You say all Crewe Alexandra fans are smug train spotters, well I have never done any train spotting in my life and i've been an Alex fan for 27 of my 32 years. Don't know any of my mates who have, and we are all Crewe born lads. How are we smug, cos we take pride in our team, you almost sound like a jealous Stoke Shitty fan, but seeing as you are from Scotland I will forgive you as this means your will know f**k all about football. Come on Holland!!!!

Actually, mate, I am a Stokie exiled in Scotland, and like most Stoke fans was actually quite fond (in a totally non-patronising way, of course) of the Alex before they got all jumped-up and cocky.

It was a gentle jibe, and you should learn to take this kind of banter with a pinch of salt rather than with atrocious puns along the lines of rhyming 'City' with 'Shitty'.

Anyway, Crwho do you support again??? Arf.

Yup, a head made of clay, though the whole Sjoke thing is a bit out of date now we don't have no Icelander's playing for us anymore. Typically, as a Crwho fan, you seem even more obsessed with the Rip Roaring Potters than most paid-up Stokies - I bet YOU post on the Oatcake site more than I ever have done. Still smarting from that late equaliser??? It's gotta hurt!!!

Now calm down or I'll set the N40 on yer and they'll smash up your train set.

(BTW: up here in Aberdeen pubs/clubs have started banning ALL punters - male or female - dressed in Burberry!!)

Have they stil got 5p bandits in the pubs in Crwho ?

Reg Bumswizle. Ex-Meir and still vaguely attached to area.

You read the N40 book yet? Got some nice piccies of Luton in it!

I was going to mention this, actually: I didn't know about the Stoke-Luton history until I picked up 'Naughty'.

What did you think, Al?? I had vowed never to buy another of those football hoolie/casuals books until this one came out and I felt obliged. It helps that I recognise about half the faces on the cover, and was at quite a few of the games he mentions. He even swipes a sentence from a letter I wrote to the Stoke fanzine for one of the photos from the St Andrews riot, the cheeky bastard!! Overall, I thought it was better than most, in that it wasn't quite as self-aggrandising as some of the other books (the BBC and Soul Crew ones spring to mind), and the pop-sociology approach was actually quite convincing. It's weird reading about games where you saw no trouble at all and realising that it actually kicked off big time, and others where it was chaos barely get a mention. Still, the contempt for 'shirt'/'scarf' fans really bugs me, while the stuff about the notorious Oldham game didn't really convince: I dunno if there was or wasn't a BNP presence in our following that day, but it's the one time I was genuinely ashamed to be a Potters fan: depressing stuff.

Tim - if you keep referring to the good ladyfolk of Crwho as 5p bandits, I think Lee might get upset: a Bacardi Breezer will set you back at least £1.50, even in South Cheshire's metropolitan centre!!!!

Know what you mean, but I end up picking most of them up. It's the same old thing with all of them, isn't it, although the Stoke lad's book is interesting cos he's happy to write about his personal life in the army and what-have-you. Wasn't convinced about the '100 in the seats' above Luton's firm though cos I had a season ticket in that part of the ground till '86 and I don't remember any such incident. Not saying it didn't happen, but they certainly weren't up in the seats. Someone needs a new angle somewhere down the line cos ultimately all these books are getting very 'samey'.

Funny about the Burberry thing - to think there was a time when pubs said 'No football colours'. Now it's more likely to be 'No smart clothes'! ;)

Yeah, while it's well-written there are LOADS of factual errors in 'Naughty', especially regarding years/dates so it could well be that he's simply got his seasons mixed-up. The priorities of these lads are pretty obvious as well: he gets results wrong repeatedly, and even seems to have forgotten that both Man City AND Stoke had a chance to stay up on the last game of '97-'98. All that fighting = not good for yer bonce!! And re: the Luton photos - do people really take their cameras with them to take piccies of the opposition just before they're about to steam into them???? Bizarre.....

The Burberry thing seem ridiculous to me well: almost as if wearing a bit of check 'turns' you violent. But, like Tim says, this IS Aberdeen......

There's a letter in I.D. from 1992 Helena Christensen cover issue with an Electronic interview in it. Someone writes in to slag them off for covering weird fashion that noone wears telling them how Stone Island is what everyone is wearing and how Gio Goi Chipie Chevignon et al are old hat, 11 years later...

My mother-in-law has got a Burberry handbag. She's hard as f'ing nails!!

Apparently the Pompey / Leeds match on Sturday wasn't delayed by floodlight failure at all, it was all kicking off outside. Funny how that never made the papers. Hamps Const had already turned back one train load, as the word was that they were intent on "smashing up Gunwharf Quays", and about 20 rozzers with dogs made an appearance in The Fratton End at 3:15 to eject one bloke and one woman, though whether they were wearing Burberry or not is unknown.

