Which known JD studio recordings are not on Heart & Soul? I can think of this lot:
8 tracks from the 5/78 RCA sessions (Leaders of Men, Walked in Line, Failures, Novelty, No Love Lost, Transmission, Iceage, Warsaw)
2 tracks from the 7/79 Transmission session (Transmission, Novelty)
1 track from the 6/79 Picadilly radio session (Atrocity Exhibition)
But what else is there, I'm sure there are some completists out there who know!
There's mention of a June 1977 "demo" session that wasn't included because of poor quality (thus making me less than enthusiastic about hearing it) in the H&S booklet.

Okay, I have every Joy Division officially released recording (all but one on CD). I have a list online at http://www.morriso.btinternet.co.uk/JoyDivisionTracks.html that lists all these tracks, and on which release they can be found. Hope this is of some use to you!

Superb lists.....i have used these before ANDY.Do you own all the originals on the released formats or have you just downloaded MP3's.This is just for interest as i have quite a few of these but loads missing on the ORIGINAL released as i started only seriously collecting NEW ORDER only? Regards ROCKET MICK
very impressed with the list especially the note on the two differnt 12 inch versions of shes lost control i will also add the faded out version has a echo on the drum track that isnt on the other one
the rest of the genetic demos have finally surfaced after them thought as being lost im am yet to get a copy of them.. oh and personally i thought the entire amsterdam gig shouldve been included.

what shit the demos sound as bad as any other demo on the box set find them and love them

"Somewhere someone blew it" and I think it was Warsaw/Joy Division for coming up with songs like At a Later Date (even though it's sadly probably the best Warsaw song).

Ooh, sacrilege to acuse me of owning mere mp3 files! No, I don't download any commercially available music - just exchange the odd unreleased rarity in the case of New Order.
Been collecting New Order since 1988, and Joy Division only for a couple of years. Once you've got 'Heart And Soul' and 'Still', it's easy to track down most of the others. Collecting Joy Division was a pleasure compared to tracking down "Extended Edits" and suchlike released by New Order. God knows how I afford this all when I'm a student. Just thirty odd tracks to go now, and I'm not even sure if some of those exist!
Couldn't make do with crap sounding mp3s, more than anything because I love Peter Saville's artwork so much!

Yeah, but my list is of official releases, and as far as I'm aware these ain't been officially released yet? I don't collect bootlegs, as the quality varies so much.

Sorry if this has already been covered above, but...
the 1977 demo is available on a very useful semi-official CD (I bought mine in HMV!) called "Warsaw" released on Movie Play Gold (MPG74034) in 1994. It includes the whole of the 11 track aborted 1978 LP recorded at Arrow Studios, "As You Said" from the FAC28 flexi and the 1977 demo (Inside the Line/Gutz/At A Later Date/The Kill (not the same as the song of the same name on "Still"). It also includes a fifth song from that demo called "You're No Good For Me" which isn't mentioned in Mark Johnson's book as being part of the session. Anyone got any ideas where this came from?
The missing track from the Piccadilly radio sessions ("Atrocity Exhibition") and the unreleased versions of "Transmission" and "Novelty" from the first "Transmission" session which spawned "Dead souls" and "Something must break" are on another semi-official CD called "Digital Glass" (pur-leeeze!) on Punk Vault PVCD 1001.
As for the final Genetic tracks, "Digital" was allegedly not completed, but I have a CD including a different version of "Digital" from the Factory Sample one, which does not appear to have come from any of their other known sessions, so this mightbe the Genetic version. Anyone confirm that it was completed. As for the Genetic "Exercise One", the same CD has a track claiming to be that, but actually appears to be some kind of live recording (crowd noise is a bit of a giveaway!), so I don't really know if they have been sneaked out. Martin Rushent always swore he would never let them go to bootleggers, and the tracks on Heart & Soul appear to be the first anyone ever heard of the session (outside the band, obviously). Also, by way of train-spotterish interest, the Genetic "Transmission" appears on the 4CD Rough Trade story box-set (Mute) but is mistakenly credited as the normal Hannett version.
The only other tracks I an think of not released officially on CD are the extended (i.e. padded) 12" versions of LWTUS and Transmission from the original factory 12"-ers.

But the 12" versions are identical to the 7" ones!
Digital from the Genetic demo was completed so that's probably what you've got. I've never heard any crowd noise on the Exercise One that I've got but it does contain a very loud scream from Ian and it gets faded out a few seconds before the end - I guess if it is a live recording that's pretending to be in the studio then that might be to remove any crowd noise at the end.
Yes, you're right about the 12" versions now I think about it. Whoops! Bloody Factory cheapskates!
Oh, there's also a track called (unlikely title mind you) "Gimme Your Heart", which they performed live at Eric's in Liverpool. It's hardly worth losing sleep over though as it isn't likely to win any awards!
Are you suggesting the version of "Digital" from A Factory Sample has not been otherwise released on Substance or Heart & Soul?

As far as I know, they only recorded "Digital" twice, once for Genetic, produced by Martin Rushent (which may or may not have been completed - see above) and once for A Factory Sample.
The Factory Sample version has appeared officially on:
A live version appears on the second half of Still. Apart from that, I don't think it's been officially released, but someone else may know different. Anyone?
I vaguely remember a story Hooky told in one of the books where he said that Hannett had done some extra mixes of Digital and Glass, which Hooky had on an unmarked C90 tape. Some time later, a junior at the recording studio found a box of unmarked cassettes, which he sold as blanks for 50p each...

Good to hear ANDY.It seemed to me with a list as extensive as this then you must have the originals.I too love the artwork and although many of mine are ORIGINALS from the late 70s i have had to buy some AT A LATER DATE.How do you manage to get MINTY MINT condition sleeves these days.Hard work but they are some traders and collectors out there like me.But i would NEVER sell any item.Keep up the goog work and share your collecting knowledge here if you could.I am very interested in the ART OF COLLECTING.

I'd heard pretty much the same story except it was Hooky rather than some unfortunate junior that sold the tapes - it happened when he bought Cargo studios and found the aforementioned unmarked tape that contained several of Hannett's dub mixes of Digital. After forgetting what was on them he later sold the tapes (I too remember 50p being mentioned!).
Assuming this story is true and Hannett produced dub mixes of JD songs, does this mean it's possible that the 'alternative mixes' of New Dawn Fades and Candidate are authentic rather than cobbled together by an unscrupulous bootlegger?
"At A Later Date" should have been on "Heart And Soul", i know it's complete crap compared to their later stuff, but i do have a soft spot for it.

For the last time ever. "Gimme Your Heart" was the band jamming Section 25's "Dirty Disco" when the bass amp packed up. They also did a bit of Sister Ray in it as well. THIS WAS NOT A JOY DIVISION UNRELEASED SONG.
The Genetic Demo of Exercise One is most definitely a studio recording, and is unmistakeable. I would guess that those who think they have a copy that features live crowd sounds have been ripped off !
