New Order-alternative or not ?

So, are in your opinion New Order in any way "alternative" ? And how and why and compared to what.

This ain't gonna work. Alternative to what, and why ? Who cares ? Are we talking musical genres here ?

New Order are an alternative to my bothering to work today. They are an alternative to my listening to other music some days. They are an alternative to the radio.

At the end of the day, who gives a fook ? I wish people would stop trying to neatly package the band into various genres or styles, it is a very false approach, as the band's output transcends several different styles and types of music, forming something that is unique and means something different to each listener.

I would assume it meant alternative to the majority of the popular taste, which is usually rubbish. We've got our version of Pop Idol now as well.

well they dont play the press game for a start. or didnt. no names on sleeves. no singles from albums

They aren't as alternative as they used to be. At the end of the day, they write their own songs and aren't told what to do by the record companies unlike most of the music in the charts these days. That is alternative to the norm.

i can see three "distinct" new order sounds or musical styles.but wouldnt neccessary pigeon hole them as "alternative". 1, rocky-esque-earlier stuff 2, electronica - blue monday,round & round etc,etc 3, indie,stylee on technique

thats what i think anyway! you cannot basically put any of new orders music into one musical genre or call them alternative. they are who they are,they play how they want,when they want etc. but they seem to want to keep up with the times. this is why they chose all the latest/top remixers to remix their tracks. like oakenfold & and osbourne on true faith 94 etc. thats what i seem to think,who knows maybe we will see another different "style" on the next album............ IF WE EVER BLOODY GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compared to the rest of the stuff released in the states, I certainly think they are, at least at this point in time.

in the interests of science, or somesuch notion; I braved the newly artic streets of Manchester to provide an answer.In HMV, New Order could be found alongside the likes of the black eyed peas, the clash and other fanciful beat combos ( well mainly those begining with N really, but you get the idea ) .Outside on market street a blind busker who may have been miming, offered a true alternative and did so; I might add with a degree of panache totally at odds with his frostbite. i voted alt because to me they are an alternative to the shit that gets played on the radio here...other than that, they are the real true brilliant thing and radio needs to realize that

An "alternative" to what 98% of the people I know listen to, but there is no distinction to me....New Order is New Order. End of fucking story.

I'd say they're alternative, yes. They're a bit different from most other music.

1980 - 1983 Yes

1984 - 1988 Perhaps

1989 onwards - NO WAY

1984 - 1986 ...Still yes, thou starting to want more

1987-90 ...hardly a normal pop band in any sense anyway

1990s onwards ... largely irrelevant to totally irrelevant

2001-02 ... a curiousity outside of reality

looking back on the 80s... yes, definite alternative
