This has probably been discussed here before, and its probably common kNOwledge that I just never caught on to, but what's the meaning of the title 586? I realize that a lot of the NO titles are kinda arbitrary, but I read in an old issue of Trouser Press that there's a clue to the meaning of 586 in the track Ecstasy. Can anyone help?

"Does the numbers 5-8-6 have any meaning? It's to do with the structure of the song Ecstacy. Five bars followed by eight bars followed by six bars."

Anyway I don't understand, may be because I never composed anything. ![]()

sorry, but i don´t agree. Ecstacy is another classic 4/4 structure. might be a lot syncopated due to Steve´s drums. but still a 4/4 beat with 4/8/12/16 bars. except maybe on the "chorus" where you can find a 7/15 structure, but certainly not a 6 and definetely not a 5!!! ![]()

I should know since I've recorded this track... but I don't. And I haven't analyzed the track. But couldn't it be that the chord changes follows (in quarter-note beats) 20-32-24 beats (5-8-6 bars)?
At any rate, there may be a difference to what Hooky has said and what the truth is... :D

Back in the days when I didn't know any better, I took teenage fanbase muppetry a bit too far when I wrote to Hooky to ask him where in Ecstacy the 586 explanation was.
Back came the enigmatic reply "The answer is in the New Order, but none of the New mind".
I then compounded the error by writing back to ask exactly what he meant by that.
Back came "I MEAN THE ORDER, YOU DUMMY!!!!"
besides, what does Ecstacy has to do with anything? i mean, wasn´t 586 written before Ecstacy? (video586/peel)... ![]()

It's the route number of a Greater Manchester bus that runs past a band members house as it meanders via Didsbury, chorlton, etc into 'town '( Manchester ) , the only mystery for locals is if it will 'turn up' (arrive ) on time. 'phone GM buses for timetable enquiries. 'tis a pretty route and good value for savvy travellers. Stalkers are usually weeded out so stay at home if your that way inclined

'tis true enough, I myself once waited 24 hours for the 586 in vain , upon seeing my plight a shrub doctor; whom later revealed himself to be in the gainful employ of a member of a local top forty beat combo, pointed out that the 511 made the same journey but did'nt stop at Ardwick. As I thanked him for his time two 586' and a 511 went past. I hailed a cab and prayed for a tank![]()
