i've just gone through nearly 200 newOrder songs and versions and assessed the BeatsPerMinute (BPM). I found a program for iTunes (FREE) that used the TAP TEMPO method and automatically recorded the bpm's into iTunes. Really cool to organize my newOrder playlist from slowest to fastest or the other way around. guess which newOrder song is the fastest excluding live material?

(disclaimer...some times vary, for example, the versions of Temptation i have all time from 127-129 from 7" to Saturday Live to Temptation 98 etc..)

the video version is the fastest version i have at 134 with the Substance/7"/12" versions being 131. so no...the fastest song clocks an incredible 172 BPM and was recorded before 1987.

A live version of denial is surely the winner, must be way over 150BPM. You ever come accross a program called "ableton live"? It's a loop sequencer much like Acid, except it rules, you can fill it full of loops abd it will assume all of them to be perfect loops and stretch them to the correct BPM. Works a treat AND you can record MIDI or audio into it LIVE and have it looped right back at you perfectly.You can even re-tune the loops to the key of the tune independently of time/speed. Best realtime timetretch I ever encountered. Must try a NO megamix with it sometime.

Interesting to note, mate of mine did a DJ'ing course recently and they reckon you should never attempt to mix tunes that are more than 8 beats apart!

I'd guess it's a fair bit slower. 140 is quite uptempo for a house or techno track. 170+ is generally only found on Drum and bass, Jungle, mad hardcore and ragga, stuff like that.

Not that this is on topic, but... my rule of thumb when spinning is that if I have to pitch the track more than +4%, then I don't mix them. And rarely do I go go more than -2% - it just "sounds" too slow. Exceptions do apply.
