At the final JD show, there's some odd vocal effect during the last verse of A Means to an End that sounds like dual vocals, high and low. Would that be caused by the Varispeed thingus acting up?

Probably. The same effect appears occasionally on different recordings of other shows as well. It could be that Terry Mason moved the wrong slider on the mixer though, as was often the case !
Ok at the risk of sounding more ignorant than normal (I wonder if anyone would notice) what exactly is: Varispeed thingus
Varispeed is a control in which to change tape speed and pitch. By slowing down a tape based device, you get a lower pitch and speeding up gives you a higher pitch. I'm not entirely certain what gear they may have been using at the time but it could have possibly been a tape echo device or even a pitch shifter. Not having the track to listen to only leaves me with speculation. I think some of the earliest dedicated pitch shifting devices have been around since the the mid 70's. I could be wrong though... :)
