Get The Message.. ?

I'd be interested to see if anyone has any ideas on this.. I had a long drawn out argument which was ultimately never settled about the final lyrics to Elecronics's "Get The Message"

I used to get this NO fanzine circa TechniqueRepublic and they claimed the last line was.

"living on peanuts aint my scene, what a shame that word rhymes with mean"

Now i subscribed to this theory cause its typical of Barney. Where as my mate was convinced that it was

"living on appearance aint my scene, what a shame that word rhymes with me" We even slowed down the single and all sorts but never conclusivley proved it one way or the other!

Seen many variations on the web, and one on here.

Can anyone shed some light on this or have and definitive answers...?

ps: anyone remember seeing the DNA groove mix on TOTP of this song..one of the few if not the only time a remix was performed on TOTP for a NO related song. (yea damn right i got it on tape!!!!)

I've been listening to ot again and again, and all I come up with is this:

Living on appearance, it might seem The shame that were, like you've been

(The last words are almost indecipherable and "on appearance" does sound a lot like "a peanut")

Blame it on appearance It might seem A shame that we're Not you or me

That's what's in the lyrics section of this site anyway.

about 3 sites have different versions of lyrics for it!! so it seems no one knows what they are exactly...!

Well, everyone want to know what Barney's singing but any of New Order record don't contain the lyrics. But Electronic's 3nd album contains the lyrics. (You know, japaness versions serve lyrics..but it's not official) I heard even band members don't ask him what the lyrics means and Barney thanks them for it.

hahaha!!! it wouldnt surprise me if Barney deliberatly said some lyrics in an ambigious manner!!

remember this from Regret "It's the school exam and the kids have run away" at first i thought it was "its as cool as if my cares have run away" ;)

mebbe i should start a NewOrder's ambigious lyrics topic im sure you can think of loads more... :)

serious!! any idea where the interview is? i've always subscribed to the "peanuts" theory and its often been rejected - its nice to know someone agrees wiv it ;)

I just listened to the song again.. and he really IS singing that! I could hear it!! It all makes sense now..

I'd always thought it was "livin on peanuts aint my seen, cos your not worth much to me", but i think "rhymes with mean" is a deffo.

There's a bit of a money thread to Barneys lyrics - Round&round, Chemical, True Faith, World (i think there are more).

Heard him say in interviews saying that the band think he's tight so it may some sort of piss-take.

But i suppose if the Hac is draining you of so much it's probably gonna be on your mind a lot

I remember that interview. i think it was an Electronic interview with a radio station in Montreal or Toronto where people in the audience ask Marr and Sumner questions. Check the Ceremony site under Electronic and they may have a link to the interview. He definitely confirms the "living on peanuts" lyric.

Bit of a tangent from the thread but what are the lyrics in shellshock just before ".. and its never enough, never enough until your heart stops beating" ?

In the songbook it says it's "darling..." but this can't be right! It sounds to me like "It goes on and its never enough..."

Maybe i'm going deaf....

isnt the last part of VanishingPoint about IanCurtis i always thought it was something like this...

quite a serious twist to the end of an otherwise quite upbeat track i think you'll agree..
