Taras Shevchenko Street!

Was in NYC last week ans while roaming around Greenwich Village looking for CBGBs I stumbled across the above named street from which the said video was (presumably) named. I'm guessing the venue itself has closed/changed name and purpose 'cos I couldn't see it. Also bored the good lady senseless by climbing up the pole and insisting on having my photo taken by said street sign. It was, depressingly enough, probably the highlight of the trip!!

ukranian national home is still there, well at least as soon as last summer when i last walked by it, it is hard to miss its very small

Is it across the street from McSorley's (oldest bar in NYCity)? I know I saw the street sign and wondered if that was the building last time I was there. Didn't drag the wife, parents and 3 sisters to investigate further though.

You know he was a poet? He cropped up in a book I was reading the day, apparently he was instrumental in building a Ukrainian national culture, so the book said.

A web search turns up some of his poems. They all seem to be about Cossacks and Tsars and stuff. Can't say it does much for me. I prefer 'up down turn around' myself.

What exactly does (did?) the Ukranian Home do, exactly? I've always wondered if it was an actual refuge for Ukranians coming into NYC or just a unusually-named place for musical gigs like New Order (a club, perhaps). Somebody may have covered this already, but I just can't remember, and it's always been in the back of my mind anytime I watch the video.

If you search for any "Taras Shev" threads, there's one where I posted a question about him, and someone (can't remember who) posted a link to a website talking about TS and had a few of his poems. Seemed alright as far as I was concerned, probably didn't inspire NO much though

i dont think they usually do or did gigs its like a ukranian community center in brooklyn they have the polish national home they put on gigs under the name " warsaw" frank black played there last year

its still there, i walked by it last week. its on 2nd avenue close to st. marks place where i recently picked up that refractured box set. there are great record stores all over that area. the venue itself didnt ever put on shows. New Order played there because at the time there was a lot of bad blood between different NYC clubs such as peppermint lounge, mudd club etc.. so New Order decided to put on their own show and I forget the name of the woman that booked it but she also booked Joy Division's tour of the US.

Ouch!! Was sensibly sober this time, though since my trip to the Big Apple I've decided that Long Island Iced Teas are THE WAY OF THE FUTURE!!

i dont think they usually do or did gigs its like a ukranian community center in brooklyn they have the polish national home they put on gigs under the name " warsaw" frank black played there last year When I was younger, I went to a Ukranian community center for a few Ukranian festivals, since my mother is Ukranian, but the building itself - the one in Philly at least - was just used mostly for similar events and Ukranian school.
