In a Chemical Brothers interview in the latest Rolling Stone, Tom Rowlands is asked which remixes they've turned down - "We got asked to remix "Temptation" by New Order and we said no. That's too good as it is -- it doesn't need us". How perfect is Temptation? To me it just contains everything that I love about NO and it doesn't sound like anything/anyone else. Thank you God for Temptation. The End.
Temptation lives on

i think if anybody asks "who are NO? what do they do?" i´ll play Temptation without a doubt. i think is the perfect demo of the whole NO sound: danceable, hooky´s lines, barney´s typical lyrics and 9 minutes of just 2 chords! i wonder how many bands can keep the listener´s attention for 9 minutes as NO and with only 2 chords!!! every time i think about it i just think they´re
to do such a thing. but they succeeded! ![]()
i would love to hear the Chems do Temptation. The teaser on the American EP with Star Guitar was not enough for me. Temptation is perfect as it is (all versions are great imho) but a Chemical Brothers mix of Temptation would beat the hell out of the Joe T Vanelli mixes of 1963, the horrible mixes of EGG and pretty much any other remix of NewOrder.
The Chems already did a sort-of cover of "Temptation": it's called "Hey Boy, Hey Girl" and its basically a fusion of "T" and "EGG" with a technological boot up the arse.
Great tune, but we all know where they swiped it from.......

I think I understand what you're saying, but surely that accolade has to go to Blue Monday instead? Temptation cemented the 'New Order sound' they were already trying to achieve on EGG but you can't say it ever 'launched a career' for them.

But Wilson almost ruined their career ![]()
Totally agree about the substance version of Temptation being crap. I thought that the Chems 'Out of Control' was their homage to the song.
imho
The best version is on the Electronic Ecstacy boot
However i long to have been at the National Ukranian Hall to hear in person, the 1981 live version...
...just going to listen to that now just to tell...
a heaven a gateway a hope

The original 12" and 98 versions are awesome really ![]()
We've said this before, but the Substance version is structured exactly the same way as they play the song live (except Barney doesn't sing the 'chorus' twice, live).
So, everyone who slates the 87 version doesn't like the live version either - is that what you're saying?
And which one is the 'original' then? The 7" or the 12", both completely different animals.
I used to hate the song, for many years, as I didn't like any of the recorded formats until the 87 Substance version, and always got bored by it live as it was 7 minutes that could have been used by another song. Then I saw the light, midway through one of the 87 gigs. It still wouldn't get in my top ten.

Put both to play in hi-fi system the one which barks is the 12" ![]()

I have always been intrigued by this. Is the 7" cut from the same recording as the 12"? Both sound slightly different to me, (the tone of the sequencer notes etc) as if they were different recordings, though some say you can 'splice' one into the other.
Does anyone know the definitive answer?
(BTW, the 12" rules, and I don't generally like temptation live, other than the Taras version which paradoxically is one of my fave live performances).
My favourite "live" Temptation performances were during mid-1984 when for a few gigs they segued EGG into it.
Oh, and the 12" is the one I bought first back then, whenever it was, got it home and played it no less than 20 times on the bounce. My parents thought I was nuts.

But if you ask an American, they will say huh, and when you mention Blue Monday, they will say, "Oh that song by Orgy." That's the perfect situation to have alead pipe handy by your side to whack the guy's head until he learns.
Didn't we have a poll on the best version of Temptation?
Gee.. ![]()
Actually, New Order improved the song over the year, and the last edition (1998, found on the bonus disc of Retro) is, IMHO, the best version, as it's the live version they are currently playing.. it's a short version, but it's good also.
But it's funny the Chemical Bros refused that, I would have been curious to listen to this.. just to put a fresh techno sounds into Bernard's lyrics.. that would be interesting.
But it shows their integrity! You can't remix something alredy mixed perfectly...
If memory serves, the 7" was more readily available first, as there were pressing problems with the 12" up to a week's delay. However, the band would probably say that the 12" was the definitive version, as it has a 'proper' beginning, middle and end - rather than a 'fade out'...

The absolute best version of the song was from the 5-song concert they did on the BBC in 1984
(but the original 12 inch isn't too far off being the best)

Yep, that was a cracker too. And it was in 1984 (see my earlier post.....)!
I think the Substance version is just fine. I don't understand why so many of you hate it. The 12" and the 7" are great too, although I haven't heard the 7" in its entirety. The 98 version would be the best, but the 'bolts from up above' part is cut out and that's one of my favorite parts of the song.
What irks me most about the Substance ( and all live) version(s) is Barney switching down an octave when he sings the first and second "up down turn around! please don't let me hit the ground" lines - it doesn't sound very good at all - like he can't hold the high register so has to make an impromptu change. This NEVER happened on the original - which makes it all the more definitive. ![]()
I love all the version of this one...in my minds eye...I see the version from Retro being the opening song into the movie that I shall make one day...but I can't divulge any more right now...![]()
Eh, I kind of like the Substance 1987 version better, but probably because I heard it before the original. Then again, the original - especially the live version on Taras Shevchenko - kind of makes me cringe a bit. It just sounds too raw and unpolished for my tastes.

You never hear violence called for when correcting The Cure tunitation.

That's because, comparitively speaking, the Cure are totally irrelevant. :p

That's the smartest thing I've heard anyone say in ages on this forum.
