Earcom. Weak.

Are the Earcom songs, Autosuggestion and From Safety to some damn place, quite possible the weakest Joy Division songs (not counting the early Warsaw ones)? Digital and Novelty always struck me as pretty bland, too. These Days seems like what Novelty should've sounded like. Thoughts?

I actually kind of like Digital for some reason.

Digital is in my top 5 JD songs - bland it most certainly is not, but I guess it's a matter of personal opinion

Have to agree about Auto-boredom and From Nowhere To Nowhere. Both crap. JD's quality control was usually quite good in terms of what made the albums, though I would have preferred Walked In Line to Candidate, though can see why it was omitted, the gathering claustrophobia of Unknown Pleasures suited Candidate better. Maybe if they'd rearranged the tracklisting so that it looked like this :

1. Disorder Wilderness Day of the Lords Insight New Dawn Fades
2. She's Lost Control Shadowplay Walked In Line Interzone I Remember Nothing

then Walked in Line would have fitted on properly.

Yer talking out yer arse about Digital though, it was one of their better moments. Have you ever heard a panic attack portrayed better than this in a piece of music ? The way it draws you in and squeezes you just heightens the intensity. It's such a pity that they had to reduce the song to a pedestrian stomp on the 2002 gigs, they completely stripped it of all its terrible intensity.

I think Disorder makes for a better panic attack. Oh, how I wish it was on video somewhere.

And anyway, Colony, Passover, and The Sound of Music are a few of their later songs that aren't terribly hot to my ears.

"cough splutter choke" autosuggestion and from safety to where WEAK??? yer outa yer mind poope those 2 tracks alone show early signs of the sound that jd was developing. i remember buying earcom at the time and those 2 tracks stood out a mile from the rest of the stuff on it,dont forget that at the time of its release the general teen population in the uk was gearing up for its new romantic era. thats how far ahead thew was even then

Aye, they were better than Basczax and Thursdays, but were nowhere near good enough to get on Unknown Pleasures. Autosuggestion could have made it at a pinch, but From Safety To Where is not up there with their best efforts. IMHO.

Autosuggestion and From Safety aren't favorites, but I wouldn't say they're the weakest songs. Colony's never really done it for me, neither has Ice Age (sounded a bit too much like some "heavy metal" track from the early Eighties or something). Probably the weakest song of JD's is Candidate, never liked this one and thought it was a bit of a whimper following Days of the Lords on UP.

I agree they should've left Candidate off UP. Shoulda stuck in Transmission instead!
