was reading the post bout the best new order related purchase & got reminded of this competition where you had to list your favourite tracks & why they were your favourites & then they would make it with an exclusive track.

does nayone know who won & what the exclusive track was???

That's a good question.....I can't recall there being anything about the winning entry...as we know SELECT magazine went thru a completely PANTS revamp about the same time as the Melody Maker and pretty soon nothing was ever heard from both mags again..... maybe it was all a ruse then?

Sorry to dig this one up out of the archives, but perhaps with some new people on the board there is an answer?

My vote for the 'mystery' track is the complete version of "The Happy One". Anyone?

Wasn't there also a "win Barney's guitar" compo circa 1988 in NME: the question was smething to do with the connection between the Order, Talking Heads and somebody else. Anyone kknow who won Bernard's very attractive black Les Paul, or quite why he let the thing go in the first place??

This was covered on the Ceremony mailing-list a long time ago. I believe the winner won because the reason why he wanted to see Temptation on there was because he was amazed that they didn't mention "blue eyes" (or something to that effect).

The speculation was that the exclusive track was the later-to-be-released, re-recorded Let's Go.

My claim of fame is that I submitted a list with only remixed versions, including a Jam & Spoon Trance Techno Remix of Blue Monday. And what happened to BM95 a couple of years later? And they gave me no credits...

What happened to Select Magazine? Did it go out of business? I used to buy that mag every month. I wanted to enter that new order competition with the free bonus track but couldn't because i live in Australia.

"Select" folded circa 2000-2001. It paid the price for (a) identifying itself too closely with "Britpop" and (b) watering down its earlier (and excellent) comprehensive- music-coverage-with-strong-indie-slant for a really crappy "lifestyle" approach. It was going downhill fast when it folded, as were its sales, but I still miss its early-90s incarnation where it was pissing all over the inkies in terms of breadth opf coverage and quality of writing: think "Q" with wit and intelligence, if such a thing is possible.....

It was a great mag, sad to see it go and go downhill. Does anyone know what happened to Vox magazine? Not as good as Select but it did have some good stuff in it. I believe the people responsible for NME published it.

I think Vox went 'cos the market was simply too crowded when it came out. The only music mag I look at these days is "Uncut", which used to be better but is still OK if you avoid the cover features, which are always dire and hopelessly sycophantic......

Vox went a few months before Select after effectively becoming the NME monthly when it used to be a decent magazine in its own right.

Good to see a few new mags on the block like Jack, X-Ray and Bang.

Do you have the january and february 2003 issues of Jack magazine? they have a two part interview with New Order which is hilarious, the guys just spend the whole interview slagging each other off. I love the memorabilia they brought with them, like Hooky's first bass and the melodica Ian Curtis used on "In A Lonely Place". New Order and Tony Wilson even gave Jack a fac number for the interview; FAC 413.

I do (or I did, the girlfriend may have it in Zagreb ) Must have a search around my house for it.
