it's kind of hard not to discuss ian curtis and joy division and especially all the shit ian went trough because of things like "touching from a distance" and the book included with "heart and soul" boxset. in a way, people are being invited to keep the ian curtis legend alive. fine by me, ian was a genius, but the music of joy division as a whole is what drew me to joy division, not just ian's lyrics. i wonder if thats why on most new order albums, the credits goes to "new order" and not sumner, gilbert, hook, morris etc... maybe they were trying to not pigeonhole themselves with having one members private life overshadow the whole group and most importantly the music?

Very true indeed. I was railing more at the martyrdom joke that is too often waved around when people start discussing IC. Nobody made him fuck up but himself. Nobody made him sniff dry-cleaning fluid to trigger his epilepsy.

Have you asked a doctor or medical person if that's possible? I can see it have some very altering mental effects and being very bad for you, as would huffing any solvent, but I'd be interested in what an epilepsy specialist (though certainly not Ian's useless ones) would say on the subject.
Yes I have actually. One of the side effects of ingesting the chemicals used in dry cleaning fluid, tetrachloroethylene, is an artificial raising of the blood temperature that can lead to seizure. There was also mention in Touching From A Distance about nursing homes - instruments may be steralised in Ethylene Oxide, a known seizure-causer. This would also go some way to explaining why the scans could find no brain lesions that would be a giveaway sign of epileptic activity. It has never been beyond the realms of possibility that his fascination with epilepsy led him to experiment with drugs that would enhance the chances of a seizure. Of course once the tripswitch had been set, it was easy to keep overloading the circuits.

There aren't many things better than listening to JD's Disorder or Ceremony and the tingle and uplpift one gets from it. Many people have claimed Ian was a genuis - no, he had a gift. And the constant crap and grasp of analysing, picking and pocking at Ian's "gift" only pushes it further from him - not us.
By all means p1ss on that gift.
