Substance Abuse

Anyone come across a remix album with the above name. Just discovered a version of the Perfect Kiss (hot trax mix) which is class and is supposed to be on an album called Substance abuse?

How do ya get hold of a copy, I came across the PK tarck by chance, if you get me drift!

They are now. "Back in the day" they had some great remixes, but never of NO tunes. For some reason the original 12" versions of NO's songs were always better than what Razormaid came up with.

...I searched around in my archive (or empire, somebody wrote), and I realized, that the 'Record Mirror' version of 'Subculture' is nothing else, than a faded-out version of the 'Razormaid Sarm West Mix' on 'Substance Abused'...

The two that founded Razormaid, and were its primary remixers, were Joseph Watt and Art Maharg. Art is now deceased, but as everyone knows, Joseph has continued w/ Razormaid.

Nope. The RM version is a fade-out of the first (1.0) Razormaid! remix. I have personally done a parallel comparison of the two tracks. No difference, besides the fade-out.

That's right - John Robie did the single version and twelve inch mixes which most people loathe, but I actually rather like.

Razormaid isn't even that complicated - just timestretched and edited versions of what is already widely available. I've never quite worked out who Razormaid's market is for these edits - it's not like contemporary or even indie DJ's are going to be buying these up in their thousands, are they? Surely the regular single and 12" versions of New Order's tunes are more than enough for any of the (very few these days) DJs that play New Order in the clubs. Have you ever heard 'Ecstasy', or 'Mr Disco' played in a club, let alone the Razormaid version?

Surely the only market is us fans - which would explain why we were allowed to buy the 'In Hindsight' compilations recently.

Well, the remixes (or edits it you want) from companies like Razormaid and Hot Tracks are made for the DJ market, with mixable intros, breaks, and outros. They are also EQd for the dancefloor. In addition, a DJ finds it very convenient to get DJ friendly tracks in one package so that he/she doesn't have to go through all the bins in the record stores...

Yeah, I understand that, but my point was about if there are any DJs who actually give anything but Blue Monday and Temptation spins in clubs these days? I can't see much demand for, say, 'Everything's Gone Green'. Any DJs buying these Razormaid versions would have to be a niche kind of thing, as I'd imagine most DJs are on the whole interested in new contemporary material that's around now (most of which is tailored towards being "mixable" anyway).

I think the worst Razormaid mix by a long way has the be their spliced-up 'Round & Round', which stops and starts almost at random - far more DJ-friendly to just play the 'Technique' version!

Well, I never said that R-maid hasn't turned into a let's-squeeze-the-last-dime-out-of-our-catalogue company...

Still, they are in business so there must be some demand.
