1981 Rehearsals

Can anyone enlighten us further as to what's contained within the 1981 rehearsal tapes that are being talked about in the forum?

A 20-odd minute work through of Hurt, with them trying different things. There is also stuff from 83 and 84 sort of time, probably from when they were writing Low-Life. Nothing instantly recognisable, but you can hear elements of This Time Of Night, some sound effects that ended up on TPK and a guitary (if that is a real word) bit that sounds to me like it probably went on to become Love Vigilantes.

The "83" one is likely what went on to be Ecstasy, at least that's what it sounds like. Apparently the label didn't have a specific date, but it sounds more PC&Lish than Low-lifish

Possibly. Will have to have another listen tonight. The 84 one contains the birth of Paradise as well as This Time of Night, in the same riff !

Ah, first time I noticed Paradise in there! What do you make of the last one in that set, the one with the samples used in the Stockholm Monsters' "Kan Kill" as well as the end of TPK? Don't think that resulted in anything they ended up using...

REHERSAL 13) 2/9/84 has surfaced 17) THE LOST ONE (Jamming version of Unknown Idea then became "PARADISE") about 20 Mins has surfaced

Hmmm...another thing to think about, the "84" portion is 20:50 and it starts off with the Paradise-ish intro...I had thought matched 13) but it might also be a better fit for 17)...or the descriptions may not have been exact.

There's some unidentified stuff (two different things) after the two Hurt takes (about 22:00 in) that I'm thinking might have been done later...what would that line up with?

The three or four minutes immediately after Hurt could have been straight from a Joy Division rehearsal - very JD-riff type. OBviously they are New Order, but the sound is very JD.

The beginnings of Ultraviolence are immediately after that JD-riff (listening to the CD right now, hence the updates), the sound from one of the sequencers has the Ultraviolence pattern (at a different speed and timimng but same notes)

The 84 rehearsal is :

* origins of Paradise (bass riff) * This Time of Night drum machine and bass sequencer * origins of Love Vigilantes (different bassline, but same drum and some guitar) * fairly advanced sequencer and synth song that never made it, doesn't really tie in with anything

The 83 rehearsal begins with

* basic structure of Ecstacy, but with different bass synth and sequencer stuff - also part of the 586 sequencer riff. Also parts of Too Late in there - it could be that Ecstacy evolved out of Too Late.

Especially with the prominence in the guitar...I also hear a bit of SXXV in there too. I really like this one, too bad it never got developed further, but I reckon the band were getting away from that sort of sound.

I don't hear much in the way of 586 or Too Late in this one, the bass riff near the end veers towards Mesh/Sister Ray territory, suggesting this is a (well-played) jam rather than a proper take (not that was really in doubt).

It's more likely to me this was a 1982 recording than a 1983 one, based on the drum synthesis and the overall "feel" of the instrumentation. Opinions?

Its the same notes as parts of 586 and Too Late but played with a different time signature and structure.

Defnitely agree it feels 82 rather than 83.

I'd love to add to this because it sounds quite intersting but my copy of this seems to have been intercepted by a NOOL hating postman somewheres!!
