my friend came to see me today(havent seen him for 6 years!) and reminded me the time we tried to get in the hacienda wearing suits! bear in mind we were only 17-18 at the time (in 88-89) and we got turned away of course, all the girls we were with got in and we had to go to some random bar/nightclub thing in manchester city centre(kicks bar i think). and wait for them until the hac closed! young and daft! we eventually got in a year after(we werent wearing suits though!) anyone else out there got any "strange hacienda tales"? steve smith,barnsleyfc.co.uk:D

What kind of suits were you wearing? I've always been partial to giant bunny suits, but they usually aren't admitted to clubs. Nowadays people would think you were from that Trigger Happy TV show, which is usually hi-larious (well, the first season anyway).

dear lord i got loads of hac stories as i went there for quite a few years. i was a member from almost the opening to about 89 i think (still got my members cards) and very proud to have a first birthday poster that i ripped of the wall. one of my favorite tales is that of meeting maddona. as you all know it was the factory all stars night on the tube,we was running late as usual and when we walked in she was prancing around on the dance floor doing "lucky star" if memory serves. at which point one of my m8s points at madge and shouts WHOS THAT FAT FUCKER,as she was a bit of a lardy arse back then at which point we shrugged our shoulders and wandered downstairs to the cocktail bar to get away from what we agreed was unlistenable. later on that eve,who should walk in and sit next to us,u guessed it lard arse. just goes to show how time can change people, cos she smoked like a chimney, drank like a fish, and looked like hilda ogden on a bad day. if only id had swallowed my pride and tapped her up eh!! oh the life i could have had :laugh::laugh:

When I saw Spiritualized at the Hac in summer 1997 (when it was suppossed to be closed for good??? Was this the venue's last 'gig', anyone????) we got chatting to the bass player and Jason Pierce's ex Kate Radley. My girlfriend at the time spotted her wedding ring and asked when she got married - she was very coy about it and buggered off soon afterwards. A few weeks later the tabloids broke the sory that she'd married big-honk Richard Ashcroft from (the) Verve.

Not very a very strange tale, mind. The old place looked like it could've done with a lick of paint, though.....

I once puked red vodka jelly from the balcony onto a crowd then quickly retreated. Also I used to go with my mate who used to sleep in the canteen bit because she wasn't really into it, we used to wake her up when we were going home!

Snap. Not at that gig, but my then girlfriend fainted at the Apollo in 98 from heat exhaustion, and she was right back near the mixing desk.

the standing area when watching gigs at the hac was so small..nobody checked or counted number of people...dangerous but sort of fun. hence when the order played at home think packed and then double it...on my visit i was in said standing area for first set, then after a couple of hours on a life support machine, when they re-opened for the late show i bolted up the stairs like shit off a shovel and got a prime location on the balcony...fantastic view overlooking the stage and very comfortable.

This just reinforces my point that you just can't take women to gigs. The whinge about anything and everything. 'Aggh, i'm gonna faint' 'Well, do it quietly, you're ruining the video'

Yeah, I think my ex thought I should feel sorry for her, or something. Met her at the end and she was like, "Oooh, I fainted!" and I was like, "Yeah, whatever. They played Ceremony! And Isolation! And Temptation!"

Not surprisingly, we're no longer together! ;)

Quite agree. Took my then girlfriend to OMD which she actually liked, so took her to Big Country at the Hammersmith Palais where she fainted. Was a bit of a rough gig, that one, but decided not to take her to NO, mainly coz she'd dumped me by then anyway...
