the backing vocals on Sub-culture 12" mix are horrible. be thankful neworder haven't hired a horn section. although i do think an orchestra would be a nice addition for an update of All Day Long...at least a string section. i really enjoy the female vocals on Someone Like You. i don't think they need to use pre-recorded female vocals in concert though. did they use tapes or actual singers on the UK dates? i saw the singer on jools holland (thanks seb and nic for the video updates!).

The same singer - Dawn Zee? - was present on all the UK dates too.
I don't have anything against female backing vocals per se.
But I don't like the way NO use them, most of the time...

Nothing wrong with a few horns here and there...ask ACR.
Backing singers - you can take 'em or leave'em, as long as they don't all start wobbling all over the place or , worse, try to sound like that woman in the old Bodyform advert....!
The reason I asked is because it is a relatively recent development, and I think they are trying to be too trendy and commercial. It's out of character. Songs like Crystal and World would be much better without them. They didn't need them before, and their songs are very strong even now without them.
Yes..you're right..It's out of character for NO to use female back-up singer, in my opinion, or in my own world perhaps.. I don't mind Gillian's singing..but not when it's all 'soulful' and 'gospel like' etc...on a NO song!!! ( I must admit I quite like the back-up singing in Primal Scream's Come Together )
