss outta dear old tony & his harem & then going & pissing about in rex's studio & it was snowing...still gotta tape of that gig....hacienda 92 ? good vibe as always???? no trouble???