Hmmmmm. All part of the grand Premiership Conspiracy if you ask me. Pompey-Leeds is the kind of game where there's always going to be trouble, but it doesn't make the headlines. If it was a beleagured Nationwide prole club like Stoke, or Millwall, or Baa-diff (or Luton, or Brighton, Or Worcester City) there'd be horror stories platered everywhere about the resurrection of terrace hoolies and their 'mindless', Burberry-clad violence.

If it was Crwho or Walsmall, however, nobody'd give two shits, obviously.

We had some violence last season actually. One fat guy decided to take on Aldershot on his own, didn't get past the segregation fence before the Steward carted him off. All rather sad and pathetic really. Bit like the City !

Stoke's the only place I've had a fight at the match. Me and a mate managed to bunk in(someon tapped on the exit and asked them to open it pretending to be a copper, they did and about 100 of us dived in) for an F.A. cup match there might of been 89. On the way out we didn't have a clue which way the station was so asked around and followed about 50 or so who were going that way. We cut up a passageway and were headed of by a load of Stoke. There was a free-for-all during which me and my mate stood off watching, not having a clue who was who, as we'd not met the Liverpool fans more than two minutes since. One of the Stoke lads appeared to mistake this for cowardice on our behalf and decided to have a pop at me, presumably as I was the bigger of the two of us, I seem to recall he commented on my size as he walked onto a big right.

Football violence, not big or clever but occasionally fun.

Was that the 0-0 draw where nancy boy Graham Shaw fluffed a one-on-one with your keeper with about 20 seconds remaining? Think it was '87 - the brawling afterwards gets a write-up on the hoolie tome discussed above. Dunno if you'll get a mention, though, mate, 'cos picking on the passive ain't what being a casual is about. So the story goes, anyhows......

Oh, when Lee returns to this thread: I'm just winding you up with the Crewe bashing. We've got more fans and a bigger ground; you've got a better youth policy and a board that understands the value of continuity - apart from that, there's bugger-all to choose between the two of us. Er, apart from the fact that your higher in the league than us, of course.....

I thought it was a year we'd made the final, though I seem to recall a fluffed chance, was that on the left hand goal? Us being in a stand that ran alongside the pitch as opposed to behind a goal(don't remeber what it was called) Did we play you more than once around then? My memory aint what it was. I do seem to recall our spat was within sniffing distance of a police station.

Actually, no: not '87 - Coventry knocked us out that year; perhaps it was '86, though your lot were behind the goal then. You said initially '89, so it could have been the game in '90-'91, or maybe '91-92 (my memory's cack as well) but that was in the Coca Cola cup (or whatever it was called then), and your boys were along the side of the pitch. That was after our glorious 2-2 draw at your place, and then you beat us 2-3 at the Vic.

I really wouldn't have fancied being an away fan coming to Stoke then, especially when it was dark: a right little labyrinth around our place then, all back alleys and dark little side streets. Sorry you got clobbered, I'll be the fisrt to admit we've got some complete cocks for fans....

No worries, I got off unscathed. It's not like you had a monopoly on loons, I'm sure plenty got smacked at our place for not much more than being an away fan, same everywhere. I'm completely flummaxed as to when it was now. I was definitely not behind a goal.

tim...do you remember the belper/worcester cup game at christchurch meadow a couple of seasons ago when the lino got booted by a disgruntled fan when he turned down the 7th penalty appeal of the day. if i recall im sure you said you were there...shame i wasnt in touch as i could have shown you the bright lights of belper on a saturday night !!

Yeah - classic encounter, and the day was even more notable for Stanty's BBC appearance on Football Focus before the game when he came up with his now famous FA Cup quote. Never let it be said that footballers are limited in vocabulary, but he said "It's the FA Cup, it's magic, it's special". Not once but three times in the space of a 2 minute interview......

Have the whole game on video - we got away with it that day but were different class in the replay. Good day out, fine pub outside the ground (can't remember its name but it was the one on the main road just before you walk down to the ground entrance), mostly friendly locals (though there was a ruck just as the BBC cameras went live to the bar for the 1st round draw......), my kind of FA Cup experience.

yes it was a good day. the pub you mentioned would have been the riflemans or the nelson. i missed the draw in the bar after as i only live about 500 mts from the ground and had nipped home for my tea !! if i have no game myself or am injured ( mostly nowadays ) i try to catch the nailers when they are at home.

Martin, Crewe bashing is like all the anti English crap thats going around at the moment, people jealous of something they can never become!! As for the Naughty book, there's an intresting section on an incident at Alsager Station involving Alex and City fans, its all true as I was there, shows the author knows his stuff and makes Naughty one of the more genuine and intresting reads of its type, along with the Pompey 6:57 book and the Soul Crews book.

6:57 being the time that they're all safely tucked up in bed... gnarf.

Got stared at by a line of baseball caps when we played them at Fratton last season, but the line of police horses "encouraging" us back to the station ensured nothing developed. Why the police thought it would is still a mystery. There was supposedly some trouble in The Rifle Club beforehand, but we were walking past at around the reported time and didn't see anything. Like most of the stories, it's usually greatly embellished or complete fiction.
