just to confirm the gig is at the duchess in york which is a seperate venue to fibbers (which is still open and is actually near enough next door). Bit confusing as the duchess (a converted snooker hall) is ran by the guy that used to run fibbers and also the duchess in leeds (which is now closed).
anyway should be good :)

So the "Duchess of York" is now actually in York, as opposed to Leeds? Anyway, looking forward to reports from this gig!
Got my ticket last minute - haven't heard the album yet so going in a bit blind but should be good ![]()
Just rang the Venue and they said Freebass will hit the stage around 9.30pm - any chance of a JD or NO cover tonight do you reckon? ![]()
Well a good night at the Duchess, a cracking little venue! Here is the info I have on the gig with my limited knowledge!
The band lineup was: Hooky, Mani, Gary Briggs (singer), Drummer (is that Lead Foot?) + another guitarist.
No Andy Rourke, apparently stuck in New York which Hooky found quite funny as they were playing in York!
A nice t-shirt was for sale £20 - Freebass it's a beautiful life on the front with UK Tour dates on the back - a couple of people got these signed by Hooky and Mani. I was hoping they would be selling the CD but no....
Came on about 10pm and played for an hour - no encore. Played 11 tracks.
Gary was pretty good, a couple of tracks reminded me of Ian, the way he draped over the microphone.
Set List - Sorry haven't got the album so don't know the track names apart from some obvious ones, I'm sure someone will be able to complete.
1 - ????? 2 - Not too late 3 - The Only Ones Alone 4 - Lost Myself???? 5 - Standing???? 6 - I've Become??? 7 - World Won't Wait 8 - Secret & Lies 9 - Good Times / Need to Know???? 10 - See the light anymore???? 11 - She Said
In summary, well worth seeing, minor disappointment that there wasn't any JD or NO tracks i.e. BL style of gig, however this is a new band and not just Hooky's so fair enough. I will buy the album but still holding out for the CD!!!!
Good gig, I thought the singer gary has a really good voice live, hooky and mani's looked well into it. Not too much banter inbetween songs although someone shouted LWTUA to which hooky said Cant you read what it say on the f**king door or something to that effect. Shame no andy rourke though, could get them done under trade description act ;)
Hello plebs, us four saddos got down early (4pm) good pre-swill in the aft, bumped into Mani n Gary in that tacky Stone Roses bar earlier, very friendly.
Well i reckon no more than 200 there, but nice to see a couple of faces. Somehow ended up next to Alex by the speaker rig so had to insert the old tampon in the ear lark. Hooky played that red 6 string bass all night. He wears more finger jewellery than a pikey. Band were rather jovial n 'up for it'.
Played most of the album only louder n less jingly-jangly that than on mp3. Cannot remember that reggae tune but finished with Dark Star. Glad they didnt resort to covers. Still not bad for a £13 all in, fcuking train was more than that.
Suppose i'll go to Boro' on Sun as its free.![]()

er.....NO

the othe guitarist is Nat Wason, haven/strays, TOP guitarist![]()
Spose we'll find out more after folk get back from the 100 Club tonight but is the set list just the album only or do some of the EP tracks get an airing? I spotted "Dark Starr" in one of the comments above...
"You Don't Know This About Me" and "The Milky Way" are clearly - or at least in my opinion - the strongest Freebass tracks of the lot. Even with the absence of Burgess and Wylie on live vox I'd be surprised if they weren't included. Not too keen on "Dark Starr" meself... unless it was an instrumental jam without the Marks erm "stuff".
First time out (proper) gigging for Hooky in how long? Four years? Blimey.

bag o shite... Was a good night til we entered the venue. Was alright afterwards. Was good seeing 79 order.
It wasn't shite, but it wasn't particularly memorable either, but then I hadn't heard any of the songs before the show at the 100 Club the other night, its always going to be difficult playing totally new stuff to a crowd, particularly when the reason most people had paid money to see the show were bassists, not vocalists or guitarists. Don't know if I'd bother getting the CD of the album when its supposed to come out later in the year, but what I heard was certainly no worse than Bad Lieutenants own new stuff.
My main concern was Mani, he looked totally knackered two tunes in, I hope he's in a better state for the Screamadelica gigs at the end of the year...
Thanks to John, I've filled in some of the gaps on the set list:
1 - Plan B 2 - Not too late 3 - The Only Ones Alone 4 - Lady Violence 5 - Standing???? 6 - Kill Switch pt. 141 7 - World Won't Wait 8 - Secret & Lies 9 - Good Times / Need to Know???? 10 - The God Machine 11 - She Said
Just two tracks need completing - I presume one was Sister Surrender and the other? Anyone know anything about Sister Surrender?

As i've already said, they finished with Dark Starr (off of the EP)
