i've just gone through nearly 200 newOrder songs and versions and assessed the BeatsPerMinute (BPM). I found a program for iTunes (FREE) that used the TAP TEMPO method and automatically recorded the bpm's into iTunes. Really cool to organize my newOrder playlist from slowest to fastest or the other way around. guess which newOrder song is the fastest excluding live material?

A live version of denial is surely the winner, must be way over 150BPM. You ever come accross a program called "ableton live"? It's a loop sequencer much like Acid, except it rules, you can fill it full of loops abd it will assume all of them to be perfect loops and stretch them to the correct BPM. Works a treat AND you can record MIDI or audio into it LIVE and have it looped right back at you perfectly.You can even re-tune the loops to the key of the tune independently of time/speed. Best realtime timetretch I ever encountered. Must try a NO megamix with it sometime.

Interesting to note, mate of mine did a DJ'ing course recently and they reckon you should never attempt to mix tunes that are more than 8 beats apart!

I'd guess it's a fair bit slower. 140 is quite uptempo for a house or techno track. 170+ is generally only found on Drum and bass, Jungle, mad hardcore and ragga, stuff like that.

Not that this is on topic, but... my rule of thumb when spinning is that if I have to pitch the track more than +4%, then I don't mix them. And rarely do I go go more than -2% - it just "sounds" too slow. Exceptions do apply.

i agree with TLV, i won't mix tracks that are more than 4bpms apart. any pitch adjustment over +/- 3 makes the songs sound funny. some exceptions apply but NOT if there is a vocal involved or if it's a well known track.
Err, I wasn't listening to Closer for clues, that's just what I was playing while I was reading the thread, though I would've guessed EGG over AOC at any rate.

the whole BPM project has been very enlightening to me. it's interesting to see the songs listed in order of tempo. our perceptions are sometimes very different to the reality of the situation. I'd love to be able to print out the info from iTunes and post all the bpm's here but i don't know how to export the info in a format that is compatible.

Can't speak for the rest, but the intro is pure, unadulterated drum'n'bass for sure .
i would have thought cries & whispers and that awful hard trance mix of blue monday :barf: that makes your nose bleed (off the BM mixes cd)are amongst the highest
i didn't bpm all the mixes but if it's trance you can assume the BPM's will be between 135 and 145 bpm.

But, back in the days (mid-90's), when trance was really trance, the BPMs were usually around 120-130 (check out Pitch Black's Repile Room for good, modern trance track). These days, if a track is 135-145 bpm it's probably closer to hard-house, progressive trance, or Euro-dance... But then again, it doesn't matter as long as the track is good, right? :)

i totally disagree with you TLV.
House music "back in the day" was 120-126...Trance didn't really come into it's own genre until 93 or so. The faster stuff released in the early 90's was classified as RAVE or Breakbeat and was a precurser to today's Jungle/Drum & Bass.
What specific tracks do you classify as "Trance" from back in the day that are 120-130 bpm? Perhaps it's a matter of semantics....

Ok, i reread your post and you did say MID 90's...i assume you're refering to Perfecto and Perfecto Flouro / Dragonfly type stuff..i assure you NONE of this was slower than 130 and i would bet money it was almost always 135+. Progressive house (Spooky, Underworld, Leftfield, Stress Label etc.) was 126 beats per minute almost without exception. Maybe 125 or 127 but when Progressive started (92/93) it all stayed at that tempo. It started to get faster the latter half of the decade and morphed/split into different subgenre's...i still hold my belief that TRANCE has never been slower than 130bpms

I figured that I would have to provide examples... Keep in mind that the music evolution and naming-scheme differs somewhat between Europe, the US, and other parts of the world.
True, (classic) house is generally in the 120's. Trance though, at least in Europe, started to emerge in the beginning of the 90's (maybe very late 80's). One of my favorite tracks being The Overlord's Sundown (low-120 bpm I believe) from 1991. Though most names elude my memory at the moment since most of my music is stuck on another continent, I would suggest that you check out the early volumes of Techno Tracks if you haven't already. Many track there are of course techno, but some trance tracks can be found as well.
I admit though that the trance(techno) genre rapidly ventured up in the 130+ range, and today, some trance, e.g. Paul van Dyk, is around 140 bpm.
BTW: I'm not going to argue with you regarding jungle & d'n'b since it's not my kind of music. However, I was under the impression that jungle emerged when people realized that they could really, really pitch up hip-hop beats...
