NOOL End of Year Poll

Well, as promised several weeks ago, here it is. Hopefully as many people as possible will vote (otherwise it will just be me, and I don't think that would be very representative!). You can vote in as many categories as you like, one vote in each except the Song of the Year category in which you can vote for up to three.

Send your votes by email to alken.brookes@whsmithnet.co.uk using "NOOL Poll" as the subject, otherwise I won't see it through the haze of Spam! Let me have your votes by 26 December 2003 - you've got plenty of time to think!

The categories are:

1. Song of the Year

Nicked straight from John Peel's Festive 50. Vote for songs that have been released, played live or featured in a radio session during 2003.

2. Album of the Year

This category includes all formats (CD, cassette, LP, wax cylinder, etc) in case anyone was unsure.

3. Re-issue of the Year

Vote for your favourite compilation, box-set or a re-issue of that classic album you love so much (probably on LTM!), now with extra tracks and a tacky badge.

4. Live Act of the Year

Vote for your mates' NO/JD tribute band, Kylie, or some band you stumbled across whilst drunk in some bar. (Sorry Julio, Joy Division didn't play live this year).

5. Heroes - Favourite Person of the Year

Could be a great world statesman, the bass player in your favourite band, a ponytailed footballer, whatever. You can even vote for yourself!

6. Villains - Least Favourite Person of the Year

Same as above, but in reverse.

7. Event of the Year

What do you think has been the most important thing to happen in 2003? Son of Desert Storm? The Peter Saville Show?

And finally...

8. All-time favourite song

Just for interest, what is the favourite song of the NOOL community? Have your say now. (Presumably it may have been released between 1978 and 2003!).

1. song of the year: 'hey ya' by outkast. one of the coolest songs ever.

2. album of the year: the strokes--room on fire. why haven't you given it a listen yet, tim???

3. re-issue/box-set of the year: well, the only re-issue or box-set that i bought this year that was actually released this year was retro...but i also purchased some elvis costello re-issues and the echo and the bunnymen crystal days box-set, which are all excellent.

4. live act of the year: sad, sad me. this is the first year in godknowshowlong that i didn't see any live shows (unless you count lounging outside de la soul with shug, don, wen, et al.)!

5. favourite person of the year: stephen colbert from 'the daily show with jon stewart.' just looking at him makes me laugh. and i mean that as a compliment.

6. least favourite person of the year: that damned verizon wireless 'can you hear me now' a-hole (just squeezing out the dell interns for top place). note to non-americans: feel lucky, very lucky, that you don't know what i'm talking about here.

7. event of the year: celine dion starting a 2-year run at caesar's palace. forget operation desert thingy...this is what brought shame to america in 2003!

This is a three-way tie between Ric Santorum, Hilary Clinton, and one of my perennial most hated persons Ariel Sharon.

This is a tie between the Cubs' fan snatching the ball from the stand from a Cub player trying to catch a ball on the field, and the decision in the MA Supreme Court will hopefully start a domino effect throughout the states with gay marriage

8. All-time favourite song

This is a tie between "Under the Bridge" and "Vanishing Point"

It may be a safe target, but those of us who work less than 100 yards from Blair's Ivory Tower are a bit less than safe at the moment. Nothing to do with being trendy or fashionable, more to do with trying to get through each day without my ass getting blown up by an Arab with a deathwish.

I'm sure that Arab with a deathwish will be very careful that no civilians in your area are harmed.

OK, here goes:

1. Song of the year: You think I ain't worth a dollar, but I feel like a millionaire - Queens of the Stone Age. The opening track off Songs for the Deaf - quiet start, followed by a sudden, very very loud explosion of noise and screaming - absolutely brilliant, kick-arse rock out.
2. Album of the year: toss-up between Youth and young manhood by Kings of Leon, Room on fire by The Strokes and Take them on on your own by BRMC - fantastic, raw tunes. Forget the hype, listen to the songs.
3. Re-issue of the year: haven't bought any official re-issues, but two old albums I rediscovered were Dare by The Human League and The hurting by Tears for Fears.
4. Live act of the year: the Big Day Out earlier this year - The Music, PJ Harvey, QOTSA, Janes Addiction and the highlight - Kraftwerk.
5. Heroes: naah, they all bleed red
6. Villains: all those aggressive idiots on the road who think they're immortal
7. Event of the year: finally cutting down on my drinking
8. All time favourite song: this will change every day as there are too many to choose from, but for today it's Dig by Mudvayne. And on a last note I want to agree with Spotnick on the 2 best songs in Community not making it to the end: C Bentley's Temptation and Almanso's Ceremony - once those 2 were kicked out I lost a lot of enthusiasm for the whole thing (but I'll still vote in the finals to be fair).

1. Song of the Year

Are You An Entertainer? by Jon Langford and The Sadies; at first listen, I thought this song was a self-pitying look at life on the road as a musician, but it's charm quickly became readily available after a couple of more listens. Jon's Welsh voice is wonderful(I love the way he sings "friends"), and the Sadies backing vocals on the chorus lines of "Get the money.......don't leave anything behind......just pieces of your heart.........and fragments of your mind....". The "Missing all of my friends I'll never meet again" line strikes a chord with me as well.

Followed closely by Hey Ya by Outkast and The Back Of Your Hand by Dwight Yoakam

2. Album of the Year

Probably Forget Yourself by The Church, though it's not out here yet (fooking record companies)

3. Re-issue of the Year

Very, very close competition in this one: there are the two Television albums, the No Thanks! punk box set, the New Order DVD's being available stateside, or the Rhino versions of Elvis Costello's early albums but my choice would be Sterolab's ABC Music, a collection of their BBC sessions.

4. Live Act of the Year

Sally Timms, I suppose, can't recall a more charming show I've ever seen.

5. Heroes - Favourite Person of the Year

Hillary, current object of affection.

6. Villains - Least Favourite Person of the Year

Ashcroft.

7. Event of the Year

Personally, it was the Seattle get together in July, but world-wise, Iraq.

I hate to interrupt an important discussion of song of the year with politics, and I don't expect to influence anyone's world view with a post on New Order Online, but...for your consideration...

I'd likely vote for Charles Taylor (no, not my father..the other one.) for villain of the year. And John Ashcroft? May I nominate Castro as an alternative if civil rights are your personal crusade?
