Just a question for the ones who are familiar with postmodernism.... actually I got a school project to do on postmodernism and music and it would be wonderful if I can get some opinions / comments from fans of my favorite band... Appreciated thanks!
Is New Order Music Postmodern?

Is Krazy Hot Sauce crazy and hot? I don't know the answer to your question (if there is one). Do New Order have to be post-anything? Perhaps they're pre-modern. Or pre-post-modern.
Not a fan of pigeonholes, sorry. Especially ones I don't understand. Perhaps Paul Morley could help?
I agree. I've never understood what this means anyway. For all the wankers out there like Paul Morley - start speaking/writing 'sense'. The words they use are arty-farty, post-modern, neo-nazi shite. It don't mean anything.
Actually, I quite like Paul Morley, but it takes me three hours to understand what he is on about in his 'essays', when one sentence would suffice. ![]()
NO are rockin' bastards. Does not matter what they wear, look like, haircut, beer gut, man tits, music they play, instruments they use, who does what solo or even who they are. Just 4 people playing music.

he does! and rides a chopper! have you seen him??? delivers the letters in the wrong order too:D
(Not) in answer to your question, most people on this forum aren't exactly learned enough in literary theory to know what postmodernism is (as if the above posts didn't clue you in).

Just read Frederic Jameson's works on Postmodernism; that should allow you to waste time and get more confused. ![]()

As I am posting below your Post-Traditionalist ( for a pope, that is ) remark, does that make me learned enough, cos a bloke down the pub sez it depends on your definition of modern ... however in view of the amount of cds/dvds etc bein shared between NOOLers world wide, he feels that New Order are mainly Post-Restante ![]()

Tsk. Kids, today. No respect. ;)
Is New Order Music Postmodern?
Possibly. You could argue that the lyrics Barney writes are modernist, whereas Ian had some semblance of post-modernism to his style. Difficult to separate the music from the lyrics in this context.
I'd definitely agree that the sleeve designs are post-modernist though.

I think this a sensible question and deserves a little more respect and encouragement. Posting to say you don't know or understand the post seems a bit of a waste of time really. The kid's just trying to get his homework done.
Postmodernism cuts up old stuff and recycles it to make something new (Hooky's been doing this with his bass riffs for years
}, so, yes, I think NO have been at the cutting edge of this type of experimentation; certainly since Video 586, and Blue Monday. In particular I think you could argue that pretty much any of the remixes are PM.
Good luck young sir, nice to see they're doing something cool at school nowadays.
The point is, does it matter? You can have as many lectures on modernism/post-modernism as you like, but in relation to what NO do, does it actually matter?
Once you start saying, oh yes, such and such a group is such and such, you stop enjoying the music for its own sake. You also take away the scope (in your own mind) for the group to move out of that pigeonhole and into something else. Once you have a label to attach it becomes very easy to start to make assumptions about the artist's future conduct/art and to forget to actually listen. I think it would be rather sad for that to happen with New Order.
By the way, I think it is great that you get to discuss this stuff at school these days (I'm jealous) but just remember that NO don't make their music solely to be theorised over: it's there to move us and to make us fucking well dance too.
New Order is New Order...they have there own style![]()
allthough my teacher said they where new wave.. i was ready to strangle him lol![]()
I always think of "postmodern" more in terms of paintings which are really blank canvases or Yoko Ono scream fests recorded on CD (gee, thanks for encouraging her, John L.
), so by that standard...no ![]()
'Postmodernism' is just a shorthand that is convenient for discussing art/culture. It is concerned with 'technique', but I don't think it's a pigeon hole; like 'rock', or 'pop', or 'electro'. Maybe it's better to say NO have been influenced by, or have used techniques that could be seen as Postmodern; rather than saying are or aren't Postmodern.
