What did Joy Division use as intro tapes before their shows? I've heard Gregorian chants was something.

That was the Bunnymen who used to use Gregorian chants. Joy Division used the soundtrack from Nosferatu once, when they opened with Dead Souls at the Rainbow in 1979 (and before anyone says, no this wasn't "soundtrack" off the JD setlists in March 79, as the film soundtrack wasn't available on record or tape in March 79). Besides that, they used nothing in particular, just whatever the PA was playing. The Lyceum DJ was playing the Durutti Column when they came on stage - some audience recordings have this fading out as they start with Incubation.

They also used it at Hemel Hempstead a few days before. It's called 'Brueder des Schattens - Soehne des Lichts' on my Popol Vuh Soundtracks from Werner Herzog Films cd (which I think may be a bootleg) which according to my 'O' Level German translates to something like 'Brothers of the shade - sons of the light'.

There are Gregorian chants at the begining and at the end of the bootlegs "Unknown Martyrs" and "Dead Soul", but they have been added by the bootleggers, nothing to do with the gig itself.

Didn't they once open with Sister Ray, immediately after the DJ had played it on the PA.. .

I've read that they used Kraftwerk for the opening music on several occasions (think it was in the Mick Middles book where it's mentioned)

They didn't open with it, but did play it. They were pissed off with the DJ as he knew they had intended to play it.

They played Spacelab before all the 98 gigs.

They played Spacelab before all the 98 gigs. I don't remember Joy Division touring in '98.
