New Order Dublin June 3rd

Well who's coming over/going to this ? Me, I'll start the day in The Czech Inn early, if anyone's around. For anyone who's interested in F1, McLaren are bringing Jenson Button over for a bit of a drive through the streets of Dublin, most viewing places are free. I think it starts around 12 noon. Then you've got Dublin v Louth (4.30pm) if you want to see some Gaelic Football (Deffo not a sell out). Got a couple of friends over from Sweden for this one, they might want to head to festival early doors (about 3 or 4pm). Hope to see a few over the day.

Yes, but you have to find a cash machine first and I haven't.

We hope to arrive in Heuston at 11.15am. I only ordered my tickets on Sunday from Ticketmaster,if they don't arrive by tomorrow I will be getting nervous

Good stuff, looking forward to seeing you all. I'll be in the city centre from 1pm and as I said will head to The Czech Inn if anyone fancies a few scoops. It's located just off Parliament Street on the edge of Temple Bar, so there's plenty of pubs around. If you're meeting up somewhere else or need directions you can PM/email me or post here.

Tickets arrived , Czech Inn sounds like a good place with it's diverse range of beers unlike the venue itself where I am led to believe the choice is between Bulmers and Becks [eek2]

Have informed CuanaD (who has my ticket) of the piss up in the Czech Inn beforehand, as I think he wants to make a day of it. Should be there before 3 myself.

Looking forward to it myself Johnny, that's a nice early start ! You might just beat me to the pub ! Haven't met a few of you lot since Re-Order in Islington a few years back so lets make it a day/night to remember. (although there's a lot of that night that I don't remember)

The weather is disappointing but the forecast is that the rain will ease off tomorrow afternoon, seemingly wellies are the recommended choice of footwear this year.

I think the bulk from on here only got to bed about 6am so there won't be much talk for a while. I had to get up to move my car from the train station before its parking expired, otherwise I'd still be asleep!

No setlist suprises, Round & Round got an airing instead of 1963, I notice that Bernard is less reliant on the autocue these days which is to be welcomed.

Nice find. I dont blame them for making a few demands. When we are in our teens and early twenties we may be prepared to stay in a a youth hostel but as we get a little older we probably expect to stay in a hotel and enjoy some comforts. Once you are in your fifties and have sold a few records/tickets you shouldn't have to slum it. It's a fair amount of booze but if it gets shared amongst all the band and their crew then it ain't so bad.

Interesting venue. The stage was at the bottom of a small hill at the side of (what-looked-like) a stately home. 'Niche', you would call it - even 'boutique' wouldn't do this one justice as all the boutique festivals I've attended have been ten times the size of this one. The hill made for a natural ampitheatre; we could all see New Order as their minibus arrived and reversed to the side of the stage.

Thankfully the rain had abated for the gig, though it was still a quagmire near the front. Bizarrely, half the set was in relative daylight. Don't remember it getting genuinely dark till the dancier stuff near the end. The 'encore' wasn't an encore as such - they basically turned around, walked 10ft, then turned back again, running out of time apparently. Highlight for me was 'Round & Round', just nice to see it after so many 'Here to Stay's! (Why they haven't played both together in the same gig since Oz is beyond me!).

We went on the hunt for Andy Liddle at some boozer he said he'd be drinking in after the gig. He never showed! And then somehow ended up drinking in New Order's hotel till 5am, with a free bar courtesy of Facebook! Only Mr Cunningham lasted the distance with us.

I thougth it was pretty special aswell, I enjoyed the earlier part of the gig as much as the finale by which time I was needing a bathroom break, I should have done what Bernard does and gone during the intro to Blue Monday but I didn't want to lose my place at the barrier..

I saw that too from my position on Phils side of the stage, I think Gillians sister was with them also..

I was wondering what hotel they were staying in, I guessed it might be the Clarence but my girlfriend reckoned somewhere like the Westbury..

It seemed to me that Tom's bass was louder than the last time I saw them - not a bad thing in itself but if he gets too loud he might get in trouble with a certain person..

That's about the size of it - Phil, Andy R.(I think?) & Natalie(honest - that's who she was Al!) - all stayed the distance. I don't remember Steve being there at all, But Gillian & family (including sister - so you were right there Cranelane) were there a while & Bernard stayed until after Eimear gave that fascinating 'speach'.

Pre-drinks was a lot of fun - great to catch up with you guys again

Gig was a bit of a blur - spent most of it in front of 'Mini Mike' & was very impressed with the sound quality, normally it's too distorted so close to the stage. Probably was the best I've seen them play since . . . I dunno. I did miss The Elephant in the Room's posturings, but on the other hand, its great to have Gillian back - sound is so much fuller now & I've always felt the gigs in the last decade were lacking that without her.

Yep, best open air gig yet. But it wasn't a reason to wet yourself during the gig.

And then suddenly we were at the Saturday night headliners, where festival reputations are won and lost. On the main stage were chart colossi New Order,...

But back on the main stage, all eyes were on New Order. The band who launched a thousand electro dance tunes in 1983 with the release of Blue Monday got a rapturous reception when they took to the stage. This set took time to develop its energy though. Woolly sound took a while to shake off its shackles, but by then the hits were rolling and the fans were up in ecstatic arms. There are few ways to top unleashing an extended version of Blue Monday on a festival crowd, but sealing a set by drawing on Joy Division’s peerless Love Will Tear Us Apart is one sure way to cement your live reputation. Highlights aside, this set might have seemed a little underwhelming for those of us who don’t entirely subscribe to the new world order, but for the fans who have waited a long time for this gig to happen, it delivered all the right knockout electro pop blows.
